appy Sunday, Ono readers! Feeling a little crabby this morning? I am. But for all the right reasons and with a great big smile across my face. This week, it’s time to pay tribute to my all-time favorite crustacean — crab! Yes, I’m hooked on this particular catch. Come on, when you have a whole crab or a mountain of crab legs sitting before you, it’s pure and utter delight. And once you crack through the shell, working your way to the meat, which your teeth just sink into — it’s complete bliss! So, enough talk, let’s dive right into a sea of adventure as we explore the many different crab offerings at the following Ono, You Know establishments. It’s a crab invasion that’s worth sampling. One recommendation: Bring on the towelettes because if you’re as passionate about crab as I am, you’ll need them!

Creating the perfect cuisine, Kit and May Yiu, owners of Kit n Kitchen, blend exhilarating European fare with edible works of Asian art. Stop by on any given day during lunch or dinner and you’ll be bombarded by the number of hungry patrons taking in the renowned alluring entrees, many of which are prepared by May herself. The menu here suits even the most indecisive diner. Yet when it’s crab you’re after, the choice is simple. “We have a special dish that you have to pre-order a day in advance, and that’s Singapore Spicy Crab,” says Kit. One word: delicioso. Singapore Spicy Crab ($58.99) is a sight to behold — it definitely commands attention. Imagine a bed of flavorful long rice complete with a medley of vegetables, savory tomatoes, just the right amount of shrimp flavor, garlic and onion, topped with a magnificent whole Dungeness crab! Yes, it’s just as impressive as it sounds!

“It’s then seasoned even more with Singapore-style spicy sauce. However, you can request for mild or medium sauce as well,” Kit explains. “Singapore Spicy Crab is popular for many special occasions and it can generally feed up to four people.” So, take in this amazing dish, and who cares if your hands get messy, right? We all know when it comes to crab, the messier the better! Don’t forget, Kit n Kitchen added an Owl Menu to its repertoire, encouraging late-night dining from 9 p.m. to midnight, nightly. This new menu highlights many of the traditional menu’s offerings in addition to a collection of brand new dishes for your dining pleasure. Kit n Kitchen 1010 University Ave. Varsity Center 942.7622

MCCULLY SHOPPING CENTER

“To go along with the many ethnic groups that visit McCully Shopping Center, we have a variety of different establishments that focus on cuisine from all over the world. These restaurants meet the tastes of all palates,” says McCully Shopping Center’s marketing director Terri Hansen. “We like to call ourselves a ‘little Tokyo’ because we cater to both the local market and the visitor market respectively,” she adds. “We have visitors from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Asia, etc. The Convention Center also is nearby, so we see a lot of business clientele from across the globe. We get those individuals who work in Waikiki as well, and we have a great international market comprised of students who attend University of Hawaii, Todai University or HPU. McCully Shopping Center is very conveniently located.” So whether you’re stirring up an appetite for Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, fast food or local grinds, McCully Shopping Center never disappoints. Also, delight your sweet tooth with an exotic blend of refreshing smoothies, bub-

ble tea drinks and alluring “snow ice” desserts. To submerge ourselves in the eclectic array of dining options that span all borders, Dining Out eagerly stopped in on a few of the restaurants featured in “A World of Cuisines,” including Curry House Coco Ichibanya, Fook Yuen Chinese Seafood Restaurant, Hot Pot Heaven and Regal Diner. Other participating restaurants include Pho 777 Vietnamese Restaurant, Bistro A Un, Phuket Thai, Taco Bell/Pizza Hut, Yotteko-Ya, Coffee or Tea? and Snow Factory. “During our event we just encourage you to come and dine at our shopping center and experience the different cuisines that we do have,” Hansen says. “This month, we expect to see a nice increase of patrons. We have a steady clientele here, but we want to expand it, so those who don’t usually come out to McCully Shopping Center can take part in all the fun.” Fook Yuen, a long-standing eatery in McCully Shopping Center has been in existence for 21 years and highlights premier, authentic

Curry House Coco Ichibanya is another longtime favorite among diners, and is known for its zesty Japanese curry selections, boasting most-alluring entrees of Chicken Cutlet Curry with Spinach and Cheese ($9.58) and Chicken Cutlet Curry with Corn ($7.54), among others. A relatively newer eatery to grace McCully Shopping Center is Hot Pot Heaven, your go-to hot spot for all of your hot pot cravings. With various broths and more than 80 items to choose from, it’s simple to personalize any meal to your liking. “The most requested broths are Thai ($8.99), Seafood ($9.99) and Mushroom ($9.99),” Hansen explains, adding that the top hot pot ingredients comprise of beef, pork, shrimp wonton, Chinese cabbage, enoki mushrooms, choi sum, cab-

bage wrap, shrimp and pumpkin. Regal Diner fans also will be happy to note that Regal Bakery has recently been added to the ever-popular establishment. According to Hansen, the bakery has been open for about a month now and features sweet nothings galore. Cake doughnuts, original doughnuts and specialty doughnuts — they have it all. “It’s truly a melting pot of flavors that we’re happy to be able to showcase through ‘A World of Cuisines,’” Hansen shares. “And while dining you can enter-to-win a Napa Valley getaway! “To enter, simply drop off your entry form at any participating merchant. For additional chances to win and earn Hawaiian Miles, attach your receipt dated July1-31 from any of our merchants along with an additional entry form and your Hawaiian Miles number,” she explains. 8

The lucky winner will explore two of Napa’s most historic features — the vintage rail cars of the Wine Train and The Napa River Inn and Historic Napa Mill, a world-class urban destination in the heart of California’s beautiful wine country — for a span of three days and two nights. “Napa is known for its wine and extraordinary cuisine, so we thought it would be perfect to include in ‘A World of Cuisines’ Hansen adds. “McCully Shopping Center is very convenient, parking is always free and we also have ample parking in the basement. “If you’re going out night clubbing in Waikiki, you can stop in for a bite, if you’re meeting with clients you can come here, and it takes you away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. We also are quick and inexpensive. All of our restaurants are within your means and don’t gouge your pocketbook,” Hansen says with a smile.

30 years of experience in the industry to their latest endeavor. Such knowledge and skill has resulted in quick, affordable meals that maintain their quality and freshness. Since opening May 8, the cozy local spot has garnered attention for its satisfying Japanese bentos and mixed plates, but Leung says there’s a whole menu of exceptional Chinese-inspired a la carte items to choose from as well. “One of our strongest points is actually our a la carte items,” he says. Shrimp with Chili Sauce ($10.95) is one the friendly owner recommends right off the bat. This velvety dish gets its hint of spice from a chili sauce that marries well with the slightly sweet tomato sauce that lusciously coats the shrimp. According to Leung, it’s great for takeout orders because it will keep fresh for hours. While you’re at it, try the a la carte menu’s Kung Pao Chicken ($7.95), which offers a spicy combination of chicken, bell peppers, dried chili pepper and peanuts tossed in a flavorful, yet light sauce. “We have a really good

house sauce,” explains Leung. “Every time you come in, you’re going to have the same taste.” Both the Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp with Chili Sauce have been in the owner’s repertoire for 20 years. After sampling such fresh Chinese fare, you’ll want to share it at your next gathering. No problem, since all of the restaurant’s a la carte items are available in party tray sizes for catering. You can share the Regular ($22) tray among 12 people or more, while the Large ($32) is good for at least 20. Before you go, be sure to try some of Asian Mix’s Japanese and local fare as well. Misoyaki Butterfish ($8.95) — the best-selling bento — is based on a recipe that manager/chef Douglas Shirai has been cooking up since 1984. “We filet it — we cut our own portions, and the miso sauce … is kind of a secret,” he says with a chuckle. Nothing accompanies the melt-inyour-mouth bento better than a side of creamy Macaroni Potato Salad ($1.75), made fresh daily. So get into the mix for a fresh burst of familiar flavors.

top by Dean’s Drive Inn during lunch, and you’ll most likely see a line going out the door, which is a good indication of what you can expect at this popular Kaneohe eatery. And don’t worry, the line moves fast, and the food is oh, so worth waiting for. 2

As a Windward resident myself, I’ve been a fan from when it first opened six years ago. The tasty, local-style, gourmet plate lunches are recipes of chef/owner Dean Mishima, who has three decades of experience in the restaurant business. Born and raised in Kaneohe, Mishima grew up eating a lot of the food he serves today. It was always his dream to start his own restaurant, so after 19 years as executive chef for Liberty House, he decided to pursue it. (Now that I think about it, as a kid my mom often took us to eat at the original Gazebo at Liberty House in Ala Moana Center and I remember the food being really good.) At Dean’s, Ahi Cakes ($9.45 mini and $11.45 regular) and Teriyaki Beef Steak ($9.45 mini and $11.45 regular) are the most popular menu items. There also

is a combo of the two called Surf & Turf ($11.95). The ahi cake is surprisingly moist, and consists of round onion, green onion, water chestnut and egg, and is drizzled with a sweet aioli sauce. The teriyaki beef steak is nicely marinated in a homemade teri sauce, and then charbroiled, cut up into thick pieces and topped with a teri glaze. All regular plates include white or brown rice, and a choice of soup, tossed salad or macaroni salad.

There also are burgers, sandwiches, a vegetarian menu, and daily specials often with a variety of fresh island fish dishes such as shutome, ono and ahi belly. When you order, beware of the display of cornbread and desserts on the counter that are too hard to resist. Add a friendly staff to the mix, including Mishima’s wife Doreen at the register, and you’ll definitely be hooked.

From experience, it’s good to call beforehand to make sure they’re open as the restaurant will sometimes close for catering events. And if you can wait, step in after 1:30 p.m. to skip out on the lunch rush.

Nothing to beef about VO n Vietnam, many people enjoy a bowl of pho for breakfast, slurping the warm, satisfying soup before beginning their day. Of course, pho is delicious any time of day — lunchtime, dinnertime or even as an evening snack. But the one thing that may make non-meat eaters hoof it right past a pho shop is that it is typically made with beef broth, so unless the eatery is willing to accommodate, you’re out of luck. Enter Saigon Cuisine. “We want everybody to eat what

they like,” says Jennifer Tran, who owns the restaurant with husband Taylor. And when it comes to pho, customers have three options: beef, chicken or vegetable broth. “Just ask for vegetarian only,” she adds. And that’s no bum steer. Vegetable Pho ($6.95 medium, $7.50 large) is filled to the brim with tofu, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, white and green onions all swimming in a healthy vegetable broth. “There’s no meat at all,” assures Tran, who also recommends Saigon Cuisine’s Lemongrass Tofu Vermicelli ($7.50). The dish is comprised of dry vermicelli along with tofu marinated in fragrant lemongrass and turnip, lending it an appetizing yellow hue and mellow flavor. “It’s a delicious taste for vegetarians,”

Well, much credit goes to the many chefs, owners and managers who work diligently day in and day out to make sure Hawaii’s diners have a top-notch dining experience. he month of July brings about great things that are happening at Zippy’s locations nearest you, Dining Out readers. Recently, Zippy’s Restaurants was voted “Hawaii’s Best” in the Honolulu StarAdvertiser’s “Hawaii’s Best” awards for Best Bento, Best Late-Night Eatery and Best Bakery, and the establishment wants to celebrate with its patrons by providing special July offers as a “thank you.”

And with prestigious awards such as these, it’s no wonder that Zippy’s Restaurants has been labeled Hawaii’s restaurant of choice. “We want to thank Hawaii for their patronage and supporting us through the years and for voting us the best,” says marketing manager Jeanine Mamiya-Kalahiki. In honor of winning Best Bento, the famous Zip Pac is available at a special price ($7.99 fast food, $8.99 restaurant). It includes island favorites such as golden fried chicken, teriyaki beef, breaded fish, Spam and takuan, all over a bed of furikake-sprinkled rice. The Zip Pac is an island favorite that’s perfect for anyone who needs a delicious meal on the go if you’re heading to the beach to soak up that summer sun. Zippy’s also has combined two amazing meals into one mixed plate. Spaghetti and Chicken Mixed Plate ($5.99 fast food, $6.99 restaurant) is a junction of the restaurant’s most popular items. Those with a serious sweet tooth need not worry, as Napoleon’s Bakery also is joining in on the special offer promotion. Get your palates ready for Napple flavors of apple, cherry, coconut, blueberry cream cheese and chocolate, and Brownie concoctions of whole wheat, cocoa fudge with nuts and double cocoa fudge without nuts. For being voted Best Bakery, there is a buythree-get-one-free deal on Napples ($1.75 each) and Brownies ($2.05 each). Available in the dine-in restaurant only are two new salads that will satisfy the savory and sweet desires of your palate. Korean Chicken Salad ($9.25) is served with Zippy’s house dressing and comes with Zippy’s famous Korean fried chicken pieces, Nalo Zip greens, tomato wedges and cucumber medallions.

According to Mamiya-Kalahiki, Zippy’s comes up with seasonal salads for customers to enjoy. “Korean chicken is one of our good sellers, so we thought how about putting it in a salad.” If you’re feeling something lighter, there also is a Fresh Strawberry Salad ($6.95), which includes fresh bite-sized strawberry slices atop Nalo Zip greens, sliced almonds and a special sweet vinaigrette dressing. Fresh Strawberry Salad has been on the menu before as a healthier, lighter option, and it got such a great response that Zippy’s decided to bring it back. “It’s refreshing, and it’s a unique mix of ingredients,” Mamiya-Kalahiki says. Also available in Zippy’s dine-in restaurants is the breakfast menu served 24 hours a day — and yes, this includes everything from hotcakes to French toast and waffles. To celebrate this breakfast menu extension, Zippy’s introduces its new Chicken and Waffles ($8.75). You get the best of both worlds: a hearty piece of fried chicken paired with a Belgian waffle. Las Vegas has been called the ninth island in the Hawaiian chain, and because locals find this destination so appealing, Zippy’s Restaurants also is giving away a free trip for two each week in July – four trips in all. Not to worry though, even if you don’t win the trip, there’s still a consolation prize of a month’s supply of Zip Pacs or Napples. “We know our residents really like that,” Mamiya-Kalahiki adds. “They love Vegas.” Zippy’s Restaurants indeed knows its customers well, and the establishment continues to strive to provide its patrons with a memorable dining experiences — and comfort food, of course.

pork. This is our version with a Hawaiian twist with the pineapple braise,” says Bryce Fujimoto, manager and grandson of Shiro Matsuo. Shiro’s Saimin was built from the ground up by Mistah Saimin who always had a desire to work for himself. Although Shiro may be gone, his delightful and comical personality can be seen throughout all three restaurants (Waipahu, Waimalu and Ewa Beach), from his poems on the walls to his quirky messages within the menu. One warming poem Shiro created for his guests reads, “The place with a song in its heart and dedicated to the proposition that the hard working people must be taken care of with invigorating, nourishing, soulsifying food that is not too skimpy, plenty tasty and geared to the pocketbook.” Well said, Mistah Saimin!

hiro’s Saimin Haven has given what used to be a simple noodle dish personality. Franz “Shiro” Matsuo or Mistah Saimin, who died recently at age 93, glamorized saimin, making it artful and personalized. Shiro’s Saimin is consistent in its use of ingredients, making sure freshness is key. Even with dozens of affordable and unique saimin options on the menu, Shiro’s chefs reach out to customize various dishes outside of saimin. IHOP Unveils New Menu with an Exciting Change

T

his week is a big week for International House Of Pancakes Restaurant, which has four locations on Oahu — Pearl City, Kaneohe and two in Waikiki — and one on the Big Island. Not only has the restaurant’s Kuhio location recently reopened with delightful new décor, but all of the locations also are rolling out some menu changes starting tomorrow. But not to worry, pancake lovers. That certainly doesn’t pose any risk to IHOP’s already incredibly varied and vast menu that includes everything from classic, breakfast foods to hearty dinners and decadent desserts. Rather, the new menu simply makes one crucial change that all customers are certainly going to love, no matter what kind of food you’re after: Prices are getting lower. Yes, you did read that correctly. “The menu stays the same, but the prices drop significantly,” says director of operations Jason Aldaba. A bold move in any economy — let alone this one — IHOP’s decision to lower its prices stems from a love for its customers. “We just thought that a lot of people are looking for value, and there is a lot of choices when dining out. So we looked at our menu pricing and decided that it’s time for a change, so we lowered a lot of our prices throughout the menu,” Aldaba says. “We have a variety of everything. IHOP is a national staple when it comes to breakfast,” Aldaba says. “But we offer way more other than breakfast … Anything you like would be on our menu.” Some popular menu items include

Spinach and Mushroom Omelette ($14.99) and Big Steak Omelette ($15.59), which includes tender strips of steak, hash browns, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and Cheddar cheese with salsa. Another customer favorite is Chicken and Waffles ($8). And if you’re going to IHOP, trying the pancakes are a necessity. Aldaba says that a popular option is Pick-A-Pancake Combo ($11.75), which gives you a choice among a wide array

he IHOP restaurants that you find here in the Islands are a part of a larger chain that first started in California more than 50 years ago. Local owners Sarah and Vince Espino brought IHOP to Hawaii in 2006, when they opened the Kuhio location. With its wide variety of breakfast foods — including its famous, fluffy buttermilk pancakes — along with sandwiches, soups and more, IHOP’s popularity soon caught on. The owners expanded their restaurant to include five locations throughout the state. Although IHOP is derived from a larger international chain, it features a lot of local flavors, too. IHOP strives to buy local as much as possible, and often uses local eggs and produce in its dishes. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Kuhio location unveiled its renovations — brand new décor in the dining room. “The décor and everything in the restaurant is different,” says director of operations Jason Aldaba. “The paint, the chairs, the carpet are all new.” Customers will feel at ease in the comfortable, homelike dining experience that IHOP has created. And starting July 9, there is a new reason to bring your entire family to IHOP. Beginning that day, IHOP will kick off its Kids Eat Free promotion. “That will be in the afternoons,” Aldaba explains, “but we might extend it as we move forward.”

of IHOP’s tasty pancakes, including Original Buttermilk, Chocolate Chocolate Chip and Double Blueberry. If you’re looking for something other than breakfast food, IHOP has that covered as well. One tasty option for lunch or dinner is Tuscan Chicken Griller ($11.99), which features grilled chicken with melted Provolone cheese, oven1 roasted tomatoes, lettuce and sun-dried tomato pesto. Also coming up this week, in honor of Fourth of July, IHOP is offering a special Red, White and Blue Ultimate 2

Combo ($9.99), which includes hash browns, two eggs, two pieces of meat and two pancakes that are topped with strawberries, whipped cream and blueberries. “Normally every year we do the Red, White and Blue Ultimate Combo just for Fourth of July to show our appreciation,” says Aldaba. And the combo — as well as any of IHOP’s other menu items — certainly is something that the customers will appreciate. Contact Christina O’Connor at diningout@staradvertiser.com 3

In life people make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. How you deal or react to your foul ups is the key. If you own up to them, You are able to learn, adapt and grow as a person. Deny, make excuses or point fingers and you will remain the same. Don’t make yourself the victim or play the blame game. It’s so lame. Sincerely, Bryce “Saimin Jr.”

Arroz De Marisco ($17)

Carne De Poreo Adega ($18)

Vinho D'alhos ($19)

O

n Feb. 3, Adega Portuguesa Restaurant & Bar —celebrating both Portuguese and Brazilian cuisine — opened its doors in the heart of Chinatown. Now, about six months later, the eatery is commemorating its halfyear anniversary with a special promotion. “On July 6 — the first Friday of the month — we’re going to give away 6,000 malasadas from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” says restaurant owner Trigo da Silva. When da Silva first came to Oahu in 2007, he noticed that there were few Portuguese restaurants on the island. After meeting local Portuguese — who were just as enthusiastic about their culture and heritage as he was — da Silva decided to open Adega Portuguesa, in order to share the Portuguese culture with Hawaii. “We’re just trying to show everybody our culture — our food, music and dance,” he says. Adega Portuguesa prides itself in providing customers with authentic Portuguese cuisine bursting with flavor. Some of the eatery’s most popular dishes include Arroz De Marisco ($17) — a seafood medley pan-simmered with peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes, white wine and rice — and Vinho D’alhos ($19), pork loin marinated in vinegargarlic sauce and served with fried potatoes and sautéed mixed vegetables. Other restaurant specialties include Carne de Porco Adega ($18) — a traditional Portuguese dish comprising pork and clams with fried potatoes, cilantro and meat sauce — Caldo Verde ($5), or

Chef Ruben Oliveira and Adega owner Trigo da Silva

Portuguese national soup composed of potatoes, onions, kale and chouriço sausage, as well as the traditional Portuguese Bean Soup ($6). Da Silva notes that the eatery is especially popular for its Bacalhau (codfish). “We have several varieties of Bacalhau dishes; one of the most popular is our Bacalhau à Adega ($22) — a boneless fillet of codfish topped with onions, red peppers and garlic, and

served with roasted red potatoes and sautéed mixed vegetables,” he says. “We also have Bacalhau à Braz ($22), a Northern Portuguese dish consisting of codfish, crispy potato strips, scrambled eggs, garlic onions and parsley. Another customer favorite is Bitoque ($19), locally known as the Loco Moco, but we make it authentic with a traditional, Portuguese-style New York Strip steak (Angus), topped with brown gravy and a fried egg.”

Adega’s Happy Hour Specials are available daily from 3 to 6 p.m. Available pupus include Portuguese Salsicha ($8), or Portuguese sausage; Popcorn Shrimp ($6); Chicharróns ($4), or fried pork rinds; and Picadinho Vinho D’alhos ($8). Beer and other drinks are available for $3$4. Besides the Happy Hour Specials, da Silva points out that customers can present the restaurant’s coupon in Dining Out to receive additional discounts. Customers can receive 15 percent off any menu entrée (coupon must be present), and seniors (ages 65 and over) can receive a 15 percent discount on the entire menu. The authentic Portuguese food is only one component of the eatery. Da Silva teaches a Portuguese language class at the eatery every Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. for those who want to learn to speak Portuguese. Live Portuguese music is performed during weekends and dance classes are held on Sundays. Live music includes Fado, Boso Nova, Samba and jazz. “Once a month, I have Fado singers come from the Mainland (to perform here),” notes da Silva. He encourages customers to “friend” Adega Portuguesa on the eatery’s Facebook page, in order to get updates regarding live music and other restaurant news. Adega Portuguesa is the busiest during the weekends, da Silva says, and he emphasizes the need to make reservations. “If you want to have dinner (here) on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, you must call for reservations,” he states.
