Thousands of people travel far and wide to visit family and friends for the holidays. Chances are many holiday hosts and hostesses will open their homes to overnight guests. lthough visions of Cousin Eddy from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and his band of misfit family members come to mind, most holiday guests are more of a pleasure to have around. It might be mildly inconvenient to host guests for a day or two, but preparation can help alleviate such inconveniences.
A
How to
accommodate
overnight holiday
guests
There are a number of ways to get ready for holiday guests. Keep these tips in mind as you prepare your home. • Set aside space. Not every household has a spare guest room available, but there are ways to make guests feel like they have their own private area. There’s the possibility of giving up your own room for the night or set up a space in an out-of-the-way den or a child’s bedroom for the time being. People who live in the house may be more comfortable bunking with another than an outside guest.

• Offer individual linens. A fresh set of sheets and towels contributes to a hotel’s comfort level. Welcome guests with a set of fresh sheets and soft towels. • Stock extra toiletries. The holiday season is a busy time, and it’s easy for travelers to forget a thing or two. Keep an extra toothbrush and some spare mouthwash at the ready. Travel-sized soaps and shampoos may be more convenient for guests and might help them feel more comfortable and less burdensome staying in your home. • Accommodate guests’ needs. Some guests may be allergic to certain foods, while others may prefer to watch the late-night news before bed. Find out their preferences beforehand so you can do your best to make them feel comfortable.
• Have laundry services available. Give guests their own laundry bag so they can wash clothes if they’ll be staying for an extended period of time. Fresh clothes make anyone feel better. • Invest in an air mattress. Having extra places for guests to sleep often comes in handy. Air mattresses are easy to inflate at a moment’s notice for an unexpected guest and can be quickly deflated and stored in a closet or under a bed. • Bend house rules. While certain rules may be set in stone, bed times or meal times may have to be changed to accommodate guests who aren’t used to the goings-on of the household. It can be fun or frustrating to have a guest stay over for the holidays. But being prepared can make the time go by much more smoothly.

Why do people buy and play games? Entertainment value certainly factors in, but there are several other benefits to puzzles and games, including their educational value. ust think about what happens when children (or adults) sit down to play a board game or contemplate a puzzle. Individuals come together, learn lessons about getting along and strategize. Games also encourage following guidelines for play and winning or losing with good manners. There are many who believe these are valuable life lessons, but games and puzzles also may have other intrinsic educational value in the real world. Although it can’t be assumed that playing games or doing puzzles will help make better students, there are some indications that playing certain games can have academic benefits. In a 2008 study by Geetha Ramani and Robert Siegler, preschoolers were involved in “number line”board game research, where the player had to move a game piece through a series of sequentially numbered spaces. Prior to and after the game play the children were given math

tasks appropriate for their age group. The kids who were in the control group and didn’t play experienced no math skill improvement. But the ones who had played the line game had marked improvement in measured math skills. Ramani and Siegler have also found correlations between the number of board games that a child plays and a greater propensity for better preschool math performance. Puzzles are another form of recreation that also have some educational merit and could trigger certain areas of the brain, resulting in improvement in intellectual skills. Puzzles develop hand and eye coordination and foster skills in problemsolving. They also encourage kids not to give up until the finished product is reached. Chess has been a game of strategy played throughout the ages. There have been statements that chess can help a child become more intellectual and do better at school. Others ar-
gue the flip side, that it is the intellectual child who gravitates toward chess play and therefore skews the numbers in the terms of intelligence and chess relation. Still there is some evidence that chess has educational merit. Markus Scholz of the University of Leipzig in Germany studied kids with learning disabilities. Researchers assigned students to receive either 5 hours of math instruction each week or 4 hours of math and 1 hour of chess instruction each week. The kids were tested at the beginning of the school year and again at the end. The students who had received chess lessons showed more improvement

in basic math skills like counting and addition than those who had just received tutoring. When choosing games for children, educational value is derived most from games that require deductive reasoning and not pure chance from the spin of a wheel. A game like “Clue” or chess requires strategy and reasoning to become the winner. Even games like “Connect Four,” “Boggle,” “Scrabble,” and other deductive games are good choices to consider. Although games and puzzles have the fun factor, there are educational benefits that may arise also in play.

Holiday Season
It’s almost upon us — the holiday season. During this hectic season, people take on more responsibilities and commit to more events and get-togethers than any time of the year. All of this extra work can put a strain on the body if the average person is unprepared. Surviving the holidays requires thinking of them as athletic activities and training for the work ahead.
Survival T
ıps
he added responsibilities of the holidays, including shopping, decorating and hosting, puts added stress on everyone this time of year. Those not used to the on-thego speed and long days may find they suffer frequent ailments this time of the year, including physical injuries. Think about how the holidays are akin to an athletic event: • During shopping a person can unknowingly walk several miles in a store or mall. • Individuals often tote around heavy packages and/or lift weighty items. • Long hours are spent on one’s feet. • Fast decisions have to be made on purchases. • Holiday decorating may entail climbing up and down a ladder or
bringing heavy boxes out of the attic. • People may keep long hours traveling to social engagements, taxing their bodies. These are just a few demands on the body. In order to prevent fatigue or more serious injury from holiday activities, consider these pointers. • Stretch out before you hit the stores. Warm up stiff muscles to prepare for the day ahead. • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can tax the body and lead to feelings of sluggishness or even induce headaches. • Wear comfortable shoes with plenty of cushioning to withstand the impact of walking all day. • Use a backpack to tote essentials along. Plus, packages can be stuffed into the backpack to free up hands or balance the weight of purchases.

A soothing Hawaiian tune emanates as Ron Sugiyama tickles the strings on his guitar. Playing music eases his mind. The Kaneohe resident picked up the instrument shortly after he was given a life-saving kidney transplant. Sugiyama was a successful insurance agent, but began feeling fatigued. Six years ago he was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease and the prospect of getting on dialysis. He had to fight off the initial denial, “You’re so lost. Fear sets in. There is a sense of hopelessness that life will never be the same.” In 2008, that pessimism gave way to a glimmer of light. A week before his daughter’s graduation from pharmacy school, Sugiyama got a call from his doctor saying a kidney match had been found. The family of a complete stranger stepped forward to allow Sugiyama to write a new chapter in his life. He is deeply grateful for the anonymous gift, “Everything is wonderful. Organ donation is astounding and defies explanation.”

Since the life giving procedure, Sugiyama has been able to celebrate his 64th birthday, see his son become an attorney in New York, his daughter get married in San Francisco, and is expecting his first grandchild next year. “To get, you don’t take. You give. When you sacrifice something you gain,” says Sugiyama who continues advocating the NKFHs mission of prevention, early detection, and education, “Through volunteering I have found people who are thriving. It gives you a sense of hope.” The NKFH presses on with our mission of hope. Please give generously.

• Don’t carry around more than you can handle. Plan frequent trips to the car to drop off purchases. If lockers are available in the mall, use them. • Take breaks every hour and sit down to rest feet and de-stress. • Eat light, healthy foods. Greasy fast food could strain overstressed organs. Heart attacks during the holidays are common. Healthy foods can also help combat the average 6 pounds of weight a person gains during the season of overindulgence. • Caffeine can stress the body even more, so try to limit intake. • Know your limits. If your body is telling you enough is enough, call it a day.

Gift
The Christmas countdown has begun, and the days will no doubt fly off the calendar like they do every year. Before you know, it’s only a few days until the holiday is here.
Ideas When You’re T PRESSED
hose who haven’t yet started shopping may feel pressed for time and worry that they will not be able to find gifts for everyone on their lists — at least gifts that don’t look like they were afterthoughts. But good gifts can be found in the eleventh hour.
■ ADULTS
for T me
• Visit the local liquor store for a bottle of wine in the price range desired. Wrap it in a wine bag or leave it as is with a nice bow. • Pick up passes to a local attraction, such as an amusement park or a museum. Put together tickets for a play paired with a soundtrack of the production. • Food is often appreciated. A box of fine chocolates or one of those edible fruit arrangements will be a tasteful, and tasty, gift. • Fill a large bowl with a scooper, sprinkles, cherries, and other toppings for making ice cream sundaes. • Pick a gift that embraces the holiday spirit. Holiday music, ornaments or table decorations can be used this year or next.
■ CHILDREN • Pop into a toy store or a department store and pick up a cuddly stuffed animal. • Buy an art set for older children, full of paints and markers. If a complete set can’t be found, make an art package with a bunch of supplies packed into a gift bag. • Choose an educational gift that is still fun, like alphabet flash cards or puzzles. A subscription to a children’s magazine would also work, seeing as children love getting mail. • Few kids will turn down a DVD of their favorite television characters. The DVDs should feature an age-appropriateness rating to make choosing one even easier.
Christmas is right around the corner. If you have to purchase last-minute gifts, be sure they don’t look like an afterthought.
■ TEENAGERS • Teenagers can be finicky, so a monetary gift will be one-size-fits-all. • Teenage girls may appreciate a gift basket of delicious scented lotions. • Passes for movies can make date night less expensive. • Consider a gift card or e-gift coupon for digital music downloads. • Give a subscription to a teen magazine so that everyone can keep abreast of their favorite celebrities.

hile those with more experience might know the tricks of the late season shopping trade, novice procrastinators might need a few of the following tips to make it through the season without a horror story of their own. • Consider online retailers. Shopping online might not be for everyone, but those without much time might want to consider online retailers, many of which guarantee delivery of the item by Christmas Day for orders placed as late as December 20. In addition, some retailers even guarantee delivery if the order is placed by December 22, but such guarantees often require consumers to choose overnight delivery, which can be costly. When shopping online, if no gifts stand out, consider buying an electronic gift certificate instead. Such certificates can often be delivered directly to a loved one’s e-mail inbox, and it only takes a matter of seconds for the delivery to be made. Though some find this impersonal, nowadays many people would prefer a gift card instead of another sweater. • Go the food-and-beverage route. One of the worst things about last minute holiday shopping is dealing with fellow procrastinators at

holiday shopping
tıps
Nearly everyone has a last minute holiday shopping horror story to tell. Be it a lateseason grab for a child’s must-have gift or fighting fellow procrastinators for a parking spot come the waning days of the season, veteran shoppers have experienced it all.
the local mall. Last minute shoppers tend to be as short on patience as they are on time. To avoid the malls, last minute shoppers can give the gift of food or drink for those friends or family members you will be seeing during the holiday season. A nice bottle of wine or a collection of gourmet
cheeses make thoughtful gifts, and last minute shoppers don’t need to visit the mall to get them. • Consider a monthly gift. As a nice bottle of wine or a package of gourmet cheeses proves, not all great gifts need to be picked up at the mall. A monthly gift like a magazine subscription or a membership to a monthly club (i.e., “Pastry of the Month”) are gifts that keep on giving all-year. Late-season shoppers will find these options especially appealing as they can almost always be ordered in just a few minutes, whether it’s over the phone or via the Internet. • Don’t abandon the mall entirely. Though procrastinators are in no danger of becoming extinct, most people do get their holiday shopping done well in advance of Christmas Day. As a result, truly last minute shoppers might find the mall isn’t so crowded on Christmas Eve. While the pickings might be slim for shoppers who wait until December 24, the lines may not be as long and the parking lot probably won’t be as packed. But keep in mind it will be impossible for a gift purchased on Christmas Eve to find its way under a tree unless you personally bring it to a loved one. If you can’t give the gift in person on Christmas, don’t wait until Christmas Eve to buy it. • Donate in a loved one’s name. If a specific charity is near and dear to a loved one’s heart, make a donation in their name. Charities are among the many organizations that are struggling to survive in the current economy, and your donation might go a long way to helping a cause your loved one truly supports.

What to do with all those
holiday
leftovers The food cooked during the holidays is often enough to feed an army. Too often, hosts and hostesses prepare and serve much too much food, only to find themselves left with a refrigerator full of leftovers when guests don’t eat as much as hosts had suspected. n order to avoid wasting food, many people attempt to create new meals from their excess holiday ingredients. Putting leftovers to good use can take a little ingenuity to disguise the reality that you’re eating turkey or ham for the third consecutive night. All it may take is a little inspiration to create delicious meals with repurposed holiday foods.
I With a few creative ideas, anyone can turn leftover holiday foods into new meals.
14 Kt Links/Snake/Box & Singapore chains
The first thing to keep in mind when using leftovers is food safety. Any food remaining after the holiday meal should be packed into storage containers and refrigerated or frozen no more than 2 hours after the meal has ended. This ensures that bacteria are not able to proliferate in the food and cause foodborne illnesses. Choose shallow containers, which will enable the food to
chill more uniformly and not create warmer spots that take longer to reach a safe storage temperature. Do not save any foods that have remained at room temperature for too long or seem questionable, especially dairy products. It is adviseable to discard leftovers (even if refrigerated) after 4 days. Use it or lose it! Now that leftovers are properly stored, you can think up some creative menu ideas for using them in the next few days. • Turn stuffing into croquettes or burgers by mixing chopped turkey with stuffing or adding a new meat to the equation, like sausage. • Dice ham and potatoes and add to the morning helping of eggs for a country-style omelette. • Promptly boil the turkey carcass to make homemade stock for soups and stews. • Turn leftover mashed potatoes into a creamy potato soup, with the addition of cream, bacon and scallions. • Use cranberry sauce in place of butter on bagels or toast. • Mash up leftover sweet potatoes and bake into a moist and delicious sweet potato loaf bread. • Create open-faced sandwiches for lunch by layering ham or turkey,
stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy on top of a thick slice of bread. • Diced meats, vegetables and onion can be added to a batter of pancake mix and turned into an easy quiche. • Host Mexican night and use leftover turkey meat to make spicy fajitas, complete with sour cream and salsa. • Use stale bread to make homemade croutons for salad or use in a bread pudding recipe. • Add cranberry sauce to boxed muffin mixes for a tart treat. • Turn leftover holiday meats into an Asian stir-fry with the addition of water chestnuts, bean sprouts, soy sauce, and mixed vegetables. • Grind meats to make a hearty meat loaf. • Make leftover potatoes into hash browns. • Cube leftover cake and serve on skewers and fruit for dipping into chocolate fondue. • Use pie crust and small ramekins to turn turkey or ham into savory pot pies. There are so many ideas for using leftover holiday foods this season. Experiment with flavors your family will enjoy.

Gift T baskets make an
easy, affordable option FOOD AND BEVERAGE GROUPINGS ARE POPULAR CHOICES FOR GIFT BASKETS.
he go-to gift of late is the gift card. Chance are, though, that recipients — although thrilled that they can do their own shopping — may find gift cards a bit impersonal. Statistics indicate that around $100 million in gift cards are purchased every year in the U.S. Despite being a popular gift item, roughly six to 10 percent of all gift cards go unused, according to the Tower Group. Some even come with inactivity fees. As an alternative to gift cards, gift baskets may be a welcome change. Gift baskets are relatively easy to put together and sometimes, especially around key holidays, can be purchased ready-made. Grouping similarly themed items together to fit a particular interest can fit the bill when shoppers can’t decide on a gift to buy. The advantage to gift baskets is that they can be assembled for just about any hobby, interest or occasion. They don’t even have to be in a traditional “basket.” Here’s a look of some easy gift groupings to fit a wide variety of events. • Kids activity bag: A simple gift that fits the needs of kids
is a backpack or tote bag filled with boredom-busters. These can include portable manipulative toys, coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, puzzles, DVDs, a disposable camera, and any other toys that fit the interests of the recipient. • Host/hostess gift: Saying thanks to a friend or family member who has invited you over for a dinner or overnight stay can be as simple as grouping a few things together. Put together a basket with a set of sheets, hand towels, pillow and other essentials that can be appreciated by future guests. • Food: One gift idea that goes quite well in a gift basket is food. Pick a theme and put the items together. Barbecue lovers can appreciate sauce, shish kabob skewers, spice rubs, a cookbook, hickory chips, grill tools, and other similar items.
Gift baskets are personalized gifts that are easy to assemble and can be a viable alternative to gift cards.

he joys of the holidays are many: Sharing eggnog, exchanging presents, trimming the tree, contacting the police to report a robbery. The last one certainly isn’t a joy, but it’s an all-too common reality of the season. But the holidays aren’t the only times that home break-ins take place. There’s no telling what goes through the minds of thieves, and preparing for any situation is the way to avoid loss due to theft. In the U.S., a home is robbed every 14.6 seconds, and the average dollar loss per burglary is $2,119, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Statistics Canada offers that break-ins are not only the most serious type of property crime committed in Canada, but they are also one of the most common. In 2009, there were more than 205,000 breakins reported to the police, accounting for 15 percent of all property crimes. Despite burglaries being down overall in numbers in both the U.S. and Canada, homeowners can still be diligent in their efforts to prevent break-ins and property loss. Here are some strategies for thwarting would-be thieves. • Break down cardboard boxes. There’s no better way to tell thieves about all the new presents you received than by advertising them at the curbside. Burglars will see that empty television box or other expensive gadget boxes put out for pickup and have a clue about the

Designer Q&A Offers Insıde Advice on
Clothing Gifts
It’s the season for holiday hustle and bustle and shoppers are seeking the perfect gifts for friends and family members. When given the choice of gifts, statistics show that clothing purchases and accessories top the list of the most popular, garnering 58 percent of the gifting share. nstead of choosing whatever first catches their eye on the racks, holiday shoppers may want to follow the expert advice of a renowned clothing designer to ensure their gifts are well received this season.
I
Here’s some expert advice and guidance to shoppers thinking of gifting with clothing this holiday season. Q: What trends are in style for 2011? A: There are many different interpretations of styles continuing through the winter, which began in fall. Lace ruffles and bows have taken on a multiple season lifespan along with bold hardware and finishings (pearls). Women’s fashion has been inspired by 60’s-era jackets and mixed prints. Q: Are certain colors “in” this season? A: For colors, dainty neutral and citrus brights compete for the most popular trend. This season’s colors also consist of “modern metallic” and neutrals. Pale blue and bold reds are two other must-have colors for this season.
Q: What clothing items should giftgivers lean toward when holiday gifting? A: Stay classic and basic for giving gifts during the holidays, especially when it comes to clothing. In general, most woman have their own sense of style and can be intimidated when given something too “avant garde” or fashion-forward. A favorite is a basic black jacket with great trim detail or textural patterns. Q: What should shoppers keep in mind when choosing clothing for gift-recipients? A: When buying clothing, try to have a good understanding of the person’s body shape so that you can really pick out a piece that accents his or her style and keeps the person feeling great! Remember, the holidays are a time for giving, so keep in mind what the person you are buying for likes and dislikes. Q: What clothes are good for thin figures, full figures? A: Many people have the misconception that
thin individuals are able to wear almost anything. It actually can be difficult to find the perfect styles for thin figures. Slim figures look good in ruffles and accents. Cinched waist and bold contrast looks great on this body type, too. Having a full figure doesn’t mean a person can’t wear fashion, it just means they should wear fashions that flatter their assets. A boat neck and shoulder pads (almost all of our styles incorporate shoulder pads) can help keep the upper body proportioned. The mix of silks and knit suiting together are perfect for this body type! As difficult as it once was to find designers creating styles for fuller-figured women, things have taken a drastic turn for the better. With Sak’s (and other retailers) investing a large interest in this department, and introducing designers such as Chanel, YSL, Dolce & Gabanna, and Toula, there have been big strides made for special-size shopping for fuller-figured women. Q: How can gift-givers shop designer without spending a fortune? The best advice would be to get basics and build, such as valuable, timeless pieces that will stay in style season after season. Many department stores are also offering designer collections at reasonable prices, including smaller boutiques.
