hristmas is a little more than a week away, and I couldn’t be happier! Not only do I love the spirit of the season, festive moments with family and friends, sweater weather, sippin’ on a mug of hot chocolate topped with a mound of whipped cream, gift wrapping and more, but this time of year gives me an excuse to eat like a queen. Yes, indeed! Quite honestly, it’s a bit hard to eat healthy during the holidays (believe me, I’m trying), so sometimes you just gotta throw in the towel and indulge. And you’ll never guess what I’ve been craving this week. Shrimp! These glorious critters of the sea have been calling out my name and I’ve been giving in 100 percent to its succulence. So, come along and witness the amazing shrimp delicacies at the following Ono, You Know establishments that make for a very merry me! You’ll want to dive right in before they’re all gone!

with scallops and shrimp and glazed with Blue Hawaii Sushi’s famous dynamite sauce. When it comes to selecting an entree, North Shore Shrimp, also known as Garlic Shrimp, is a no-brainer. Priced at $12.95, relish in juicy pieces of shrimp perfectly sauteed in butter, lemon and garlic. I promise you, the aroma alone will have your mouth watering for days. All entrees come complete with a side of
rice, assorted vegetables, hot tea, miso soup and house salad with ginger dressing. Blue Hawaii Sushi most recently added okazu favorites to its onolicious selection as well. The okazuya is open daily from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. and offers an assortment of a la carte items, including Shrimp Tempura Cone Sushi ($3.50 apiece), Nishime and the ever popular Bento Box ($5.75), which comes with a free drink. This Keeamoku Street eatery is open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight, and satisfies the most intense of cravings. And if it’s shrimp you’re after Canton Seafood breaks the mold and presents you with a Chinese shrimp creation that goes beyond the norm. T
he husband-and-wife team of Tommy and Lien Dang are living the American Dream. As owners of Pho My Lien, an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in Aiea, this dynamic duo is well aware of the value of hard work and dedication. Originally from Vietnam, the Dangs have the ultimate recipe for success, along with the freshest of ingredients that are incorporated into Pho My Lien’s cuisine.
Conveniently located in Westridge Shopping Center, Pho My Lien offers its customers delicious home-style cooking at great values. Quite a simple concept, yes, but one that has been without fail for more than a decade. “What we try to achieve here at Pho My Lien is good family dining at reasonable prices. We’ve been in business in Aiea going on 13 years now and we’ve gained great support from local families as well as the military,” says Walter James, a longtime friend of the

Dangs, who also serves as the restaurant’s financial adviser and marketing planner. “I’ve known Tommy for 30 years. He was one of the original boat people who came over from Vietnam many years ago.” “Lien would often cook for us and we would always say, ‘You should open up a restaurant.’ We kept joking with her because her food was so good. So, one day she came to me and said that she and Tommy would like to open up a restaurant, so, of course, I gladly offered my support and helped them.” Pho My Lien originally opened its doors in 1999 in Waikiki before relocating nine years later to its current location. According to James, the move has offered nothing but success for the Dangs. “There’s nothing better than partaking in comfort food within a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Hawaii is a melting pot when it comes to food, and upon your first visit to Pho My Lien, I know that you’re going to like it. We haven’t changed the menu in almost 10 years,” explains James, adding that Lien does the majority of the cooking from her own family recipes that she’s tweaked a bit over the years. Tried-and true favorites from Pho My Lien’s expansive menu include Crispy Spring Rolls ($7.50 for four pieces) — filled with pork, chicken and shrimp along with shredded carrots, long rice and mushroom, then deep-fried until golden brown, and served with lettuce, mint leaves, rice noodles and a homemade sauce; and Summer Rolls (two for $4.95) — with rice vermicelli, mint leaves, bean sprouts and your choice of boiled shrimps, shredded pork, barbecue beef, barbecue pork, barbecue chicken
or tofu wrapped in a rice sheet and served with a special peanut sauce or fish sauce. “What sets Pho My Lien’s cuisine apart from other restaurants is its commitment to absolute freshness,” James says. “Tommy goes to Chinatown almost every day to purchase fresh, locally grown vegetables. You’ll notice every dish has a nice crisp, wholesome and fresh taste.” The taste James speaks of is very much apparent in the restaurant’s Chicken Salad ($7.50) and Green Papaya Salad ($7.50). “This Papaya Salad is the best that I’ve ever had,” James says of the dish, which comes with shredded green papaya and shrimp mixed with mint leaves and peanuts, and is splashed with a house special salad dressing. Best known for its exorbitant array of outstanding dishes, Pho My Lien’s everpresent deals have always drawn in crowds of eager diners as well. Every month, the establishment offers an unbeatable special for $4.99 or less. This month’s special is Vietnamese Chicken Salad ($4.99). “Coming up next month, we’ll be featuring three in-house specials, each priced at $7.99, including Shrimp Fried Rice; Barbecue Chicken, Summer Rolls and Spring Rolls with Rice Vermicelli; and Summer Rolls and Spring Rolls with Rice Vermicelli,” James says. Yet, it’s the pho that will always remain a signature item on the menu. This traditional Vietnamese beef noodle soup is said to be a daily tonic and elixir that

clears the head and warms the heart. Each bowl of pho is served with herbs, mint leaves, bean sprouts, chili pepper, lemon wedges and special sauces. And customize it just the way you like it by selecting from as many as five choices of meat to accompany the dish: slices of rare steak, well-done beef flank, soft tendon, tripe and beef balls. Other popular pho dishes are Pho with Chicken Meat, Pho with Mixed Vegetables and Pho with Shrimp and Squid. “The pho has a great, refreshing taste. It’s almost like shabu shabu,” James states, noting that while Vietnamese cuisine has gone mainstream on the local dining scene, Lien has been able to make her own cuisine. “We attribute all of Pho My Lien’s success to the food and hard work that Tommy and Lien put in every day. They are here seven days a week, 10 hours per day, 360 days a year,” he adds. “We have a bunch of repeat customers, and we’d like to thank all of our loyal customers for always coming back to dine here. We couldn’t be happier.” For the Dangs, what once was a dream is now a “phobulous” reality.

Y
akiniku Million has been a grilling, slurping and overall tasty place for everything Korean for nearly three decades, and the appetizers are no exception. Whether you have a hankering for something crunchy, spicy, rich or juicy, you’ll likely find it on the menu. There may be no better introduction to Million’s pupu menu than the Nok Do Jeon or Mung Bean Pancake ($6). The beans are ground to form a base flour that is then mixed with bean sprouts, kim chee, kalbi beef, and fried to a dark, crispy brown. Another handy finger food is Goon Man Doo ($5). Large wonton wrappers are stuffed with tofu, long rice, onion and beef. The flaky skins shimmer on the plate and the tender pockets of goodness are tasty whether you use the special soy-based dipping sauce or not. And that’s how it should be.

Romaine lettuce, sesame leaves and side flavorings, which include jalapeno, garlic, miso paste, and a salt and shrimp paste. At $19.95, the pile of tender pork is not only a fun, interactive way to dine but it’s an economical way to share a starter with a half dozen of your favorite friends or family members. Million is famed for its semisecretive house sauce that is found adorning several dishes on the menu. The ingredients aren’t nearly as important as the pleasure one gets from eating a dish
with the deep red liquid, such as Pan Fried Spicy Octopus ($15.95). Fresh octopus is sauteed with zucchini, onion, carrots and that flavorful sweatproducing sauce. Obviously, this space isn’t large enough to list all the menu favorites at Million. No worries. Just ask a friend, a coworker, an auntie or uncle, or just some random person on the street. They’ve all been to the inimate restaurant on the small back street that produces some of the best Korean food on Oahu. @ WARD

hile desserts are often eaten at the end of your meal, Larry’s Bakery in Salt Lake makes treats so irresistibly yummy that you won’t feel bad making a sweet faux pas before dinner. All the holiday delectables will put you and your tummy in good spirits, while giving you great gift options for friends, family or coworkers. Larry’s Bakery is proud to introduce its ChristmasShaped Lilikoi Loaf ($19.95), and according to co-owner Iris Yafuso, it’s the perfect gift to give this holiday season. “A lot of companies are giving it to clients, or for

when they go to people’s homes,” she says, also noting that the staff can write a personalized message atop the pastry. “We have it in a regular loaf style, like a pound cake, but we put it in the shape of a Christmas
tree for the season.” There also is a regular loaf style available that resembles a pound cake. But for Christmas, Larry’s really gets into the holiday spirit and creates it in the shape of a festive tree. Nothing really says holidays like the jolly colors of the lights and gift wrapping paper, and the Christmas Color Butter Loaf ($6.50) fits the jovial mood. “The Christmas Color Butter Bread we actually do year round, with different colors each holiday,” says Yafuso of the highly requested Christmas item. “This is always popular.” The dough is braided
before being baked, which gives it that unique look, and Yafuso says these loaves are perfect for Halloween (black and orange) or even Easter (pastels), as well. If you’re like many locals on the island, it’s hard to forget the palm leaves Larry’s Bakery served up in the past. And just for the holidays, the establishment is coming out with Mini Palm Leaves (six pieces, $2.50). These little delights normally are put into the gift baskets, but they’re also available a la carte (which means you can snack on them at your convenience).

STORY BY KYLE GALDEIRA I PHOTOS BY LEAH FRIEL ust in time for the holidays, Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine is serving up a special buffet to help diners celebrate with family and friends. The restaurant will be adding special items to its already supple buffet such as roast turkey, prepared the same way as traditional Chinese roast duck, roasted ham, as well as special beef and pork dishes to complement existing buffet favorites such as snow crab legs, salt and pepper shrimp, steamed fish fillet with a ginger onion soy sauce and mussels in a black bean and basil sauce. And, as general manager James Ching explains, the special holiday buffet also will include Ho Ho’s “famous” pumpkin custard pie, which has become a seasonal favorite of those visiting the Kapolei eatery this time of year. The special holiday buffet will be available Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day for $12.95 at lunch and $19.95 for dinner (children’s prices are discounted according to height, and those under the age of 3 eat for free). “The roast turkey is cooked in the oven with fire, just like roast duck hanging in the windows of Chinatown,” says Ching when describing the centerpiece of the much-anticipated holiday buffet. “It’s tasty and juicy, and the skin is nice and crispy. We still have salt and pepper shrimp available on the buffet, too, as well as honey lemon mayo shrimp.” At the Kapolei eatery, authentic Chinese food is fused with local-style preparation techniques, and customers can choose from numerous selections served up on the all-you-can-eat buffet, or order specific favorites a la carte. The eatery, which gets its name from the Cantonese phrase for “very good,” or “nice,” is well-known for its salt and pepper shrimp.

“It’s been the most popular since we opened in 2004,” says owner Crystal Chan of the salt– and-pepper style that also incorporates garlic and other flavorful accents surrounding the deep-fried delicacies. “The customers like it very much, they don’t want us to change!” The shrimp and snow crab legs headline Ho Ho’s traditional dinner buffet, which gets

under way nightly at 5 p.m. The spread features a wide range of selections including the extremely popular fried chicken wings, walnut shrimp and steamed sea bass with ginger onion and soy sauce, and is priced at an economical $17.95 Monday through Thursday nights, and $19.95 Friday through Sunday evenings. Additionally, selected items are available on Ho Ho’s lunch buffet that is served from 10
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, and is light on the wallet at just $9.95 Monday through Friday, and $11.95 on weekends. “You get good food at a good price, I don’t think you can find another dinner buffet like this for under $20 like we offer,” says Ching, who notes that the recent economic downturn has been hard on the local community. Despite the increases in food cost because of a host of uncontrollable factors, Ho Ho’s prices have remained affordable, and loyal customers keep coming back for more. “We combine local touches with traditional Hong Kong-style cooking to keep a unique touch on our recipes. We also offer a lot of free parking and a nice view of Kapolei.” Ho Ho’s offers a full a la carte menu, along with favorites from the buffet, as well as a host of other dishes, including everything from roasted duck ($9.95 half, $19.95 whole) to an assortment of noodle plates such as the mixed seafood chow min with vegetables ($8.95) and oyster sauce chicken chow mein ($7.50). Customers are encouraged to call ahead for large party reservations as special group discounts are available for the buffet and individual dishes. Ho Ho’s buffet makes it easy for groups, as the food stays hot and fresh as diners arrive in waves — the perfect solution for that favorite cousin or uncle who operates on Hawaiian Time. And, for those looking for a quick bite in the morning, Ho Ho’s opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. Sundays, and offers an assortment of freshly-made Manapua. The eatery serves up both baked ($1.35) and steamed ($1.25) Manapua, and also offers local favorites including shrimp dumplings, pork hash and half moons.

f you were to say “Thai food” and “Hawaii” in the same sentence, “Let’s go to Keo’s” would likely be the phrase that follows. That’s because restaurateur and chef Keo Sananikone has stood at the epicenter of Thai cuisine since 1977. His exotic, savory and authentic flavors have made Keo’s Thai Cuisine the largest and longest-running eatery of its kind in the state. His dishes also have garnered
acclaim from countless notable publications as well as celebrities, politicians and even royalty. Sananikone insists it’s not the glitz and glam that keeps regulars coming back for more. Instead, it’s the simplicity of fresh ingredients that gives his menu an outstanding reputation. “It’s always been good Thai food that has made Keo’s popular among locals and tourists for the

Chai Chaowasaree, who’s been known to draw in Hawaii’s top entertainers to serenade guests on a regular basis. “Hapa’s Barry Flanagan was the first one who offered his support. Since Hapa was the first group to perform at Chai’s when we first opened, there’s no better way than to have them perform for our closing,” he adds. Hapa is set to take the stage Dec. 30 and bid a fond farewell to this award-winning restaurant best known for its Pacific Rim cuisine. Other artists scheduled to perform this month include Jake Shimabukuro, Sista Robi Kahakalau, Jerry Santos, Kelii Kanealii, Brothers Cazimero, Danny Couch and Na Leo’s Lehua Kalima. All performances will take place at 7 p.m., and you can visit chaisislandbistro.com for specific performance dates. “I must say a big mahalo to my ohana of entertainers who have supported us from when we first opened until now,” Chaowasaree says. And if you’re a fan of Chai’s cuisine, you’re in luck! Although Chai’s Island Bistro will no longer be, Chaowasaree will open a new restaurant on the ground floor of Honolulu Pacifica Building (1009 Kapiolani Blvd.) early next year. According to Chaowasaree, the Kelii Kanealii and Miss Aloha Hula Healani Yuen | Photos courtesy Chai’s Island Bistro restaurant will focus on healthier fare.
fter more than 14 years, Chai’s Island Bistro in Aloha Tower Marketplace will officially close its doors Dec. 31. “Once we announced the closing, many of our longtime entertainers who’ve performed here in the past have called to ask if they could perform one last time,” says restaurant owner and chef

For one time only through the end of the month, you can purchase a $50 gift certificate for the price of $25, redeemable at Chaowasaree's new restaurant in the coming months. “Also, if you come for dinner this month we will give you a Chef Chai gift certificate worth $20. orean Hibiscus BBQ comes to Kaimuki from Aina Haina Shopping Center, where it had been for 14 years before closing its doors in 2010. But to the delight of many diners, co-owners Raymond and Shirley Kodani re-opened Korean Hibiscus BBQ at its new location on Waialae Avenue in January. “A lot of our customers actually come from Aina Haina now, and they remember us,” Raymond says. “I guess when you have been somewhere for 14 years, you kind of grow up with a family, and you become part of their family.” Before opening up their Aina Haina restaurant, Shirley worked at

or those of you who have been wondering what ever happened to Korean Hibiscus BBQ, the restaurant that served up all of your favorite takeout treats, don’t worry — it’s still here. It just had a location change earlier this year. So, loyal customers, you can now find Korean Hibiscus BBQ at its new venue in Kaimuki, where it found its new home last January. The husband-and-wife owners Raymond and Shirley Kodani took a couple of years off to spend more time with their family, but now they’re back. And their food is just as good as ever. Raymond describes the restaurant’s food as a “compromise” and a “hybrid” of both traditional Korean foods and local flavors. “We are not doing all of the regular, standard Korean meals, but we are doing some of the traditional ones. But then we also have ‘hybrid’ ones,

a variety of restaurants, primarily in counter service, and Raymond worked in electronics. But Shirley, who learned to cook from her mother, had a longtime dream to open up her own place. Not long after Korean Hibiscus BBQ opened, Raymond decided to come aboard and help his wife with running the restaurant. “All the recipes, all the seasonings — it’s all hers,” he says of his wife. Raymond hopes that more of their regular customers from their other location come and visit them, and grab a tasty bite to eat. “We have seen a lot of our former customers,” he adds, “and it’s nice to see those familiar faces.”

People can just call in their order, and we will get it ready, and they can swing by and pick it up. It is pretty fast and straight forward.” Korean Hibiscus BBQ lives up to its namesake, as Raymond says that the barbecue items are among the most popular. These include BBQ Beef ($9.50) and BBQ Chicken ($9) — both tasty, tender dishes. If is seafood you’re after, look no further than Saba Fillet ($9), a light, flavorful fish. But if you can’t seem to decide on just one entree, no problem. The restaurant offers a variety of combination meals. There are the three entree combinations, including Korean Hibiscus Sampler ($11.50), which includes kalbi, barbecue beef and barbecue chicken. The Two-Combo Plate ($10.75) allows you to choose from 10 different items. Possible combinations, for example, are the Two-Combo Plate Fish Jun and Zucchini Jun ($10.75) and the Two-Combo Plate Meat Jun and Spicy BBQ Chicken ($10.75). With its regular or combination meals, customers also have the option of selecting four side dishes out of 13 options, including various types of kimchee, long rice, macaroni salad, corn, seaweed, daikon, choi sum and sweet potato. “This gives our customers a lot of variety,” Raymond says. “Even if two customers order the same thing … each meal will be uniquely designed for the individual because you are choosing what you want.” Raymond says that with all of the restaurant’s combination meals, there are 50 different options total. egarded as a premier choice in local dining, Ocean House, situated in Outrigger Reef on the Beach Hotel, welcomes its guests to a whole new world of possibilities. Feel right at home while soaking in the oceanfront views and marvelous sunsets, all the while partaking in delicious cuisine, which patrons have delighted in for the past 10 years. Most recently, Ocean House has brought a new executive chef on board. Aurelio Garcia joined the staff about a month ago and offers 34 years of culinary experience. “We are very happy to have Chef Aurelio join our team,” says restaurant general manager David Nagaishi. “Chef Aurelio is very talented. He is a hands-on chef and likes to work side by side with his crew.” “I really like the energy here and the staff has been very welcoming,” Garcia adds. “The atmosphere is wonderful and the quality of the food is great.” Originally known for its predominant seafood selection, Ocean House offers a meaty selection of entrees as well, such as its Hawaiian Sea Salt Slow Roasted Premium Angus Prime Rib, which makes mouths water on a daily basis. Yet, Green Onion Steamed Monchong ($32.50) will always remain a top choice among diners. An island favorite, this tender piece of fish is served with yuzu chinoise sauce and a blend of stirfried vegetables. “We’re known for our rich selection of food, so I want to make sure I serve everything the best as possible,” Garcia says, noting that he plans to incorporate an increase of local products to the menu. “A special of mine that I recently featured is Pan-Seared Opakapaka with Maui Gold

pineapple and Hilo-grown ginger. As for starters, I really enjoy the Edamame Hummus.” According to Nagaishi, Edamame Hummus ($11.50) is a best-selling appetizer on the menu with its seasoned soy bean puree served with crisp tofu cakes drizzled in a balsamic vinaigrette. And, of course, we all know dessert is the most important part of each meal, so there will always be room for Uncle Moki’s Chocolate Lava Flow Cake ($10), which features a triple chocolate semi-sweet chocolate fudge cake with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. 3 DINING OUT | DEC. 16-22, 2012 | 27

Camellia Buffet Provides Endless Thrills on the Grill STORY BY KYLE GALDEIRA + PHOTOS BY LEAH FRIEL
A
s the sturdy and stunning flower for which it is named continues to bloom season after season, year after year, Camellia Buffet has blossomed again following a short respite. The family-owned operation has satisfied Hawaii diners’ appetites for nearly 40 years with Korean and other local favorites that are cooked yakinikustyle on grills situated at every table. The current incarnation of Camellia Buffet is situated in Stadium Mall, at the location formerly occupied by Pizza Hut, and has drawn a host of new and returning customers eager to dig in to the all-you-can-eat buffet, which features both the traditional yakiniku meats and vegetables for grilling as well as fullyprepared selections served hot and fresh on the buffet line. The Camellia story began in 1977 as Jaeshin Park, a former Korean Air employee who brought his family to Hawaii just years prior, opened the first of what would be nine restaurant locations, in Waikiki. After Park suffered a stroke five years ago, he and his family decided to scale back operations, eventually closing what had served as the last Camellia location in Pearl Kai in February. However, after an overwhelming show of support by customers who missed their yakiniku fix, Park’s son, Ronnie, and daughter, Kris, decided to bring back the iconic buffet to keep the restaurant’s legacy alive.
“The camellia is a very strong flower that is always in bloom, so the restaurant is always blooming, too” explains Kris, who manages the restaurant while Ronnie serves as owner. “We were going to retire completely, but our loyal customers kept calling and asking us to open a buffet on this side of the island, and we live in Salt Lake, so when we passed the location and found it was empty, that’s how we ended up here today.” While Jaeshin has slowed down significantly after suffering the stroke, he still enjoys eating his Camellia favorites. On a recent visit by Dining Out, the former restaurateur was at the eatery
enjoying some of his favorite buffet items, cooking them to perfection on the easy-to-use grill powered by butane canisters. While the original buffet in Waikiki featured an exclusively Korean menu, the current version of Camellia offers a host of Korean favorites as well as local-style dishes that make up some of the hot buffet items. The bountiful buffet is available daily at lunch ($14.95 for adults and $7.95 for children, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and dinner ($24.95 for adults and $12.95 for children, served from 5 to 10 p.m.), and a 10-percent discount is available for members of the military and seniors, Jaeshin and Ronnie Park
Monday through Thursday. The savory spread includes Kal Bi short ribs, barbecue chicken, spicy chicken, barbecue beef and pork, fried noodles, fish jun, mixed seafood stir-fry, Korean spicy chicken karaage and a host of soups, vegetables and fruit. The dinner selections include the aforementioned items as well as shrimp, cubed beef sirloin, Korean crab and steamed clams served in a special house sauce. Takeout plates also are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and include four vegetable selections and white or brown rice. Some of the plate lunches include BBQ Beef ($7.95), BBQ Chicken ($7.95), Fish Jun ($7.95) and Fried Mandoo ($6.95). Diners also can create a combination plate with two of their favorite selections for $9.95. “Our lunch price is really reasonable,” explains Kris. “You go to any takeout place, and the kal bi alone is $11. Here, you can get kal bi plus all the other meats to cook yakiniku, plus fish and other items. We’re trying to keep our prices low so that our loyal local customers will keep coming back and enjoying our food.” Just in time for the holidays, Camellia also offers a catering menu to aid in planning a special party or gathering. Platters of shrimp, kal bi, spicy chicken and other favorites are available in medium and large platters ranging from $45 to $185.
