Home Couple falls in love with residence again — thanks to Homeworks’ remodeling of kitchen, baths

here’s a good reason why the kitchen and bath are the most remodeled rooms in the home. When appliances, countertops and cabinets become worn and dated, the atmosphere of the entire home is affected. Yes, the home starts to feel “old.” Owners planning to sell are generally advised by their Realtor that an investment in kitchen and bath remodeling will probably be recovered in the sales price, and that the kitchen is often the first room in the house potential buyers will investigate. Recently, the owners of a 30-year-old home in Kailua’s Hillcrest community — who love their home and had no intention of selling it —

decided they would get more enjoyment out of their abode if they upgraded and updated the kitchen and three baths. The home was designed with an open floor plan, with the project’s objective being to avoid opening up the kitchen and creating a great room. The owners’ preference was to retain the kitchen as a separate room while making better use of the existing space. New cherry wood cabinets, granite countertops, and ceramic tile flooring were installed. The oven and cooktop were replaced. “Appliance garages” were added under the cabinets to create a clean look and clear additional work space. Since the room was not large enough for an is-

land, two peninsulas were added. As a general contractor as well as a kitchen designer, Homeworks has the expertise to perform structural work when needed. In this case, the Homeworks’ team opened up a portion of the kitchen’s ceiling, which had originally been dropped to accommodate an air conditioning duct and recessed lighting, and the result was a more spacious feel due to the extra foot in height. The raised portion was trimmed with crown molding to create a new design feature, and ceiling fans were added. New window spaces were created above the sink areas in both the kitchen and the laundry room. The master bath was

two sinks, and a new vanity with additional storage were additional features of the sparkling new bathroom. The guest bathroom was also gutted and redone, with the exception being that the existing bathtub was retained. Rather than replace it, however, the owners opted to have it recoated with a porcelain finish. The powder room had a “face-lift,” and the entry was redesigned and reoriented. The existing standard-hinged doors were replaced by pocket doors so they would no longer open directly into the main living area. During the entire remodeling process, the owners continued living in the home. Because Homeworks was observant of their schedules, inconveniences were minimized. The owners noted that the only big

change in their lifestyle was using the microwave and ordering take-out more frequently while work was in progress in the kitchen. Homeworks also accommodated the owners by timing work on the bathrooms so at least one was always accessible.
