Founder’s Welcome

Ofste d 201

I began Oasis in 1985 with a vision to build inclusive communities, where everyone has hope, feels they matter and is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Oasis’ first project, No. 3, which I set up with my wife Cornelia, was a hostel for young homeless people in Peckham, South London. However, it was always my aim that one day Oasis would not only run housing projects but other services including youth programmes, schools and hospitals. I grew up in South London and, as a teenager got involved in a local youth club where I learnt many life lessons, which inspired and equipped me to establish Oasis; including one about overcoming unrequited love! At the youth club – held in a church hall – I met a girl who I fell madly in love with, sadly, I quickly realised that at the age of 15 she wasn’t interested in a 14 year old boy like me. Despite this setback I came to realise that my life still had purpose. The greatest lesson I had learnt from the youth club was, that every person matters; everyone is made in the image of God and should be valued and included. And so, Oasis’ mission was born: to ensure that people and whole communities are offered the support, education and spectrum of opportunity that they deserve in order to reach their God-given potential. More than that, we know that individuals can only truly thrive when their community flourishes around them, so we work in ‘community hubs’ to provide a range of integrated and high quality services that support people holistically; educationally, physically, socially, spiritually, emotionally, economically and environmentally. Oasis has developed into a movement of many thousands of people, working in ten countries around the world, who are all committed to this goal.

Principal’s Welcome Choosing a school for your child is a very important decision. At Oasis Academy Hadley we fully understand the trust placed in us by parents and carers who chose our Academy for their children. I am very proud of what we have achieved at Oasis Academy Hadley since we opened in 2009. We provide a very good education for all our children from Nursery to Sixth Form. We treat our students as individuals and personalise learning to meet the needs of the individual. Consequently our students make good progress at the Academy, achieving examination results which enable them to move onto university and college. The Hadley Way of Aspire, Achieve, Care and Endeavour underpins our success as an Academy. Our behaviour policy sets out our expectations and has a structured system of rewards and sanctions ensuring that all students can learn in a safe environment without disruption. We have high expectations and want our students to have high aspirations and to be the best they can be.

Our first three Oasis Academies opened in 2007, the beginnings of a national network which has now developed into a substantial family of primary, secondary and all-through schools. Each Oasis Academy aims to serve the needs of its local community in a unique way, whilst sharing our ethos and holistic approach to education. That’s why Oasis Academy Hadley seeks to provide a welcoming environment for students of all faiths and none and for their parents and carers. We at Oasis are passionate about the potential of each and every person and look forward to the joy of journeying with you and your child over the coming years.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family to Oasis Academy Hadley. Together we can ensure that your son or daughter gets the best possible start to his or her life.

Our Values Learning and Living in Harmony Every child matters We identify and develop the talents and interests of all our students. Our curriculum, pastoral support and extended opportunities enable our students to engage in their education so they enjoy learning and achieve success.

Education for all All members of our community are learners. We aim to educate our students to be ready for life.

Our Vision The Hadley Way is our interpretation of our values for students and staff.

Aspire It takes a whole village to educate a child This African saying reflects the importance of the whole community in educating our children. Support goes beyond the classroom and beyond the Academy gate. The education of your child is shared. We each have our part to play and we welcome the support and involvement of parents/carers and families. As a member of the global Oasis family we benefit from working in partnership with, and learning from partners across different continents as well as those locally and nationally.

We will have the highest expectations of ourselves and others for both learning and behaviour.

Achieve We will be the best we can be.

Care We will consider others and make positive contributions to the Academy, and the local and global communities in which we live.

Love your neighbour Our work is motivated and inspired by the life, message and example of Christ. We recognise the richness that spiritual and cultural diversity brings to our community. We respect the beliefs and practices of other faiths and provide a welcoming environment for students of all faiths and those with none.

Endeavour We will be resilient, enjoy a challenge and not give up easily.

Our Curriculum At Oasis Academy Hadley we offer a flexible and relevant curriculum which is designed to enable every student to achieve their personal best. We believe that all of our students are capable of experiencing remarkable success, when given the right conditions to succeed. We expect every student to make positive progress throughout their time at the Academy regardless of their individual challenges or their starting point on entry. The Academy monitors every student’s progress closely. We know that today’s young people need to leave the Academy equipped with the knowledge and skills, but also the resilience and perspective to respond to the challenges of life in the 21st century.

Phase 1 Nursery and Reception The learning programme in Nursery and Reception is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The curriculum identifies that all children are unique and Early Years educators work alongside parents to support children’s learning. The children in Nursery and Reception learn through play with high quality literacy and numeracy lessons throughout the day.

Year 1 to 5 In year 1 to 5 the learning environment is carefully planned to support the learning and teaching in the core curriculum areas so that children can become independent and motivated learners who fulfil their true potential. We put a strong emphasis on the core areas of English Language and Literacy, Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology and Religious Education. An integrated themed approach is used to deliver the Foundation subjects: History, Music, Geography, Physical Education, Art, Design Technology and Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship.

Phase 2 Years 6 and 8 In year 6 and 7 our students follow the National Curriculum learning programmes in English, Maths, Science, ICT, Music and Physical Education, French or Spanish or additional literacy. The rest of the curriculum is delivered through our unique iLearn programme which is a skills based integrated course built on the development of students’ personal learning and thinking skills. The Humanities and Languages through the iLearn Global programme, and Art, Drama and Technology through the iLearn Create programme. Personal, Social and Health Education and Information Communication Technology underpin both aspects of the iLearn programme. In year 8 our students follow National Curriculum learning programmes in English, Maths, Science, ICT, Music and Physical Education. We build on the Year 6 and 7 programme introducing separate subjects in the Humanities, Arts and Technology to enable our students to develop their specialist skills and knowledge in these areas and support course choices for Year 9. We believe developing students’ literacy skills will help them access the curriculum in Phases 3 and 4. We offer an Accelerated Reading Programme to all students in year 6 to 8.

Phase 3 Year 9, 10 and 11 In year 9, 10 and 11 our students follow National Curriculum learning programmes in English, Maths, Science, ICT, My Life (an integrated course covering Religious Education, Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship) and Physical Education. In year 9 students begin GCSEs and BTEC courses, completing some courses in Year 9 and others continuing into year 10 and 11. We offer a full complement of GCSEs supplemented with BTEC courses.

Phase 4 Year 12 to 13 Our successful Sixth Form offers a wide range of courses. Students follow a personalised learning programme with most following Level 3 A level courses or a combination of BTEC Nationals and A Levels. Some students follow Level 2 BTEC Firsts for one year and then progress to Level 3 courses. Students have the opportunity to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This enables students to develop their research and study skills and gain valuable UCAS point through carry our in-depth independent study. All year 12 have a two week work experience placement in order to gain invaluable experience of the world, help them consider career choices and prepare for life beyond the Academy. We have strong links with many prestigious universities and many of our students win places on Summer Schools.

Homework We believe developing independent learning skills is essential to each student’s development. To this end each student will receive regular home learning activities. The amount set will depend on a student’s age and the nature of the subject.

Our Student Care We expect much from our students in terms of personal standards, discipline and attitude. In return we offer students an environment where they feel safe, secure and valued. We know that our students will face many challenges during their time at the Academy, and we believe that our pastoral system provides excellent care, guidance and support. Students and staff belong to one of six Learning Communities. In Phase 1 pastoral care is delivered by the class teacher. In Phase 2 to 4 each community is divided into Learning Groups of no more than 18, supported by a personal tutor or Learning Guide. The Class Teacher or Learning Guide gets to know the student’s interests, skills and needs. They work with the student and their parents/carers to personalise their learning, ensuring the student develops the skills needed for effective learning. The members of a Learning Group or Class will support and guide each other, sharing experiences and knowledge. We believe that students encouraging one another and offering peer support will further motivate students to succeed. In addition the Learning Communities are used to develop student leadership, competitions, performances and enterprise activities. Learning Reviews take place throughout the Academy year. In Phase 1 these are meetings with the Class Teacher. In Phase 2 to 4 Learning Guides receive information from subject teachers and provide feedback to students and their parents/carers on progress made. Discussions involving the Class Teacher or Learning Guide, parents/carers and students result in Personal Learning Programmes being developed. Time is also given to emotional and spiritual development. Class Teachers and Learning Guides help the students in their care to develop their social, moral and spiritual outlook; this is further reinforced through a weekly Assembly programme. We encourage our students to take on additional responsibilities to develop their self-confidence, leadership and presentation skills. These includes getting involved in the Learning Community and Academy Student Councils, being a Student Ambassador or Student Receptionist, taking part in assemblies and special Academy events.

Our Community Extra-curricular Activities We offer our students a wide range of extra-curricular activities for all age groups covering sport, music, arts and academic subjects. These activities give students the opportunity to develop skills and interests in a fun environment. Activities take place at lunchtime and at the end of the Academy day. All students take part in at least two offsite trips a year. We also offer residential visits in the UK and abroad.

A Full Extended Academy We offer opportunities for extended learning beyond the core Academy day. Our extended provision through our Hub team is at the centre of our community work. The team deliver a wide range of services which engage public, voluntary and business sectors in the establishment of a centre of education and lifelong learning. We aspire for the Academy to be at the heart of our local community, recognised by others for our clear understanding and support of local issues and awareness of community needs.

Admissions Students have access to extended learning beyond the core Academy day. The Library is open out of hours with the Breakfast Club running from 7.30am and after school study running until 6.00pm. Wrap round care for our youngest students runs from 8.00am to 6pm.

Community Vision The vision of the Academy is to create both an outstanding school within a community hub. The aim is for the local community to be able to access a range of services, adult learning programmes, healthy living advice and activities, sports facilities and out-of-hours youth activities. This is an Academy that serves the community, and the community is increasingly proud of us. Oasis believes that it has a duty to respect the environment through a commitment to sustainability and bio-diversity.

Oasis Academy Hadley is a fully inclusive, mixed, all-through, non-selective Academy. Admissions for Reception to Year 11 operate under the Enfield Local Education Authority’s scheme for Co-ordinated Admissions to Primary and Secondary School. Admissions to Nursery and Sixth Form are operated by the Academy. To view our Admissions Policy please visit our website www.oasisacademyhadley.org or call into the Academy reception.

Healthy Living Across the Academy there is an ethos of balanced, healthy lifestyles which is demonstrated through policies regarding Academy meals and ecological building design. We encourage students and staff to be aware of their health and well being, to consider what they eat and drink and support involvement in physical activity and sport.
