ick and Megan’s family room was missing just one thing: the family. Their two young children were taking over this grand space with a mishmash of toys, books and games. This left little room for Dick and Megan and Megan’s parents, who live on the third floor of this beautiful old home. Dick and Megan wanted a multigenerational family room that would promote some “together time.” They also wanted to organize the books and toys, and make the room more appealing to adults. This space had some wonderful features, including beautiful leaded windows overlooking the garden, a fireplace and classic hardwood

floors. But peeling paint on the radiators, an understated mantelpiece and unsuitable furniture groupings were detracting from the room’s true potential. The main point of interest was the fireplace, so I decided to give it a radical facelift with a gorgeous new fireplace surround and over-mantel made from cast stone. This manmade product looks like real stone but actually is cast in rubber moulds and then cemented into place with mortar. Although this elegant look

does not come cheaply, I justified the cost by reworking and repairing the room’s existing cabinetry and shelves and re-

A family-owned-and– operated venture, Da Wing Trading opened its doors last year at 2006 Republican St., offering solid wood cabinets with plywood boxes (no MDF, particle board or pressed wood) and granite countertops out of its 8,000 square feet of warehouse and showroom space. “We own the property where we store in-stock cabinets and granite, thus we don’t have to pay rent, which enables us to pass the savings on to our customers,” said Harry Kwan, manager. “We sell (our products) at affordable prices, which are the people’s prices,” added Kwan’s uncle Tommy Chan, who works in the

Kwan goes on to note that the family decided to invest in the 10,000-square-foot property rather than renting it out because they saw it as a good long-term investment for future generations. Additionally, the property has ample on-site parking, a scarcity in the industrial Kalihi area. “That’s something very important to have,” Chan stated. Though Da Wing Trading only deals in cabinets and countertops at the moment, Kwan explains that they carry those made of quality

materials. For example, countertops are made from granite imported from China, while cabinets are made using alder and maple woods. “These are solid woods, the good woods,” said Chan of the cabinets, which come standard with softclose hardware and are available in four different color variations, including light cherry, maple, white (maple) and dark cherry (alder only). “Cabinets and countertops go hand-in-hand,” Kwan said. “We chose to focus on granite for countertops because it is a unique, sturdy, natural rock, and a high-quality addition that can enhance the look and feel of a kitchen or bathroom.” And for home-improvers looking for a little advice on their next kitchen or bath renovation, Da Wing Trading’s staff of profession-

broken hinges. So we repaired the doors and added a decorative mesh screen inset to the central section of shelving. The screen conceals some of the contents while adding a touch of elegance. The old white shelves were replaced with new wooden shelves painted in a rich chocolate brown. The same color was painted on the walls behind the shelves to add depth and interest. The radiators drew the eye with their chipped and peeling paint. To disguise them and blend them into the roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s architecture, we designed custom radiator covers and painted them a fresh ivory color. Dick and Megan had already installed recess-

ed halogen lights in the ceiling, so I decided to add some variety. We installed two sconces on either side of the fireplace and an elegant chandelier over a game table in front of one of the windows. This area is the perfect place for the

adults to read the paper, play chess or share a chat and a cup of tea. Since the family roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s windows overlooked the garden, privacy was not an issue. The view was gorgeous, so instead of covering up those spectacular leaded

windows, I designed flowing two-tone sheers to frame the glass and bring some of the great outdoors inside. In fact, all that greenery outside the room inspired my palette of moss green, bark brown and mustard. These colors are worked into the roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s furnishings and accessories and are set off by the soft vanilla cream on the walls. To finish off this spectacular space, I brought in a couple of comfy leather chairs and snuggled them up to the fireplace. A new sectional sofa, an armoire that holds lots of toys and an elegant table and chairs for the adults completed the look, and pulled everything together. Now Dick and Megan can take pleasure in the family room they were looking for. TRY ‘TECHORATING’ FOR FUNCTIONAL, STYLISH RESULTS ome interior design trends are hard to understand. That jagged piece of cement that is supposedly a chair or headache-inducing paint color may look great in the glossy pages of a design magazine, but would average people really want it in their own living room? Fortunately, there is a growing trend in interior design that is easy to understand, relatable and applicable in almost every home — this trend is called “techorating.” “‘Techorating’ is the blending of technology into the overall design of a room to

create functional, stylish and unique environments that work well and look great,” said Janna Robinson, technology and design expert. “This design trend grows from the integral role technology now plays in our lives.” Robinson offers some helpful tips for incorporating the techorating trend into your home:

Flat screens are popular not only for the superior viewing experience they provide, but also for their visual appeal. Manufacturers have taken TV aesthetics to the next level, offering ultra-slim models. LG has gone even further with its Cinema Screen design, which is a nearly frameless TV that provides a streamlined look. Next, because more Americans are entertaining at home, it is important to maximize the viewing experience for the maximum number of viewers. For some TVs, viewing angle can be an issue. Robinson recommended arranging seating so that everyone has a good view of the screen, while still allowing traffic to flow freely around seats. Sectionals and modular sectionals provide flexible seating configurations. For smaller spaces, bean bags, decorative poufs and floor pillows can provide extra seating without overpowering the space. Look for TVs that are designed to maximize viewing angles. Next-generation 3D TVs like the Cinema 3D models from LG provide a wide range of viewing angles in 2D and 3D so content display remains

Techorating techniques use color and design to create a comfortable, functional background for technology. For example, painting the wall behind your TV a darker color (like chocolate brown) not only helps with distracting glares, but also gives the illusion of depth to the space. Similarly, dressing up bare walls, floors and wooden furniture with varying texture and fabrics such as area rugs and curtains can help absorb sound and improve the listening quality in a room. Don’t overdo it, though; too much carpeting and heavy curtains can make sound seem muffled. Instead, add some bookshelves or even hung art to create reflective surfaces that will help break up sound waves. A mixture of surfaces and materials will provide the best sound quality. Keep in mind, Robinson said, that you don’t have to completely redecorate your room to achieve techorating harmony. “I’m a big fan of repurposing and melding old with new,” she says. “If your couch has a solid frame, update it by reupholstering it, or try a new decorative pillow cover. If you have existing furniture that needs a little sprucing up, paint or stain it for a fresh new look.”
