to Talk About ure, it’s being said that Selena Gomez has had her fill of Justin Bieber considering the recent breakup of this young Hollywood couple, but that’s deinitely not the case when it comes to me and food. This might sound silly, but if food was a person, I know that we’d be a match made in heaven! And with Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s guaranteed that the holiday favorites and all the fixings such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, will be at the forefront of everyone’s minds. But believe me, the consumption of all this hearty cuisine may come as a shock to your body, so to prepare for the feast(s) ahead, this week, I decided it would be the perfect time to stuff myself silly with foods that are, well, stuffy in a good way. Let’s see … crab stuffed mahi mahi, bacon-wrapped shrimp and scallops, stuffed salmon — I know you’re hungry! So, without further ado, let the eating frenzies begin as I fill up on the best “stuffed” dishes at the following Ono, You Know establishments. Who knows? One of these dishes may just be Selena’s or the Biebs’ perfect cure for a broken heart.

S

Sam Choy’s Breakfast, Lunch & Crab Celebrity chef Sam Choy reigns as the king of local favorites, and here at Sam Choy’s Breakfast, Lunch & Crab diners

are presented with a royal spread, to say the least. But let’s not get stuffy here, unless it’s Pan Roasted Salmon that we’re talking about. Priced at $16.95, this lunch-only entree capitalizes on great taste, as the roasted salmon features a panko garlic crust exterior stuffed with a blend of crab meat, spinach, mayo and seasonings. The meat is melt-in-your-mouth tender served with a shiitake mushroom cream sauce and then topped with a sweet teriyaki drizzle. “The shiitake mushroom cream sauce is our signature sauce that Sam is famous for,” says general manager Jeffrey Gaspar. “This specific dish has been on our menu for about two years and our customers seem to really enjoy it.” Pan Roasted Salmon is filling on its own, but it’s also paired with a mound of white rice with furikake and a vegetable medley to complete the meal. t’s a sweet thing at Napoleon's Bakery, and there’s no better time of year than Thanksgiving to partake in slice after slice of decadent pies and melt-in-your-mouth cakes. Will you soon be making the rounds at numerous holiday parties? Well, Napoleon’s sinful delights are the perfect date.

“Each month we like to feature a couple new items, and since it’s November, it only makes sense to feature none other than pumpkin (items) and, of course, we go all out with our selection because of the holidays,” says Jay Crisologo, creative specialist for Napoleon’s Bakery. “This year we brought back all of our pumpkin favorites and our regular assortment as well.” Among these Thanksgiving specialties are Pumpkin Chiffon Pie ($9.95*) and Pumpkin Coffee Cake Square ($1.65* each). Pumpkin Chiffon Pie is a twist on the traditional pumpkin pie and features a light, creamy and smooth texture of a chiffon pie. As for Pumpkin Coffee Cake Square, this morsel of heaven presents patrons with a moist pumpkin cake striped with cream cheese filling and streusel crumbs. And whether you’re counting carbs or watching your weight or sugar intake — you’re in luck — desserts with less or no sugar also are available especially for you. Select from guilt-free options such as Pumpkin Pie with Equal Sweetener and

Pumpkin Delite Cake. According to Crisologo, Pumpkin Pie with Equal Sweetener ($10.95*) is a baked pumpkin pie made with a sugarfree crust. The only added sugar is found in the whipped cream topping. And there’s a lot to dish about when it comes to Napoleon’s Bakery Pumpkin Delite Cake ($14.35*), a 6-inch cake flavored with pumpkin and spice, and layered with sugarfree vanilla pudding, then iced with a cinnamon-flavored sugarfree vanilla whipped topping. “During the holiday season many want to enjoy the best part of the meal — desserts — but can’t because they are concerned about their sugar intake, so here at Napoleon’s we try to let them have in on the fun with sugarfree options available especially for them,” explains Crisologo, noting that Napoleon’s Thanksgiving specials are available at all Oahu Napoleon’s Bakery locations, however, Napoleon’s Bakery Kahului is only offering Pumpkin Chiffon Pie, regular baked Pumpkin Pie and Pumpkin Coffee Cake Square.

Of course, you don’t have to be diabetic or limiting your sugar intake to enjoy these tasty treats, but the fact that it’s better for you, Crisologo says, is just icing on the cake. “Production greatly increases during the holidays,” he adds. “Napoleon’s Bakery has a large assortment of delicacies to choose from. Some people may have forgotten about our Haupia Chocolate Cake ($14.35*). It was a featured item last year and it was a hot commodity, so we decided to include it as part of our everyday selection.” Other bakery classics include Chantilly Cake ($16.95*), Peach Bavarian Cake ($14.35*), Dream Cake ($15.75*) and the establishment’s best-seller Dobash Cake ($14.35*). “All of our cakes are very affordable and we have a nice

variety to choose from. We also serve a nice selection of pies such as custard, pumpkin, apple, banana cream, chocolate cream, lemon meringue and Jell-O cream pie,” says Crisologo. “Our pumpkin pie recipe has been the same since we opened our doors back in 1983.” Fitting with the season, Pumpkin ($8.50*) and Custard ($8.50*) top the list of most sought-after pies. Customers just can’t seem to get enough of these sweet nothings. “Our baked goods are very affordable. We use the freshest ingredients and the presentation is always very nice,” he confirms. So, what is it that makes Napoleon’s Bakery stand out from the rest? According to Crisologo, it’s all about convenience. “We have so many locations scattered across the island. Sometimes you may be in a rush to get a cake or pie for a party, and you can come here and pick up a homemade item in minutes.” *Prices may vary at locations.

urikake chicken ($8) is one of the most popular items on the menu, says Jun Tsuchiya, who owns Sakura Restaurant with his brother, chef Ryo Tsuchiya. It’s no wonder. The chicken is a little sweet and, thanks to its preparation, is very juicy. Tsuchiya begins by marinating the chicken in a mochiko sauce before deep frying the tender pieces. way to introduce the rest of Sakura’s mix of local and Japanese favorites. Ahi Carpaccio ($13.50) is another good-to-go item. Sashimi-grade ahi is sliced thin, topped with a dark balsamic vinaigrette, and served with shredded onion, daikon and carrots. It’s buttery ahi with the slight snap of a good vinaigrette — tasty. My personal favorite is Miso Tofu ($8), a crispy, creamy appetizer that looks

more like a dessert than something with which you begin your meal. Soft Japanese tofu is deepfried until crunchy then coated with Sakura’s special miso sauce and baked. Cutting into the 4 two large pieces of tofu reveals the shiny interior that nearly sparkles against the darkened exterior. No, it’s not a dessert, but the slight sweetness of the miso will make you think it is.

Tsuchiya is a bit secretive in the preparation of the tender strips of pork, but he will share is that the ribs are boiled, marinated in a soy, ginger, teriyaki-based sauce and grilled to ensure its tender goodness. Wafu Ribeye is 12 ounces of Angus beef that is lightly seasoned and grilled to order, as any good piece of meat should be. Served with shredded daikon with fried potatoes and broccoli on the side, it’s a crowd pleaser. 5

We were also giving away a free beach bag to the first 100 people who ordered at least $19.74, in honor of our opening year.” Most importantly, the celebration featured a renowned menu of morning classics, including items that have been around since the beginning. “The Early Riser ($7.95) was always one of the most popular dishes from the original 1974 menu,” explains Skedeleski. During the

he first time you enter Eggs ‘n Things’ brand-new location, you’ll immediately sense excitement in the air. It’s evident in the sound of utensils clinking together as patrons delve into breakfast delights, as well as the sight of hardworking employees, whose friendly spirits have already added character to the restaurant’s crisp yellow walls just waiting to be broken in. You’ll also take pleasure in the enticingly sweet whiff of fresh pancake batter that swirls about the eatery daily; it’s the same sensational scent locals and tourists have craved since the original Eggs ‘n Things opened in Waikiki in 1974. And after ordering, feel free to tempt your taste buds even further by watching your food cook on an open grill. Grilled over kiawe wood, each protein is infused with a unique smoky flavor. “It’s just a good experience,” shares director of restaurant operations Patrick Comer. “We’re very personable; what you see is what you get.” Some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes feature meat of the sea: fresh fish. All fish dishes come in generous 6-ounce portions, and the restaurant never uses frozen fish. Among its most popular options is Garlic Ahi ($12.99). The ahi, cut into thick steak slices, is marinated in the restaurant’s proprietary garlic sauce before it is grilled to your preference. A new special that just made its

debut recently is Prime Rib Special ($11.99). This 8-ounce cut of 30-day aged meat is marked on the grill for added smokiness from the kiawe wood, and slow-roasted in Good to Grill’s house seasoning. All protein dishes are served with two sides, which include white rice, brown rice, garlic mash potatoes, fries, house-made potato salad, baby greens with a balsamic vinaigrette or sauteed veggies. Expect to indulge in a fine-dining meal without the price tag, and surrounded by a comfortable atmosphere. “Our motto is fine-dining quality without the fine-dining prices,” says Comer. 1 Fresh Garlic Ahi ($10.99) 2 Prime Rib (10-ounce $14.99, 14-ounce $17.99) Lawrence Tabudlo photos

et ready for a journey of a lifetime — a culinary journey, that is — at Five Star International Buffet. In a class of its very own, Five Star International Buffet shines new light on your traditional all-youcan-eat buffet concept as it presents you with a delectable spread of avant-garde international cuisine. The restaurant was first conceived in Hokkaido, Japan, in 2003, and today you’ll come across three additional locations in Hokkaido and one exclusively tucked away on the third level of Building C at Royal Hawaiian Center in the heart of Waikiki. As the first and only location outside of Japan, the company’s founder Noriyuki Kato couldn’t wait to share his revolutionary buffet concept with locals and visitors alike right here in our island home. And, of course, Dining Out couldn’t imagine a better person to bring along on this incredible Dining with the Stars culinary journey than Denby Dung. Many

may recognize her as the TV host of The Pet Hui on OC-12 and Miss Hawaii 2001, but she also serves as a flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines, so it seemed perfectly fitting to take this opportunity to twist things up and explore the globe foodie-style. “I’ve worked for Hawaiian Airlines for two years now and have been able to travel to many places including Sydney, Australia, Japan and Las Vegas, to name a few. Hawaiian Airlines has four different routes to Japan and I recently returned from Sapporo. But this is my first time eating here at Five Star International Buffet,” Dung says. At what seemed like an endless buffet line, Dung filled her plate with international fare ranging from Japanese to French, Italian, Hawaiian and more. The lunch buffet is priced at $19.99 per person and the dinner buffet costs $48. Five Star Enterprises vice president Victoria Wah Hin and the rest of the staff also presented our star with exquisite

platters of food, which featured items from the dinner buffet. “I’m a big fan of buffets and I love to try a little bit of everything, or as I did here ... a lot of everything,” Dung says with a laugh. “The food here is delicious. I loved the Loco Moco, Kakuni Pork and Rosemary Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf.” The spread fit for a queen also consisted of Swai Mousse with a Red Pepper Sauce, Lobster Tail with a Sweet Asian Sauce and Fried Onions, Short Ribs with Black Pepper Demi Glaze and Garlic, Dynamite Scallops, Crab Legs, Shrimp Tempura, Ahi and Salmon Nigiri and more. And things got even sweeter with elaborate dessert options including New York Cheesecake, Tiramisu and Fruit Roll Cake. “What makes us unique is that we don’t use chafing dishes. We present our food on big platters and all buffet items are served in smaller portions,” Wah Hin says. “We constantly replenish everything in the buffet line to make

sure that it’s fresh.” “I’m already thinking of a special occasion so that I can bring my family here,” Dung adds. You may wonder how Dung maintains her trim figure as she says she hardly works out. Incomprehensible, we know. Yet, once you are in the presence of her bubbly personality and contagious smile, you sit and talk for a bit and soon realize how incredibly busy she is, and it all seems to make sense. You also can add model, actress, composer and musician to

her long list of professions. “I’ve been a musician in The Royal Hawaiian Band for 13 years. I play the clarinet and sometimes saxophone, as well as emcee at different events,” shares Dung, who also recently appeared in Hawaii Five-0 as a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant. On top of that, she’s performed in numerous Diamond Head Theatre musical productions, such as You Somebody, Flower Drum Song and The Producers. Need your dose of Denby? Well, you can catch her hosting The Pet Hui Sundays at 8:30 p.m. and all throughout the week on OC-12 where she hopes to make a difference in the lives of many animals. “I love animals, and it’s so rewarding when they actually find a home. These rescue animals really deserve a forever home and a family of their own,” says Dung, who together with her family has adopted five rescue dogs of her very own.

KITCHEN INSIDER ver wonder what goes on behind the scenes at your favorite restaurant? Well, much credit goes to the many chefs, owners and managers who work diligently day in and day out to make sure Hawaii’s diners have a top-notch dining experience. Be ready for the generous portion of food, which includes snow crab, Manila clams, shrimp, mussel, corn and fried noodles; and it can feed at least two people. And a non-seafood dish that has become a signature of Panda Cuisine is Crispy Char Siu ($11.99). For those seeking a late-night meal, also known as siu yeh in Cantonese and a cultural tradition of the Chinese, there’s a late-

night dinner menu from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. As for happy hour, at Panda Cuisine, it takes place all day and night, with $2 draft beers including Tsingtao, Heineken, Bud Light, Kirin, Budweiser and Coors Light. In less than a year, word about Panda Cuisine’s tasty seafood offerings has spread quickly among seafood lovers here and around the world. Even the legendary Bob Chinn of Bob Chinn’s Crab House in Chicago was seen dining at Panda Cuisine the other week. “We are a Chinese restaurant specializing in seafood,” explains John Liang, who coowns the restaurant with Chris Lin. “When you walk in, you can see all the live seafood in the fish tanks and you pick the one you want.” The recipes are from Liang, who also co-owns Crab City in Kaimuki, and has more than 15 years of experience in the restaurant business. rom the bright red-and-white décor and outlandish wall decorations to the K-Pop music videos playing continuously on one of the walls, Red House in Honolulu makes an eye-catching first impression as the eatery continues its mission to bring a “new generation of Korean food” to the Islands.

Owner Justin Chun conceived the fusion restaurant ,located conveniently on Keeaumoku Street, that integrates an exciting, upbeat atmosphere featuring sparkling red booths and special bucket-style chairs from Korea with the dining experience, which features menu items with noticeable Korean influences paired with complementary cooking and preparation styles from all over the globe. “In Korea, there are a lot of restaurants with this type of atmosphere,” explains Chun. “Here in Hawaii, there aren’t any Korean fusion restaurants—they are all traditional. So, I wanted to start a fusion restaurant, and only a few of the dishes on the menu are traditional.” Red House recently added a new menu to supplement its current selection of favorites. Customers are invited to try the

Black Pasta and Red Pasta ($12.99 each), which feature pasta with a creamy black bean sauce and stir-fried meat, and a special Red House spicy pasta with a creamy Korean Chili paste sauce, respectively.

“If you look at our Black Pasta, it includes black bean, which is really popular in Korea and has been for a long time,” Chun says. “What we did was make a pasta out of it, so it’s creamier. It’s not necessarily blending specific cultures or influences, but more so mixing in different aspects.” For example, Red House offers a pizza that is composed of crushed rice topped with cheese and bulgogi beef — the ultimate fusion of the Korean marinated beef with a traditional Italian favorite. The bulgogi beef also can be found in wraps that incorporate the tasty meat in a fun finger food. Also appearing on the new menu is a unique take on traditional side dishes offered at Korean restaurants. Instead of serving the sides in bowls, Red House offers K-Maki ($9.99 for three selections,

$19.99 for all seven) that include Mayo Tuna, Spam, Bulgogi, Bibimbob, Garlic Bacon, Kimchi Tuna and Spicy Avocado wrapped in bitesized, pupu-style sushi rolls. The KMaki also are available as part of some new lunch combo specials offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., which incorporate various noodle, chicken and beef, and side order selections as well. Customers also rave about Red House’s Special Galbi ($14.99 for half order, $23.99 for full order), which includes marinated short ribs with roasted garlic and pumpkin served on a piping hot stone. Another favorite is Chef’s Special Boneless Moa ($14.99 for half order, $23.99 for full order), Red House’s take on fried chicken. The juicy, tender boneless meat is fried to provide a crispy crunch, and served

with a house soy sauce. “I wanted to create a clean atmosphere where people can enjoy Korean fusion food,” says Chun. “Usually people have a stereotype of Korean restaurants of them being dark and dirty, and everything’s always busy. We wanted to offer a more relaxed, welcoming environment.” Starting tomorrow, Red House will stay open for an additional hour until 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Chun notes that the eatery features a special late-night menu full of food and drink specials available from 8:30 to 11 p.m. on the aforementioned days. The restaurant is open until midnight Friday and Saturday, and on those nights from 9 p.m. to midnight, the special menu also is available to help diners end the evening on the right note.

t seems that Chinese restaurants get something of a bad rap these days. But at Canton Seafood, it’s clear from the minute you walk in the door that it’s time to do away with any preconceived notions. Here at Canton Seafood, you get tasty, quality food within an elegant, yet welcoming and comfortable dining room. Canton Seafood serves up traditional, authentic eats in the Canton- and Hong Kong-style — and it has a regular customer base to vouch for its authenticity. “A lot of Chinese people especially

love our food,” assistant manager Peng Gong says. “They say that it’s almost the same as in China. There are a lot of people from China who come to eat here.” Popular dishes include The House Special Chicken with Flavor Sauce ($15.99 for half) and Live Lobster with Ginger and Onion (market price). “We concentrate a lot on our seafood — and we use only the highest quality lobster, clams, shrimp and fish,” Gong adds. For one dish that showcases a lot of Canton’s seafood, try Shabu Shabu ($49.99 for regular, $59.99 for large),

lthough it just opened last April, Canton Seafood Restaurant has already managed to garner a reputation for appeasing even the pickiest of palates. “Our chef is a very talented chef,” assistant manager Peng Gong says. The breadth of Canton’s menu can attest to that claim. With hundreds of dishes, the restaurant features just about anything you might be craving. That type of variety is just what you need when planning a large holiday party filled with family and friends — all who might have different tastes. With an inviting dining room that holds up to 130 guests and a reasonable party menu, Canton Seafood is somewhere to keep in mind as you plan your holiday gathering. Smaller parties can rent an enclosed area in the restaurant. Canton Seafood offers a variety of set party menus starting at $188 for 10 to 12 people. That menu includes Peking Duck (whole), Live Lobster with Ginger and Onion (two) and Chinese Broccoli with Dried Fish. The restaurant also offers the option of swapping out dishes to each party menu, but requests need to be made in advance.

which features clams, scallops, fish, shrimp, beef and spinach. For daytime and late-night diners, some of Canton’s seafood dishes also are offered as lunch and late-night specials, including Shanghai-Style Fried Mochi ($7.99 as a lunch special/$8.99), which features mochi, Chinese cabbage, bean Shanghai-Style Fried Mochi sprouts and pork. ($7.99 as a lunch special/$8.99) “This is very good,” Gong says, “and not a lot of other restaurants have it.” Another lunch/late-night special is Seafood Fried Noodle ($7.99 as a lunch special/$8.99), which is a tasty medley of shrimp, scallop, fish, squid and vegetables. Additional specials start from just $5.99. Canton Seafood has a huge menu, so it’s hard to pick just one dish to order. But other customer favorites are Pork Chop with Salt and Pepper ($10.99), topped with garlic, onion and bell pepper, and Chicken with Satay Sauce ($12.99), which is seasoned with sour and spicy flavors. Canton’s kitchen staff is always thinking up new dishes to feature. The restaurant offers various specials periodically and recently unveiled a new vegetarian menu. “Right now, people are wanting to eat healthier,” Gong says. “For this menu, we use a lot of tofu, soybeans and vegetables.” Contact Christina O’Connor at diningout@staradvertiser.com

ow under new ownership, On On at McCully continues to dish up your favorites when it comes to classic Chinese fare. However, owner Qiao Chen also has revamped the menu offering an eclectic variety of dishes inspired by those currently found in Mainland China. “In Mainland China, the food has changed immensely,” says Chen. “Unlike a lot of local Chinese food in Hawaii, which has a lot of heavy sauces, many of the dishes (in Mainland China) are lighter and healthy. Yet, we want our customers to know that we still have all the dishes that kamaaina enjoy.” With more than 101 delicious choices to suit your palate, On On at McCully focuses on authenticity while also playing it up with local flair. An example of this is found in Honey Shrimp with Macadamia Nut. Priced at $14.99, this entree is a spin-off of the traditional Honey Shrimp with Walnuts and features tender deepfried shrimp in a sweet mayonnaise sauce adorned with flavorful macadamia nuts. “We try our best to keep our ingredients as local as possible. We work with local Chinese farms and local fishermen to bring in the freshest items available,” Chen adds. Another hit item off the menu is On On at McCully’s House Special Chicken ($10.99). Restaurant manager Vincent Zhuang refers to it as very spicy, but assures that it draws in a crowd. “House Special Chicken is made with chicken wings marinated in a sour-spicy sauce,” he explains, noting that the sauce is concocted from a secret recipe. “Our executive chef Joe Li was trained in Mainland China and has been cooking for a total of 30 years, 23 of those years were

spent in Hawaii.” On On at McCully uses no MSG in its cooking, and Zhuang says listening to customer feedback is an integral part of running a restaurant. “We have guest feedback forms that we ask our customers to fill out and valid suggestions are entered into a raffle drawing to win a prize on the 8th of every month. Prizes include watches, jewelry and

Ocean House Situated beachfront in Outrigger Reef Hotel, Ocean House welcomes you home and treats you to a world-class dining experience. According to general

manager David Nagaishi, guests from across the globe come for a taste of premier island fare, while also soaking in the immaculate oceanfront views as they dine on the shores of Waikiki. Stuff yourself with Ocean House classics such as prime rib, fresh island fish and more. However, one dish in particular to take note of is Crab Stuffed Mahi Mahi ($33.50), which presents diners with twin filets of fresh island mahi mahi stuffed with blue crab stuffing, and then steamed to perfection and topped with the restaurant’s homemade béarnaise sauce accompanied by steamed asparagus. “This is our most popular fish dish,” Nagaishi explains. “The mahi is very tender and the stuffing doesn’t overpower the fish. In fact, it complements it very well.

“We also have a new executive chef, Aurelio Garcia, who came on board about a week ago, so we’re really excited about that.” The next time you want to feel at home in the islands, fill up on Ocean House’s fabulous cuisine. Ocean House Outrigger Reef Hotel 2169 Kalia Road 923.2277

Tropical Tribe’s authentic acai

A TROPICAL TRIBE WHERE 1637 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu (Across from Papa John’s Pizza and 24-Hour Fitness) CALL 366.8226 HOURS Monday-Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Closed Sundays WEBSITE Tropical-Tribe.com Classic Acai Bowl ($7 regular, $8.50 large) Chris Fleck photo

ncient tribes of the Amazon valleys consumed the ultra-beneficial acai berries for numerous reasons. Survival was key for people of these tribes and with the support of acai consumption, people gained healthy, optimal energy and focus from juices they concocted from acai pulp. Today, we may not need acai to survive, but the berries’ nutritional enhancements combined with its delicious taste makes an acai bowl a smart and healthy choice. Yet, as the acai craze has certainly sky-rocketed in Hawaii, one acai connoisseur is making sure quality is not compromised in the process. “What you truly want is the properties of the acai. It is extremely higher than many other fruits and berries. It has many vitamins, much more antioxidants than blueberries or grapes and has the same fats similar to avocado, a healthy, cholesterol controlling fat,” says Tropical Tribe owner Andre Alves de Moraes, who imports his high-quality, premium acai and guarana berries directly from Brazil. “When I came to Hawaii, I started trying acai and noticed something was off. What happens is acai is an expensive product so places started mixing theirs with blueberries, apple juice or soy milk. You get a low percentage, low quality acai.” The owner likes to keep his acai bowls simple, keeping the natural flavors and properties of the acai and guarana berries as the foundation of each bowl. Tropical Tribe’s Classic Acai Bowl ($7 regular, $8.50 large) combines acai, guarana and toppings, which include organic granola, strawberry, blueberry, banana and honey. “I love acai, it is extremely popular in Brazil. I just wanted to bring authenticity to the acai here,” Alves de Moraes says.

A bit of advice to all those in the service industry... Have a sense of humor. Never take yourself too seriously or take anything too personally. You will encounter obnoxious customers who have had a bad day. They may think it’s their right to say what they have to say, but it’s your job to angle the interaction your way. Remember, a grumpy customer is better than none at all. Being friendly to only the amicable will be your downfall. When you encounter a grouch that deserves a punch in the mout, learn to flip the situation...that my friend, is what true service is all about. Sincerely,

Jay Chen with Crab Combo Samsun Jjamppong ($10.95)

Jajangmyeon ($8.95)

Delivers Cuisine Fit for Royalty

Crab Combo ($69.95)

Story by Kyle Galdeira • Photos by Tony Grillo ith a large selection of fresh seafood available daily, Lobster King provides diners with the royal treatment by offering up a king’s ransom of tasty dishes at affordable prices.

W

Customers have flocked to the eatery located conveniently at the corner of South King and Keeaumoku streets to enjoy a wide variety of items, which also are available to-go, that satisfy lunch, dinner and latenight cravings. “We’ve been doing business here for more than two years now, and we really appreciate our customers,” says owner June Kim. “We’ve been busy ever since we opened. We still have the same low prices and a variety of specials.” Through November, customers can enjoy a whole live lobster prepared to their liking for just $9.99. Larger lobsters also are available for $14.95 per pound, and as Kim explains, “We cook it for you just the way you like it in a variety of spices and seasonings.” In addition to the more than 170 dishes on the menu, Lobster King also serves up an assortment of daily and lunch specials. Kim recommends Jajangmyeon ($8.95 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 9

p.m. to 3 a.m.), a large bowl of stir-fried meat and vegetables with black bean sauce served on a bed of noodles and topped with fresh cucumber. As a special offer for Dining Out readers, Jajangmyeon is available for $6.95 with the coupon found on Page 6. “The reason why we’re offering some of these new items is because a lot of local ladies asked me, because I’m Korean and they watch the popular Korean dramas, and they see the black noodle dish on TV and asked me if I would serve it,” Kim says. “I put this together and it became very, very popular — the customers love it. It tastes exactly like what they were used to eating 30 years ago in Korea.” Another popular new addition to the menu is Samsun Jjamppong ($10.95 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), which is a spicy seafood noodle soup that has also drawn rave reviews from diners. “The Jjamppong is for those spicy food lovers. It has big chunks of seafood, including scallops, squid, mussels and shrimp, and everybody loves it,” says Kim. “The customers are surprised with how much seafood we can give them in this one dish for such a reasonable price. We’re a seafood wholesaler, so that’s why we can do that.” Lobster King also serves up a hearty assortment of fresh seafood in Crab Combo ($69.95), a large platter

full of Rock Crab, Dungeness Crab, King Crab legs and Snow Crab. Diners can choose from a wide variety of flavor and spice combinations as well, including garlic butter, lemon mayonnaise and spicy onion sauce. “The combo offers really big portions. It’s a great value,” Kim says. The eatery also boasts a seafood market adjacent to the restaurant that is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and offers what Kim calls “the best prices in town.” Seafood seekers can choose from a wide variety of fresh, live lobster, crab, abalone, fish, clams and other seasonal selections available at market prices. The items are shipped in two to three times a week from all over the country to guarantee freshness. Lobster King offers up a full bar, and customers can also bring their own wine for a corkage fee of $10 per table. Catering and set party menus also are available for special occasions and large groups. Just in time for the holidays, Lobster King is offering a special on gift certificate purchases. Customers will receive 10 percent off each gift certificate purchased, and Kim encourages diners to make holiday dining reservations in advance as the eatery continues to gain popularity thanks to loyal eaters who enjoy the royal treatment.
