TESTING GROUND: HARTLEPOOL SONIC INSTITUTE FINAL WORK
HARTLEPOOL SONIC INSTITUTE The proposal is to create an institute on the site of the former Steetley Magnesite Works that would manipulate sound in a precise way. The intervention consists of two main elements: the pier and the wall. The pier is the main recording and transmission hub of the institute, constantly recording the sound of the sea and the sky and transmitting the sound all over the world. The wall is a protective element against the noise coming from the town, isolating the site sonically and playing upon its already alien landscape. The wall is inhabited by a hotel that is surrounded by white noise generators, used to nullify the sound coming from the sea and creating a space where the sea is seen but never heard. The public access to the wall is via a train platform. From there visitors can go to the auditoria to listen to a performance taking place 100 meters away-the sound is reflected via a large mirror over the site to the auditoria, with the performers obscured by a wall and never visible. If the public chooses to walk till the end of the wall they can enter the listening pods where the sound focused by the large dishes of the pier is played back 24/7.

Soundwaves hitting the parabolic dish are reflected towards a single focal point (F). Due to the high directional sensitivity and size of the dishes distant sounds can be recorded without sacrificing sound fidelity.
Soundwaves projected from point F are reflected off the dish in a parallel direction, allowing sound to be carried over a large distance.

First designed piece using the parabolic reflector, located on the pier, includes a mic and a platform for people to go up to the mic at the focal point of the parabola.

THE TOWER EXPLODED VIEW Large parabolic dish records the sound of the sky while the tower transmits the sounds recorded at different points on site to a global audience. A place for sitting or lying down is located at the point where all the soundwaves are focused. The person at that point would only see and hear the sky.
THE EAR EXPLODED VIEW Large parabolic dish at the end of the pier facing the sea. Focuses sound waves coming from the sea to a single point and records them. Access to the focal point via lift from the pier. Person standing at focal point would have no reference to the coast and would be overwhelmed by the sea and the clarity of sound.

CAN RICART ART FACTORY
The intervention turns the site of the former Can Ricart factory into a massive scale art production scheme. The art is produced in studios that are located in pods scattered all around the site. The artwork that is made on site either gets exhibited or gets thrown away and ends up in a discarded art dumping ground located on site. The discarded art can then be taken away by the visitors of Can Ricart and sold on as souvenirs or kept to themselves. The built intervention of the site is comprised of almost identical pods placed along a scaled down version of the Barcelona city grid which are used by the resident artists in a mass scale production of art and a walkway over the site that is used by the general public who are invited to look upon the creative process at every step of its way. The design is informed by information gathered from historical maps of the area around Can Ricart as well as the Barcelona city grid. The mapping exercise undertaken to achieve the final composition of the architectural elements involved overlaying the different information gathered from the historical maps in order to get composite images which over time informed the layout of the site interventions. The 1877 map of the routes around the fields that used to surround the Can Ricart factory inspired the shape of the walkway above the site while the grid, scaled down to the size of the site, became the model for the layout and form of the pods that comprise the artists‘ studios.

FINAL WORK 31
Due to the nature of the intervention 2 different micro scale drawings are required. The first detail is an axonometric section through the walkway. The second one is a section through the artists’ studio pod, in a place where it interacts with the existing built fabric. As this is prevalent throughout the site it is important to show this particular detail. These details were chosen as they show the construction of the most prevalent interventions on site and are the most relevant to the whole architectural concept.

The walkway:
Two steel beams supported on a steel frame with diagonal bracing. The frame transports the load into the ground with the steel beams spanning the lengths between the frames. The decking is bridged inbetween the beams and decorative panelling covers the bottom of the walkway. As the decking differs in width in some cases more than two beams are required.

HIGHBRIDGE QUARTER: BIGG MARKET PROPOSAL
Inhabited proposal Our initial design response to the old gents’ toilet had to do with intricacy of its detail. Trying to find the essence of its character, it provoked in us a feeling of something forbidden underground. We were fascinated by the detail of the railing surrounding the toilet and were seeking to damage it as little as possible. Imagining this peculiar space inhabited only underground didn’t seem enough to us. First, the size of it is quite restrictive as any expansion sideways seems not to be economically viable. Also, with a floor area of roughly 60 m2 with the speculated possible rent and maintenance costs may cancel out with the probable profit gained. What captured out attention and imagination was the rusty industrial structure of the conic roof. This combined with our previous observations developed into the idea of ‘opening up’ the whole space and taking it out of the ground. We imagined that the structure holding the panels would be strong enough to be detached from the walls and tilted sideways either sitting on or held externally by steel frame structure.
BIGG MARKET PROPOSAL
In doing so the aim is to create a gesture of revealing and protrusion from the ground. The roof will be tilted towards the rest of the square, becoming a visual focal point of the area. To complete the enclosure we suggest extensive use of clear glazing, which is the least intrusive and would preserve the heritage value of the construction.
ARCHIGRAD: HIGHBRIDGE QUARTER
proposals
As a result of this procedure another half floor could be added on ground level, still allowing for direct solar access on the lower level. The positioning of the separate toilet cubicles, cut into the walls then creates the possibility for an external elevator to be installed to allow for access to all for the lower level. The newly created space could then have two separate access points for the separate floors. As the area is quite sensitive we suggest that the space is then rented on short term rentals to new and small businesses in order to test the most appropriate use of it, which could range from small café to an art gallery.

1. Experimental sketch of introducing lighting features to the old toilet. 2. Introducing strong lighting behind clear glazing - aiming for a beacon effect. 3. A detailed experimental study of light cast on the railing and roof elements. bottom: Study sketches ot different possibilities for opening the structure
A few diagrammatic studies of possible solutions to this structure were carried out. After evaluating the pros and cons of the whole concept of inhabiting the toilet we gradually shifted our focus to using it purely as a focal point in the connection between High Bridge and Pudding Chare. It would also become a destination and a feature raising the awareness of the whole area and provoking interest to step ‘on the island’. A new experiment led to further investigation of another scenario of an uninhabited toilet intervention. A simple solution was to light up the toilet from the inside to draw attention to the structure and provide a point of interest for passers-by. A straightforward laser light on top of the ventilation shafts would mark the place on Newcastle’s skyline. An idea for a consistent lighting scheme that would link High Bridge and Pudding Chare then emerged, running in both directions and starting off at the newly created beacon. This idea was later reduced to only include the toilet’s lit up glass roof. This time we emphasised on the beautiful details and shadows which the railing creates when having lights cast upon. Furthermore, it became clear that in order to work as intended, this Victorian lavatory would need to reflect the dynamic nature of Bigg Market. This is where the aforementioned concept of the ‘urban island’ came into play. We decided to further expand the idea from the toilet to the whole of Bigg Market. As a result the dynamics intent and the ‘urban island’ culminated into a much more interactive proposal, which builds upon our set of ideas on immediate low cost interventions for the square.

Bigg market plan- minimum interventions proposal not to scale
The steep slope down the square naturally leads to its main feature - the Victorian toilet.
Clear the main pedestrian route by moving the bins and placing them in an organised manner along the existing paving of the square, thus contributing to its attractiveness and giving it a more structured appearance. Also putting an info stand promoting H.B.Q. on route from Pudding Chare to High Bridge through the square.

Final concept and solution
proposals
Our imagination was provoked by the fragmented and detailed structure of the lavatory. We observed that the roof structure consists of 60 panels in two rows – the lower one out of 40 and the upper one – out of 20. This observation inspired our final proposal for the uninhabited scenario, whose culmination consists of a provocative and interactive installation. We propose that: - all the 60 separate panels are changed with new weatherproof translucent ones. - a total of 40 motion sensors to be attached on the outside of the toilet’s fence/wall respectively responding to the the 40 panels on the lower row in a close distance. 20 more sensors related to the upper row to be attached with a longer coverage to detect more distant motions. - whenever a person passes by the toilet he will trigger the individual panels with a smooth fading effect of them lighting down afterwards. The speed with which the panels switch on and off should respond to the speed of the person passing by. - this motive to be expanded throughout the whole of Bigg Market via a pattern inspired by the actual flow of people through it. In this instance the lights to be inserted into the ground, but keeping the same principle of motion detection-response. - the ‘urban island’ to be recognised and celebrated as a feature. This could be done by simply introducing a semi-permanent vinyl sticker running around its borderline. - the patterns to be recorded during the period Monday-Friday, for instance, and then the whole light show to be replayed during the weekend on a set hour, creating an event which would attract interest to the square.

The so created game of discovery will raise the awareness of the disused piece of public space, transforming the obstacles into discoveries. The interactive design aims to provoke curiosity and a desire for investigation- a desire to stay in the area. The proposed light show then becomes a celebration which will attract audience and could become a reason for the emergence of supplementary activities and opportunities for the new and small businesses in the area as well as a promotion of the High Bridge Quarter in general. Nevertheless it also aims to reinforce the visual link between the separate target areas in the brief and contribute to the expansion of the H.B.Q.
