H
appy Sunday, Ono readers! It’s been one brutal week for me. I recently caught a pesky virus that I just couldn’t seem to rid of. Fever, body aches, dizziness, nausea, chills, sore throat, congestion and cough attacks that kept me up all night — you name it, I had it. Yet, of course, we all know that there’s no rest for the weary, and even though I was lacking an appetite (that’s a first!), I knew I had to make the most of my illness. So, for what it’s worth, I figured why not explore the realms of ginger? A fleshy and aromatic root, ginger has been used in cooking and healing for centuries, and is believed to be a powerful antioxidant that can relieve many health problems, including cough, headache, nausea, dizziness and more. Superb! I was in luck! So, this week, I ventured on the road to recovery and submerged myself in a complete ginger paradise. And thanks to the following Ono, You Know establishments and their premier ginger specialties, I’m starting to feel like myself once again!
Above: The editor loves the health benefits of ginger, and can’t get enough of Canton Seafood’s Beef with Ginger and Onion ($10.99) and Sauteed Seabass Filet with Ginger and Onion ($11.99) Right: Anytime Cafe’s Hai-Nan Chicken Rice ($12.75) 2 | DINING OUT | JUNE 10-16, 2012
To begin my search for ono grinds to help rid this cold of mine, I headed to Canton Seafood Restaurant on Keeaumoku Street. Open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight, this popular eatery among locals boasts tasty and authentic Northern Chinese cuisine, including a wide array of flavorful entrees highlighting ginger. “We have Ginger Chicken, Oyster with Ginger and Onion Sizzling Platter, Ginger and Green Onion Lo Mein (noodles), Chinese Broccoli with Ginger Sauce — there’s so many ginger items on the
By My Side
menu,” says assistant manager Elvin Man. And while all of these options are alluring in their own right, it was Canton Seafood’s Beef with Ginger and Onion ($10.99) and Sauteed Seabass Filet with Ginger and Onion ($11.99) that made my mouth water with absolute delight. Beef with Ginger and Onion is a classic as it’s sauteed to perfection and features morsels of tender beef, slices of fresh ginger and a dash of green onion. Not a meat eater? Sauteed Seabass Filet with Ginger and Onion also packs on a punch with its abundance of ginger flair, and the house special shoyu sauce that accompanies it is nothing short of amazing. “We use a lot of ginger in our dishes because it tastes good and it’s also very good for your health,” Man explains. “There’s an old Chinese proverb that says, ‘Every good quality is contained in ginger.’ Ginger is an excellent source of minerals, especially potassium and vitamin B6.” So, with that I piled my plate full of these glorious ginger creations and a scoop of rice, certain that I’d be on my way back to health with the very first bite! Anytime Café Anytime I’m feeling down, Anytime Cafe knows how to lift my spirits with its renowned signature cuisine. And now that I’m under the weather, this coveted eatery located in Market City Shopping Center
has definitely helped to cure this persistent cold. As soon as I inquired about the restaurant’s ginger specialties, owner Cindy Wong wasted no time in presenting me with Hai-Nan Chicken Rice. Priced at $12.75 (add $2 for thigh portion), this succulent dish features pieces of tender chicken wing and breast, which is cooked in a house special sauce that is jaw-droppingly good and decorated with bits of green onion. – See page 12

ight in the heart of Kapolei you’ll find Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine, your one-stop shop for all of your local Chinese favorites at an affordable price. Dining Out recently took our cravings to this thriving foodie metropolis of sorts best known for its allyou-can-eat buffet, extensive a la carte options and plethora of dim sum creations. Let’s just say our advice is simple: Come hungry! “We have a large selection of items in our buffets that local people love, and our prices are very reasonable,” says director of sales Armando Bauzon. Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine has called Kapolei home for a decade, and has reeled in the appetites of
West Oahu residents and others across the state. This renowned eatery also is quite popular among party-goers seeking out the best deals. “Here you can hold parties for any occasion. We can seat close to 400 guests if needed,” Bauzon exclaims. “Birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, graduation parties — we do it all! “There are more than 30 items offered in our lunch buffet and more than 30 offered in our dinner buffet as well. What’s not to love?” he asks with a laugh. And while there are the usual favorites, such as Beef Broccoli, Orange Chicken, Egg Rolls, Fried Rice, Gon Lo Mein and more fea-
tured in the buffet line, diners can’t seem to get their fill of Snow Crab, Shrimp Walnut, Salt and Pepper Shrimp and Ho Ho’s famous Fried Chicken Wings. “Everyday for lunch and on Friday through Sunday nights we have our Salt and Pepper Shrimp available, and our customers keep coming back for more,” Bauzon says. “Dinnertime is all about the snow crab.” The dinner buffet is presented nightly starting at 5 p.m. and is priced at $15.95 Monday through Thursday and $17.95 Friday through Saturday. The lunch buffet, which is offered from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., costs $9.95 Monday through Thursday and $11.95
Friday through Sunday. According to Bauzon, there are special buffet prices for keiki as well, so inquire within. “Popular among our patrons during lunchtime is Lemon Chicken, and the hot item right now is Butterfish with Black Bean Sauce,” Bauzon states. This past April, Ho Ho’s was taken over by new management (a sister company of Jade Dynasty Seafood Restaurant), and Bauzon couldn’t be happier with the positive response the restaurant has received. “We’ve been very busy and we have a lot of returning customers. No where else on this side of town can you find this kind of selection

and great customer service. “Our main goal is to work within our customers’ budgets and help them save money. That’s why our buffet is so affordable,” he adds. And if you choose to personalize your meal, Bauzon recommends ordering from the a la carte menu, which includes a wide array of delicious Cantonese cuisine, such as Beef or Pork with Twin Mushroom ($7.50), Kau Yuk ($7.50) and Stir-Fried Fish Filet with Vegetables ($8.95), among others. However, don’t be distracted by the buffet and a la carte options alone. If you’re crazy about dim sum, Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine
showcases an outstanding variety of delectable treats Monday through Saturday from as early as 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. as well. “The most requested dim sum are Pork Hash (80 cents each), Half Moon (80 cents each), Steamed Manapua ($1.35 each), Baked Manapua ($1.45 each) and Mini Manapua (85 cents each). You also can place takeout orders for dim sum,” Bauzon says, noting
Ho Ho’s efforts to give its patrons the most convenient options possible. In fact, the establishment even features same-day catering services, only requiring a three-hour advanced notice. “We’re happy to see that our catering is really doing well, there are so many items to choose from,” Bauzon adds. So, what exactly makes Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine stand out from the rest? Easy. According to Bauzon, freshness is key. “Everything here is made fresh. Nothing is sitting in the buffet line for too long.”

n the heels of this season’s American Idol finale, I decided to catch up with Hawaii’s first ever American Idol contestant Jordan Segundo. As a talented singer and performer, and most importantly, a true foodie at heart, Segundo was more than happy to accompany me to Jade Dynasty Seafood Restaurant in Ala Moana Center to tackle some of the best in Chinese cuisine for this week’s Dining with the Stars. “I love Chinese food and I’m a big fan of Jade Dynasty,” says Segundo, who started singing at the age of 5. “Here they serve authentic Chinese food and the quality of the food really is superb. Everything is prepared perfectly and flavored just right. There’s always something new on the menu, which I appreciate and always look forward to tasting,” he adds. “The presentation of the food also is always beautiful. You have to make sure
Story by Alana Folen :: Photos by Leah Friel you take a photo of the food before you eat it!” And once restaurant general manager Gary Chan presented us with a feast fit for kings and the photos were snapped picture-perfectly, we pigged out on everything from Crispy Roast Beef ($17.95) to Chicken with Roasted Garlic ($17.95), Honey Walnut Shrimp ($16.95) and Snow Mountain Char Siu Bun ($3.50), just to name a few. “The Crispy Roast Beef is really nice and tender, and I like that the outside is a little crispy,” Segundo exclaims. “I like the chick-
en, too, you can taste the garlic, but it’s not too overpowering — everything is blended together perfectly.” And what would a genuine Chinese meal be without paying tribute to Segundo’s favorite, Honey Walnut Shrimp? “I mean, what can I say? It’s a classic dish, and I like the way they serve it at Jade Dynasty because the sauce is at the perfect consistency and the batter is cooked just right,” he says. So, while Segundo has a devout love for dining, his true passion is found in singing. In fact, Segundo recently participated in two student tours throughout the
state with Adults Friends for Youth and the D.A.R.E. program, where he performed for and spoke to Hawaii’s youth, encouraging them to stay drug-free and pursue their dreams. And now, you can catch Segundo on stage Tuesday through Saturday at 8:30 p.m. through June 16 in the Magic of Polynesia Showroom at Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort. He will join awardwinning performers Rocky Brown, Starr Kalahiki and Little Albert as part of a special engagement of Roberts Hawaii’s Return to Paradise Starring Lani
Misalucha show. They will lend their voices to the Hawaii-inspired musical production while Misalucha currently fulfills a previous commitment on the Mainland. "Being a part of the Return to Paradise show is a great experience for me, and I’m thrilled to share the stage with such talented singers and musicians. I’m grateful to Roberts Hawaii for including me in this great production,” Segundo shares. “Audiences can expect an exciting show with four great singers and a lot of variety — everything from
Hawaiian to Broadway, from pop to swing and even some impersonations as well. So there’s something for everyone. We’re all very different and we all bring our unique style to the show, but combined together it creates a really entertaining show.” For reservations and more information, call 971.4321 or visit LaniInWaikiki.com. A special kamaaina discount admission rate of $30 for adults and $25 for children also is available for Hawaii residents with a valid I.D. for shows scheduled until June 16.

appy Portugal Day!
Officially known as Dia de Camoes, de Portugal e das Comunidades Portuguesas, today (June 10) is Portugal’s national holiday celebrating its rich history and culture. It also marks the death of poet Luis de Camoes, who wrote Portugal’s national epic poem titled Os Lusiadas. In Hawaii, Adega Portuguesa Restaurant & Bar in Chinatown celebrates the festive occasion with traditional Portuguese dancers. But the main attraction is, of course, the food, which is available every day. “Our head chef Ruben Olivera is from Portugal and our recipes are passed down from generations,” says general manager
General manager Tanner Scotson
Tanner Scotson. “The food is like home-cooking, something you’d expect if you went to your friend’s house and their parents were cooking. It’s traditional Portuguese food with a relaxing ambience.” Some of the popular dishes on the menu are Vinho D’alhos ($19) — pork loin marinated in a vinegar-garlic sauce and served with sauteed onions, fried potatoes and sauteed mixed vegetables — and Bacalhau A Adega ($22), which is a boneless filet of codfish topped with onions, red peppers and garlic, and served with roasted red potatoes and sauteed mixed vegetables. Offered are Arroz Doce ($3), which is a traditional homemade sweet rice pudding with cinnamon, Serradura ($3) — a traditional Portuguese layered dessert with a condensed milk base, and Adega Style Creme Brulee ($3). Locally owned by Antonio “Trigo” Da Silva, Adega opened its bar in February and then the restaurant in March in the space previously occupied by Mei Sum restaurant, which has moved to Nuuanu. A municipal parking garage is just steps away, as well as metered street parking. Flavorful and eventful, Adega

tures uptempo Korean music videos and appetizers such as Korean Noodle and Garlic Bread ($5.99). Traditional garlic bread is topped with rice noodles, cheese and a soy-based sauce that results
in a salty, sweet and chewy starter that is satisfying without being heavy. The small microgreen salad with a honey mustard vinaigrette just adds to the appeal. Popcorn Shrimp ($5.99), is perhaps not a traditional Korean dish, which makes it a perfect addition to the menu. However, the sweet, moist shrimp that is coated with a crispy cover of mystery ingredients is a perfect match for the rest of the menu. The sweet chili dipping sauce just adds a tangy element to the already tasty dish. The delicate Kimchee Pancake ($6.99) is wonderfully plated and has a texture that is slightly similar to mochi. The flavor is mild spicy and difficult to describe. It is, however, a pleasure to eat, and who would want anything else? One final recommendation is the new Chef Special Boneless Moa with green onions ($14.99). The chicken is crispy, juicy, sweet and topped with a sauce that Chef Q is keeping a secret. Can’t blame him. Every order is accompanied with a flavorful fish cake soup and freshly made kimchee. Delivery within the Makiki, Ala Moana, University and Ward Avenue areas cost $2.99 for orders of $35 or more.

... dining out ...
Yes, we did say late night. Kit n Kitchen is open until midnight Monday to Saturday. “We serve the full menu until midnight,” says owner Kit Yiu. “There are a lot of employees who work in Waikiki, and after their shift they can swing by Kit n Kitchen for something to eat.” Yiu also noted that Kit n Kitchen is new to the late-night market, but he noticed that there are a lot of customers who come in for appetizers and drinks. “Right around 8 or 9:30 at night, we have customers who come in and order pupus and wine. It’s a good hangout place for customers in the area. “We wanted to focus on lamb, and we get our lamb from New Zealand,” Yiu says of the spread. “In Hawaii there aren’t too many restaurants that do lamb.” Preparing lamb is tedious and time-consuming, but Kit n Kitchen has it down to an art and prepared three delectable dishes for Dining Out. Pepper Lamb ($16.95 two pieces, $20.95 three pieces, $24.94 four pieces) is prepared with herbs and a black pepper
sauce and served with mixed veggies. The establishment put a whole new spin on the creamy Italian rice dish with its Rosa Lamb Risotto ($14.95) that’s served with a savory risotto sauce, vegetables and rosemary.
But there’s more on the menu than just lamb, such as Red Wine Ox Tail Stew ($13.95). “We’ve been serving this dish since we opened 11 years ago,” Yiu adds. “It’s popular and people always come back for it. We

mixed French cuisine with a touch of Asian influence.” Sizzling Seafood Paella ($14.95) has Spanish influence, and the taste of saffron shines through the dish. This seafood rice dish is cooked over an open fire with garlic butter, which
gives it that smoky flavor. Other customer favorites include the late-night Kung Fu Soup Noodle with Shrimp Wanton ($8.95). Patrons can choose their soup, type of noodle and two toppings. And for the morning dishes, Steak and Eggs ($11.95) is at the top of the list and is served with chimichurri sauce and roasted potatoes. To begin your meal, Yiu recommends starting with Creamy Mushroom or Creamy Corn soups ($8.95). They are served in fresh-baked French bread bowls and come with a garden salad. Kit n Kitchen also serves up a tasty Eggs Benedict ($8.95) that Yiu admits is one of his personal favorites. It comes with a buttered English muffin, poached eggs, a thick ham steak, a hook of hollandaise and your choice of rice or potatoes. Kit n Kitchen also has the option for customers to substitute their starch for a garden salad or mixed vegetables — at no extra cost! Head down to Kit n Kitchen for good food in a great atmosphere in the heart of Honolulu.

“The chicken soaks up all the flavors of the sauce, so it’s very tasty as is, but it’s also served with ginger and spicy sauce on the side for added flavor,” Wong states, noting that the entree comes with seasoned rice and a bowl of hot chicken broth as well. And I must admit, giving in to anything ginger, I fell in love with the ginger sauce, a zesty concoction of just the right amounts of grated ginger and green onion. Tempura Temptation VO opefully regular readers know that the mission of Veg’nOut is to visit Island restaurants to find meat- and fish-free fare. If you’ve just started reading Dining Out (and we’re so glad you did), then now you know. It's a service to both the reader and our supporting restaurants, as there are times when you would like to join friends and/or family for lunch or dinner, but are hesitant because the eatery isn’t “vegetarian.” So we do the digging and you feast on the bounty — the perfect win-win scenario. It’s typically not easy to find something vegetarian on a Japanese restaurant menu, since fish is such a big part of the Japanese diet. But we don’t give up easily here. When perusing the menu at Hinone Mizunone, your eyes are met with numerous fish, shrimp, chicken and pork variations —

You know the drill with teishoku, but if you don’t, this popular eatery is the perfect place to learn. It’s a Japanese set meal, which means it comes with rice (kamadaki gohanstyle, prepared the old-fashioned way), miso soup (which traditionally is made with bonito, so non-fish eaters should inquire), two side dishes and pickles. Add the vegetable tempura to the set and you’ve got a full traditional Japanese feast. Not after a full meal? Located in Manoa — and filled with a tantalizing display of elegantly crafted desserts, pastries, pizzas and sandwiches — Fendu Boulangerie has the perfect treat for breakfast, lunch or a midday snack. Owner and chef Niel Koep explains that Fendu Boulangerie features Europeanstyle pastries, as well as Americaninspired dishes that are created in European fashion. “Our roots are French, but we have a lot of things that are American also,” he explains. While certain items such as Lemon Meringue Pie ($5.25), Carrot Cake ($4.25) and Pumpkin Bread ($4.75 for small; $8.75 for medium; $12.75 for large) are distinctly American fare, Fendu makes them in the European-style tradition. Kakaako Kitchen STORY BY KELLI SHIROMA PHOTOS BY NATHALIE WALKER
Since April 2009, Kakaako Kitchen started “Picnic on the Lanai,” a familystyle, picnic-like dinner on the restaurant’s patio in which the food comes out in big platters and conversations are not interrupted by buffet lines. “Picnic on the Lanai” is usually held on the last Sunday of the month, and reservations are taken in-person at the restaurant or by phone or e-mail (kakaakokitchen@gmail.com). The “Picnic on the Lanai” event for June, however, will be taking place on Father’s Day, June 17, as executive chef and restaurant owner Russell Siu prepares a special “Man’s Menu” that includes all of Dad’s favorites. “The Father’s Day ‘Picnic on the Lanai’ is more like a barbecue for Dad,” Siu says of the menu, which features dishes such as Char Siu Baby Back Ribs and Slow Roasted Furikake Salmon with Edamame Salad. “We have a different theme for
every ‘Picnic on the Lanai.’ If I do mushrooms, everything has mushrooms; last time it was Hawaiian-themed, so we had an upscale, Hawaiian-style menu.” “Picnic on the Lanai” features a picnic-like type of atmosphere, including long tables covered with tablecloths, paper plates and cutlery. The price for the event is $35 a person, free for keiki ages 5 and under, and $17.50 for keiki ages 6 to 12. At every “Picnic on the Lanai” event, BYOB beer and wine are welcome with no corkage fee. The Father’s Day “Picnic on the Lanai” starts at 6:30 p.m., but patrons usually start arriving earlier to uncork their bottles and get the party started. Kakaako Kitchen — which opened in 1995 on Waimanu Street and moved to its current location in Ward Centre in March 2000 — features upscale cuisine at moderate prices, using local, fresh ingredients, according to Siu. With the beginning of the summer and graduation season, he emphasizes the popularity of the eatery’s catering menu. “Our catering menu covers pretty much everything,” Siu states. “We also do a lot of buffets. Our prices are very
reasonable and I think the amount of food you get for the price is good.” Popular items on the restaurant’s catering menu include Sautéed Mahi with Lomi Tomato and Ginger Butter Sauce, Furikake Mahi with Soy Ginger Aioli, Sweet Chili Chicken with Sweet Chili Sauce, Shichimi Seared Chicken Breast with Soy-Citrus Sauce and Kalbi Ribs, or bone-in short ribs marinated with a house-made kalbi sauce. The eatery also receives numerous orders for its vast variety of bentos. Examples of these bentos are Myna Bird Bento ($8.75 per bento), comprising Five-Spice Shoyu

Kakaako Kitchen’s catering menu is often sought for weddings, first birthday parties, business events and home parties, according to restaurant manager Billy Bal. He encourages those planning to host parties or festivities — especially during this graduation season — to check out Kakaako Kitchen’s extensive catering menu. He notes that the eatery can be found on Facebook — if customers “like” Kakaako Kitchen’s Facebook page and show this, they can get a free treat at the restaurant. “Summertime is always big for events like graduations and birthday parties,” Bal says. “We have a busy time coming up and we’re posting a lot more than before (on our Facebook page) because social media is a huge thing now.”
