FIVE PADEL CUP: a whirlwind of emotions and fundraising for charity

Interest in the relatively young sport of padel tennis continues to grow rapidly around the world. Padel in all its glory was on show at the inaugural Five Padel Cup from 17–19 April at the tennis and padel club in the nearby French town of Eze.

The Barbagiuans Of Monaco

The Barbagiuans of Monaco, were represented by Gaël Givet with Sébastien Squillaci (team 1), Manuel Vallaurio and Jordan Klein (team 2). President Louis Ducruet also visited the site of the tennis/padel club of Eze, in order to support the Barbagiuans training.

Founded in 1980 at the initiative of Prince Albert II, the Munegu Autu group, which later became known as the Barbagiuans of Monaco, was essentially an unofficial football team bringing together several friends of the Prince of Monaco.

In the beginning friendly games were played locally, but over the years ambition grew, and some iconic figures of Monegasque football contributed to the development of the project. Today, the Barbagiuans of Monaco is an association that seeks to bring former Monaco players and others associated with the Principality under one roof, with the active involvement of Louis Ducruet and the assistance of Prince Albert II.

In 2020, the Barbagiuans of Monaco decided to take it to the next level and set up the Fight Aids Cup. Funds from the charity match, in which Louis Ducruet’s team and Princess Stéphanie’s team meet, go to benefit Fight Aids Monaco, an association dedicated to fighting AIDS.

Success Of The Five Padel Cup

The Padel Cup was not just a spectacular sporting event, but also a charity one. All funds raised were also donated to Fight Aids Monaco.

The padel tennis tournament in Eze, which brought together a variety of competitors in a unique setting, highlighted the universal character of this beautiful sport.

Responsible for international relations for the Event, Antonella Lanfranco expressed delight with the quality of this first edition.

“We are very satisfied with this Five Padel Cup. The conviviality was there, in an exceptional sporting framework. All the elements were gathered to make a great event and, together, organizers, players, partners, sponsors… we took up the challenge. The feedback from the participants is unanimous, they are ready to come back! The mission is accomplished.”

The icing on the cake was the organisers’ announcement that Monaco will host an international Padel Best Expo next year, dedicated to padel tennis.
