nsomnia gets the best of me on most nights — and yes, I do realize how beneficial sleep is to your overall health, yet the sandman usually doesn’t make an appearance at my house until the wee hours of the morning. However, to counteract this vicious sleep cycle of mine, I’ve decided to somewhat make up for it with excellent food choices! Hello avocados … hello antioxidants! Fresh, ripe and delicious, I’ve always held a special place in my heart for this one-of-a-kind fruit. With so many health benefits, there’s much to be thankful for. First of all, avocados can fight off sleepy eyes and signs of aging (this night owl couldn’t be happier), and a healthy dose of this green stuff also is said to regulate blood sugar, promote eye health and absorb nutrients. While the list goes on to promote this super food, I don’t want to put you Ono readers to sleep, so instead take a food journey with me as I explore the amazing avocado fare at the following Ono, You Know establishments. Up and at ’em!

Zpizza Hawaii brings a fresh and healthy approach to Italian classics since opening its doors to its Ward Centre establishment in 2008 and its Kailua location in 2010. Best known for its Southern Californian-Italian cuisine, the original Zpizza got its start in Laguna Beach, Calif., before making its way to Hawaii diners here at home. Specializing in items such as fire-baked organic pizza, fresh salads, and a variety of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, Zpizza is heaven-sent for those

eager to eat smart. “We only use high-quality ingredients in our cuisine,” says owner Cesar Llarenas. And aching for avocado, I couldn’t resist Zpizza’s avocado fiasco. California Salad? Mexican Pizza? Pollo Latina Sandwich? I was all over it. First to meet my palate was the refreshing California Salad (small $7.95, large $10.95), featuring a medley of mixed greens, red onions, crisp cucumber, fresh tomatoes, black olives and a generous topping of avocado with your choice of dressing. Next, Llarenas wooed my taste buds with Mexican Pizza (small $12.95, large $23.95, extra large $26.95), a pizza pie topped with salsa, mozzarella, spicy lime chicken, green onions, red onions, fresh avocado, sour cream and cilantro. “Our avocados are farm-grown and hand-picked,” Llarenas explains. “Avocados are very good for you, and they are packed with nutrients and vitamins.” Rich and creamy, avocados are simply irresistible. Zpizza is a pro when it comes to providing guilt-free meals abundant in taste. So, what are you waiting for? Zip on over to Zpizza Hawaii! Dining Out // Cover Story // Hinone Mizunone Story by Alana Folen | Photos by Leah Friel

ike yin and yang, Hinone Mizunone creates an ideal harmony that has worked since the restaurant’s inception in 2008. Famed for its sweet rice, which is cooked to perfection, the literal translation for hinone means “sound of fire” while mizunone translates to “sound of water.” “We cook our rice in an oldfashioned pot and that’s all you hear — the fire and the water,” says operations manager Eiki Tamaki. “We have a rice warmer, and we set the rice on high heat and then low heat before letting it sit. We have to constantly keep an eye on it, or it’ll burn. The taste definitely stands out and the texture is very fluffy,” he adds. Owned by Japanese giant Fujio Food Systems, Hinone Mizunone on South King Street is the first of its kind to open in the U.S., although there are a number of establishments planted throughout Japan. “We specialize in traditional Japanese home-style cooking,” Tamaki says. “Our rice is even served in an ohitsu instead of your typical rice bowl. “I think the consistency of the food here and our dedicated service has contributed to the restaurant’s success. We have a lot of customers who dine here many

times a week.” Head chef Teruo Aonuma blends the flavors of authentic Japanese cuisine with local culinary stylings that can’t go unnoticed. And with more than 40 years of experience in the restaurant industry, Aonuma has much to boast about. “Hinone Mizunone is all about comfort food, so whether it’s teishoku sets, a la carte options, bentos, udon, curry, sushi or our daily specials. We cater to lunch and dinner crowds in search of a good meal,” Tamaki explains. Prominent items on the menu include Maguro and Salmon Sushi Combo (Teishoku set $18), Shrimp Tempura (Teishoku set $13, side order $10) and Salmon Avocado Roll ($7.25), to name a few. And according to Tamaki, customers flock to the establishment just for a taste of Chicken “Ama-kara Age” ($11), featuring crispy fried chicken seasoned with grated daikon and topped with a sweet ginger sauce. This teishoku entrée is unique to the restaurant, and it’s served with rice, miso soup, two side dishes and tsukemono, as are all teishoku entrees. “Recently we also started serving Salmon Tempura with Vegetables (Teishoku set $13.95, side order $10.95) and Menchi Katsu (Teishoku set $12, side

order $9), and both seem to be winning over our patrons,” Tamaki states, adding, “Menchi Katsu is a hamburger katsu and it’s very common in Japan, but I haven’t seen it available here in Hawaii. I think we’re one of the first restaurants to offer it, and it’s accompanied with a side of demiglaze sauce.” While continuity is a fundamental aspect here at Hinone Mizunone, Aonuma will make changes here and there to ensure the utmost quality in his edible masterpieces. In fact, the establishment now prides itself on its new katsu batter that ameliorates a variety dishes. “The new batter is very soft and fluffy, and holds the taste of our katsu dishes. Customers really seem to enjoy the new batter, as the combination of the batter and the meat create a great harmony,” Tamaki says with a smile. “We’re simple, but what we’re doing seems to be working. As we like to say, ‘maido ookini,’ which means ‘thank you always’ in Osaka dialect.” Yes, simplicity is defined at Hinone Mizunone, and as Plato once said, “Beauty of style, harmony, grace and good rhythm depend on simplicity.” Now, what’s more harmonious than that?

hat do you get when you combine the flavors of the Philippines with the enthralling company of international singer Lani Misalucha? The ultimate Filipino fiesta, of course! Misalucha and I took our cravings for our favorite Filipino foods and headed to Max’s of Manila on Dillingham Boulevard for this week’s Dining with the Stars. “Here at Max’s it’s like I’m brought back to my childhood because what they serve at the restaurant is like a home-cooked meal,” says Misalucha, a Philippines native. “What’s so amazing about the food here is that it’s so simple, but very tasty!” Max’s attentive staff prepared an impressive spread for us complete with Mahi Mahi sa Miso soup ($9.95 regular, $16.95 large), Max’s Whole Chicken ($13.50), Kare-Kare ($12.50 regular, $18.95 large), Crispy Pata ($12.95 regular, $16.95 large), Pancit Bihon ($8.50) and more.

Story by Alana Folen :: Photos by Leah Friel “I especially love the Kare-Kare because my mom makes this dish, and Max’s Kare-Kare is so similar to how she makes it,” Misalucha says. “Max’s Fried Chicken also is so good — it’s crispy on the outside, but the inside is still so moist and seasoned perfectly. The same goes for Crispy Pata.” As the first mega-star from the Philippines to headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip, Misalucha has made her way to the Islands, taking Waikiki by storm with her glitzy,

be a lot of new dimensions that people can look forward to,” Misalucha says. In the new show format, Misalucha will trace Hawaii’s musical eras from the 1920s to today. She’ll also entertain audiences with a romantic movie medley as well as a Broadway medley. However, the show will still incorporate a fastpaced and inviting selection of her signature covers and interpretations of musical icons such as Britney Spears, Tina Turner and Celine Dion.

Tasty treats on the go

I

f I could, I would eat all day long, but somehow I sometimes skip lunch because I’m just too busy. Oftentimes, lunch is eaten at my desk or in my car. So, it’s nice when you find a restaurant that offers not just takeout, but really quick takeout such as okazu-yas or Japanese delicatessens, where the food is already prepared and you can just pick up and go. At Sekiya’s Restaurant & Delicatessen across Kaimuki High School next to Market City Shopping Center, you’ll find a great assortment of okazu and it’s totemo oishii (very delicious).

1

Its most popular okazu item is Hash Tempura balls (85 cents each), which is made with corned beef hash and potatoes, and deep fried in a tempura batter. “We’ve been told ours is the best,” shares Joy Morihara, general manager. Also popular are Inari Sushi ($1.35), Fried Chicken (around $1.25 depending on size), Fried Noodles ($1.95), Shoyu Hot Dog (55 cents), Namasu (small $1.35), Potato Tempura ($1.10) and Shrimp Tempura ($1.75). If you prefer to dine-in but still are in a rush, Saimin ($4.95 small, $6.95 large, $8.95 extra-large) is cooked to order and can be made in about five minutes. It comes with charsiu and green onion, and a homemade broth or dashi that is made with shrimp, vegetables and chicken. You also can add bean sprouts for 80 cents, and/or vegetables for $1.30. Customers also often order it with BBQ Meat Sticks ($1.95 each). “Our food is local homestyle cooking, something your mom or grandmother would’ve cooked,” adds Morihara. “It’s Japanese dishes with a local flavor.” 1 Large saimin ($6.95) with BBQ Sticks ($1.95 each) 2 Hash Tempura (85 cents each) 3 Sekiya’s okazu plate offers many tasty options.

f you’re a fan of the edible fungus — button, crimini, portabello, shiitake, oyster, porcini … some delicate, others quite meaty — you know that mushrooms lend themselves well to nearly any dish, adding an earthy flavor and unique texture. Mushroom soup, mushroom risotto, stuffed mushrooms … they pair well with so many foods, it’s no surprise that, when it comes to vegetarian fare, ’shrooms often take the spotlight. At Kit n Kitchen, co-owner and chef May Yiu knows firsthand how popular mushrooms are with non-meat eaters, and she recommends Mixed Mushroom Spaghetti with oil and garlic ($10.95). Mmmm. The dish is comprised of three varieties: familiar button, delicate enoki with their long, slender stem that pair nicely with strands of spaghetti, and savory shiitakes — all sauteed in a garlic and oil sauce and tossed with spaghetti. “It's a very, very popular dish,” says Yiu. Sakura’s flowering menu By Ali Resich

R

ight on the main drag of South King Street, with its busy lanes and bounty of shops, lies a calming oasis of casual elegance, perfect for savoring traditional Japanese fare. Sakura Terrace Japanese Cafe, which opened last November, has sparked conversation for its fresh seafood and classic renditions of donburi, sushi and grilled meats. The restaurant’s Mother’s Day Special ($28), available May 13 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., will showcase a little bit of everything, all within a breezy indoor-outdoor seating area. What better way to show appreciation for Mom?

Begin the abundant meal with Miso Soup, Okara Potato Salad and a Tossed Salad enhanced with refreshingly delicious ginger dressing. Then explore an exuberant assortment of Sashimi and delicately Spicy Ahi. The feast continues with Teriyaki Chicken as well as

Saikoro Steak with ginger sauce. After that, you’ll dive into one of the special’s premier dishes — Gomoku Chirashi. This bowl of flavor combines shrimp, unagi, shiitake mushrooms, marinated bamboo shoots, ikura, tobiko and tamago and nori strips on a bed of rice.

Dessert choices include yummy creations such as Wafu Jelly Dessert, made with silky matcha kanten (Japanese gelatin), creamy milk kanten, sweet azuki beans and a drizzle of kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup). The cafe also boasts a recently extended menu with additional entrees, vegetable dishes and sides. A fully stocked bar, sakes and exclusive Savory

Sakura ($8.50) cocktail add new layers to any meal as well. From celebrating holidays to casual lunches or dinners, Sakura Terrace never disappoints. As marketing director Marilyn Cariaga describes, “It’s a place where you sit and relax. I think that’s important for a dining experience — take the time to enjoy it.”

T

o quote the outstanding photographer whose art graces this page, pupus at Hy’s Steakhouse are “straight-up goodness.” Leah isn’t wrong. The celebrated Waikiki restaurant that has happily served an untold number of local and visiting diners for 35 years has appetizers that are more than just appetizing, they are, in fact, straight-up good. A good example of this is Scampi A La Blue Fox ($16.95). The jumbo shrimp are sautéed in a butter, lemon, white wine, garlic and basil sauce that leaves the sweet sea creatures moist and delicious. Served with garlic mashed potatoes, this meal starter starts edging its way into an entree — not that there's anything wrong with that. Escargot A La Hy’s ($15.95) is another tasty way to bide your time until the main course arrives. The tender snails are baked with Dijon mustard, butter, garlic, bleu cheese and topped with a crunchy Parmesan bread topping. A fun adventure in any fine-dining establishment is seeing how the staff

re-creates simple comfort dishes. At Hy’s, Ahi and Scallop Katsu ($15.95) is such an adventure. Made with fresh ahi and sweet scallops, the panko-crusted treats are served with either a Wasabi Aioli — which is more aromatic than spicy — or a cocktail sauce with a bit of kick of its own. A final recommendation is Fresh Mozzarella and Vine Ripened Tomatoes ($10.95). While technically a salad item, the red and yellow vine-ripened tomatoes from Wow Farms on the Big Island are savory enough for dinner and sweet enough for dessert. The tomatoes mix perfectly with the mozzarella, baby greens and a reduced balsamic vinaigrette, and provide a refreshing beginner to the massive steak that is just waiting to be served.

Executive Chef Brett Villarmia with RumFire’s Spiked Tea masterpieces.

ituated along iconic Waikiki Beach, flanked by views of Diamond Head and honu feeding in the crystal blue waters below, RumFire Waikiki defines the term hot spot as guests soak up the sun by day and revel in the glow of the surrounding fire pits by night. Diners are treated to an assortment of Pacific Rim and contemporary “social comfort food” from the creative mind of Executive Chef Brett Villarmia, and do so in a relaxing setting that features both indoor and outdoor seating within the pristine Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. While visitors and kamaaina rave about the menu, which features the freshest local ingredients, and the bar, home to more than 100 varieties of rum, RumFire is poised to add another alluring element to its repertoire. Dining Out readers are treated to yet another inside scoop as RumFire launches its Spiked Tea menu — billed as anything but your Tutu’s tea party. Starting Mother’s Day and continuing every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., diners will be treated to a delectable assortment of sliders, desserts and “spiked” teas that are sure to turn the tables on traditional tea gatherings. “What if we reinvent afternoon tea?” says Diana Su, public relations manager for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Waikiki, when discussing the inspiration for the Spiked Tea offerings. “We keep all the traditions of tea and dainty finger sandwiches, but kick it up a notch with spiked tea — alcoholic beverages that all incorporate tea — and sliders with multiple fillings.” The sliders ($5 for two) steal the show, offering fresh and hearty ingredients that elevate finger food to the next level — leaps and bounds above archaic “finger” sandwiches. Diners may select from five different sliders: The Remedy (ground black Angus beef, Italian truffle cheese, caramelized onions and summer truffle aioli), The Twisted (braised beef short rib and cole slaw), The Little Saigon (tamarind marinated chicken and young papaya salad), The Spiked (herb marinated mahi mahi and shredded cabbage slaw) and The Skinny (fresh

mozzarella, macadamia nut romesco and Haumakua tomato). “High Tea is known for its drinks and finger foods, so we wanted to put a twist on it and modernize the experience,” Villarmia says. “It’s something different, something for a younger generation. I wanted to introduce RumFire in a different way. This would be another way to get to know what we’re all about with some of these sample bites.” In addition to the sliders, the Spiked Tea menu also features side orders ($5 apiece) of Tatas (crispy fried tater tots tossed in white truffle oil and Parmesan cheese) and Frisky Fries (chili-dusted Yukon fries). And if that wasn’t enough, “Happy Endings” ($5 each) also are available, and include Red Decadence (red velvet cake bites with cream cheese frosting), Chocolate Addiction (chocolate mousse, dark chocolate and hazelnut puffed rice) and The Tart (calamansi lime curd, chocolate paint and Italian meringue). And, of course, Spiked Tea would not be complete without a vast selection of Tea Cocktails ($10 each). Lavender Mint incorporates American Harvest Vodka — an organic, handcrafted spirit — with double strength black tea, house-made lavender syrup along with fresh lime and mint. On the lighter end of the spectrum, Plantation Pineapple features Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Vodka, Skyy Pineapple Vodka, chilled black tea, lime and pineapple — the ultimate twist on the traditional

Plantation Iced Tea. Guests can combine offerings into a set, aptly dubbed High Tea Experience ($20). The assortment contains a cocktail, two sliders and a dessert selection. The only decision remaining for diners is whether to share with tablemates or go at it alone—a regrettable decision once the Tatas are all gone.

n addition to its great homestyle Chinese food, Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine also makes its customers feel right at home with its friendly, helpful customer service. Director of sales Armando B. Bauzon is passionate about going above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. Bauzon first started working at the restaurant as a manager back in 2004, then left for a few years to work in other restaurants. He recently returned to Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine when the new management took over, and he couldn’t be happier. “I am so happy that I came back and get to see all of my regular customers coming back,” he says, smiling. “I really take care of the people who always come over here. We are Director of sales like family.” Armando B. Bauzon With its goal of keeping customers happy, Ho Ho considers customer input when it comes to creating new dishes or modifying menu items. “We like to ask people how they like the food,” Bauzon explains. And so far, the feedback is great — customers often praise Ho Ho for its quality, fresh cuisine. “I really like to see a lot of the old regular customers coming back,” he says. “I am happy to come back, too … It’s like a reunion.”

fter being in Kapolei for a decade, Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine has drawn in a dedicated following of regular customers. The restaurant’s versatility surely has something to do with this. Ho Ho offers an extensive a la carte menu and dim sum favorites, and also is available to cater or host any special occasion with its party trays. And then, of course, there is the Ho Ho buffet. “It's a great deal,” director of sales Armando B. Bauzon says of the buffet. “And people love it; they are always telling us how good the food is.” Some of the most popular buffet items include Crab Legs and Shrimp Walnut, which are offered daily for dinner. Other buffet offerings include Fried Rice, Gon Lo Mein, Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings, Orange Chicken, Egg Roll, Crispy Won Ton and Beef Broccoli. And on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well as daily for lunch, customers can feast on Salt and Pepper Shrimp, which is one of the restaurant’s most highly demanded items. The dinner buffet is offered nightly

1 6 | D I N I N G O U T | M AY 6 - 1 2 , 2 0 1 2

starting at 5 p.m. and is priced at $15.95 Monday through Thursday and $17.95 Friday through Sunday. The lunch buffet, which is offered from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., costs $9.95 Monday through Thursday and $11.95 Friday through Sunday. (Note that the buffet prices listed are for adults; the kids’ prices vary according to the child's height, and keiki under 3 feet tall eat for free.) “We like to help people budget their expenses,” Bauzon says of the restaurant’s affordable buffet. “We are trying to help people, and that’s one of the reasons that they come back.” Just last month, new management — a sister company of restaurant Jade Dynasty — took over Ho Ho. The new leaders aim to offer improved customer service and even more quality food. But longtime cus-

tomers need not worry — Ho Ho still serves up the same dishes. In addition to its buffet, Ho Ho also offers dim sum, including Pork Hash (80 cents), Shrimp Dumpling (80 cents) and its much raved about Steamed Manapua ($1.35) or Baked Manapua ($1.45). Dim sum is available for pick-up from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. A la carte dishes include tasty items such as Roast Duck Noodle Soup ($7.25), Sauteed Scallop and Fish Fillet ($13.50), and Seafood Garlic Fried Rice ($8.95). And if you’re planning a get-together, Ho Ho is an ideal location. The restaurant normally holds about 200 people, but for special arrangements made in advance, it can accommodate 300 to 400 guests. In addition to offering a welcoming, causal place to enjoy any occasion, Ho Ho offers another benefit to hosting your party here:

All the food is made fresh. “When the trays are running low, we always cook up the food fresh,” Bauzon says. In keeping with Ho Ho’s tradition of offering up specials for various holidays, the eatery has more good eats cooking for Mother’s Day. The Mother’s Day Special, served May 13, will include even more buffet options. Prices for adults are $14.95 for lunch and $22.95 for dinner. Kids prices stay the same. The additions are not finalized yet, as the chefs are still in the kitchen cooking up new items. Contact Christina O’Connor at diningout@staradvertiser.com

hen brainstorming restaurant ideas for breakfast or dinner, the Nimitz airport area probably doesn’t come to mind very often. Sometimes, though, thinking outside the box can lead you to a pleasantly unexpected surprise, one that may await at Plaza Café. A landmark restaurant within Best Western hotel, Plaza Café has been serving kamaaina, short-term hotel guests and military families since the 1970s. “We serve breakfast seven days a week and have dinner four days (a week). A lot of locals come for the seafood buffet,” says Plaza Café manager Rudy Fao. “We also have a lot of transient guests, tourists coming and going. Another big seller is the military. They usually stay at the hotel for long term until their housing is arranged.” A charming restaurant,

You can expect great food, great service, as always. It’s going to be very festive,” adds Fao. If you cannot make it for Mother’s Day, Plaza Café offers a similar dinner buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings priced at $30.95 (adults), $26.95 (adults, but does not include crab legs) and $16.95 (kids ages 4-10). Opulicious oblivion By Alana Folen

T

wist your way to Opulicious Restaurant on Coolidge Street for an unforgettable dining experience. With unbelievable local favorites gracing the menu and balloon creations putting smiles on the faces of patrons, Opulicious holds the recipe to success.

Teriyaki Pork ($5.95)

“We have a variety of customers,” says owner and chef Kelli Kay Chun, noting that Opulicious is the first balloon-themed restaurant in the nation. “I’m a balloon artist as well, so a lot of kids really enjoy the balloon animals I make for them.” In addition, many flock to the eatery to savor homemade local grinds from recipes derived from Chun and her mother. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, meals are always made fresh to order. “We want customers to try our KC Waffle Dog ($3.50),” Chun says. “It’s a blast to the past. Waffle dogs were really popular during the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.” KC Waffle Dog features a hot dog nestled inside a special waffle batter, which Chun explains is made from a secret recipe. The dish is served a la carte and is accompanied by a tasty relish for dipping. Add cheese to

your KC Waffle Dog for an additional 50 cents. “Right now we’re also featuring our Teriyaki Pork ($5.95). It’s delicious. The thin slices of pork are marinated in a homemade teriyaki sauce. It’s our May special,” Chun states. Teriyaki Pork is served with two scoops of rice (white or brown) and your choice of mac or tossed salad. Opulicious also offers catering services and takeout options for hungry diners on the go.

Uniqueness and Spice at RED HOUSE IN HONOLULU Where: 835 Keeaumoku St. #I-101B, Honolulu Call: 944.0088 Hours: Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-midnight STORY BY KELLI SHIROMA PHOTOS BY NATHALIE WALKER

D

escribed by its owner as a “Korean fusion” restaurant, Red House in Honolulu is a bit different from many local Korean eateries. Red House in Honolulu, located on Keeaumoku Street, is eye-catching for numerous reasons, whether it be the clean, white-and-red stylish décor of the eatery’s interior or the Kpop music videos projected onto its white walls. “It’s (Red House in Honolulu) a little different from regular Korean barbecue,” says owner Justin Chun. “We mix the local and traditional way, so we call it Korean fusion. It (our restaurant) has a really stylish look and we have K-pop playing while you enjoy your meal.” Red House in Honolulu opened last December and is usually the busiest during the weekends for dinner. As far as its name is concerned, “Red House” can imply what types of food you will find on the menu. “Spice symbolizes Korean

food, so ‘red’ symbolizes spice,” Chun says. On Mother’s Day only, Chun says that Bulgogi Pizza ($12.99) — featuring Bulgogi topping on a pan-fried rice crust — will be offered free to customers. “Bulgogi Pizza is a popular dish,” says Chun. “We use crispy rice instead of bread.” At Red House in Honolulu, customers will find a vast array of unique entrees, such as Pizza Tonkatsu ($10.99/$13.99) — pork cutlet covered with pizza toppings and sauce — Red

House Special Galbi ($14.99/$23.99), a grilled beef short rib with sweet pumpkin and grilled garlic, and Cheese Bob ($13.99), or fried rice mixed with mozzarella cheese, kimchi, bulgogi, curry shrimp and Spam. The most popular dishes at Red House in Honolulu, however, include Japchae on Garlic Bread ($4.99) — traditional Korean Noodles on Garlic Bread — Kimchi Jun ($5.99 small portion, $9.99 regular portion), or Koreanstyle spicy pancakes made with Kimchi, and Bibimbob ($13.99), (from left) Manager Minho Kim, owner Justin Chun and waiter Jun Cho

fresh vegetables with homemade Gochujang sauce on rice. Chun also says the eatery offers a good variety of cold noodle dishes, including Spicy Noodle ($9.99) — buckwheat noodles with Red House spicy sauce — Kimchee Cold Noodle ($11.99), a cold noodle dish mixed with kimchee and spicy and sweet sauce, and Jjolmen ($19.99), featuring thick, buckwheat noodles with a spicy and sweet sauce (for two people). While these dishes are popular customer orders, Chef Special Boneless Moa ($14.99/$23.99) — fried boneless chicken thighs with green onion — reigns as Red House’s signature dish. “The boneless chicken is the house special,” confirms Chun. “We use fresh chicken, not frozen chicken.” For those who enjoy extremely spicy food and traditional Korean dishes, Chun recommends the various Topokki entrees, including Red House Topokki ($11.99) — rice cake with original spicy sauce — and Red House Top & Noodle ($15.99), featuring

Chef Special Boneless Moa ($24, current price) the Red House Topokki with ramen noodles. “Topokki is traditional (Korean) food, spicy mochi,” Chun explains. “We don’t recommend it for local people (because of the spiciness).” In addition to its unique appetizers and entrees, Red House in Honolulu provides delicious, distinctive and refreshing beverages for its clientele. “We have Red House Fruit Wine ($17.99), which is a rice wine, but we have fruit flavors, including Pineapple, Kiwi and Mandarin Orange,” Chun shares. “We also serve Korean Soju ($10.99) and Korean Beer ($4.99).” In the next few weeks, Red House in Honolulu will introduce a new menu to its customers. But not to worry; many of the same dishes will be on it, according to Chun. “We’re just going to add more descriptions because this current menu doesn’t have as many, and we’re going to rearrange the prices so some of the dishes are cheaper,” he says.
