ave you ever wondered what sets professional home builders apart from guys who work “out of the back of their trucks”? Well, the answer is simple and it comes from the word “professional.” As with most professions, home builders and remodelers who keep up-to-date with new laws, methods and materials can offer the most to their clients. You wouldn’t feel comfortable getting your taxes done by someone who hasn’t studied the latest tax code or going to a doctor who only finished four years of medical school instead of 12, would you?

REASONS

to Replace Your Old Windows in 2011 I

s it time to replace your wornout windows with new Anlin windows? Here are five reasons why you should consider doing so in 2011.

1. SECURITY. Jalousie windows are the easiest to break into. It only takes a thief a matter of minutes to remove the glass and enter your home. Anlin windows have passed the stringent CFE (California Forced Entry) requirements. They come with a tamper-proof, cam-lock system that allows you to lock windows in the open position to prevent the uninvited from gaining access, but still provide enough ventilation to keep your abode cool. 2. COMFORT. Anlin windows are a dual-pane infinite energy barrier. They will keep heat and harmful ultraviolet light reflected away from your home, thus keeping things cool. If you have air conditioning, you can save up to 35 percent of your energy bill each month. 3. PRIVACY/APPEARANCE. New Anlin windows give your home a new home look and increase the value of your home the day that they are installed. Windows Hawaii has six different types of obscure/frosted glass that will give your home a distinctive look and afford you privacy without the need for curtains or window covering. 4. MAINTENANCE FREE. Anlin windows come with a lifetime installation warranty. This covers not only the windows themselves, but the installation as well. If one of your Windows Hawaii-provided windows leaks in 15 years, call the service department and the company will repair or replace it at no cost. The marine-grade vinyl is easy to clean — guaranteed not to fade, crack or powder, and is great for Hawaii’s salty air. Additionally, the easy-clean glass reduces the need to clean your windows. 5. PRICE. We have installed over 100,000 windows. We carry most major brands so that you can choose the window that is right for your home and budget. Our buying power and factory direct purchasing gets the best quality for the lowest price. You pay when you are completely satisfied with your windows and our installation. We don’t use sub-contractors. Make an investment in 2011 that improves the appearance and comfort of your home by taking advantage of Windows Hawaii’s new year discounts. Call Windows Hawaii at 671-0808 or 383-7233.

Making Dreams Come true at

Golden Cabinets A

t Golden Cabinets, we design to satisfy needs and fulfill desires. Just bring in the rough dimensions of your kitchen or bath, and we’ll do the rest. We utilize the latest in computer-aided design (CAD) — a program that allows us to create a realistic 3D image of your kitchen or bath in as little as 10 minutes.

Our cabinets feature all hardwood face frames, doors and boxes; no particle boards are used. We have oak, cherry and maple hardwood stained in shades to choose from, and all of our cabinets are in stock. This means that you can pick up your cabinets in just a few days — and not six to eight weeks after they were ordered.

You will be impressed with the quality of our cabinet construction. We offer full extension slides on all our drawers, or you may upgrade to Blum whisper close glides. Steel re-enforced corners and 5/8inch side walls and door pulls are included. Once you’ve made your choice, one of our design consultants will come to

your home and help take final measurements, if needed. Golden Cabinets also is a full-service company. We can remove and install your new cabinets as

IHD Get You Started

W

hen looking for someone to build your home, make sure you settle on a general contractor you’re comfortable working with. To qualify that statement, after interviewing potential contractors, you should base your final decision on the contractor’s quality of recent projects, as well as his knowledge of building, his relationship with subcontractors and his references. Steven Wong of Island Home Designs (IHD) is a general contractor you can trust. He’s on time for meetings, honest, communicates well and finds solutions to problems. Family and friends say it was a brave task taking on a recent project of tearing down an old house and rebuilding it from the ground up. The

house was a virtual buffet station for termites, with its foundation blocks literally floating over the dirt. But Wong had no fear and was determined to get things done. He has a calm demeanor and is patient with customers. If he doesn’t know about a product, he researches it and provides feedback. The relationship with your general contractor is a partnership. Like a maestro in a symphony, general contractors orchestrate the sub-contractors every move. Many residents don’t have the experience to coordinate home construction from the ground up. Let IHD be the one to help you get started. For more information, call Island Home Designs at 383-4663. SERVCO HOME AND APPLIANCE DISTRIBUTION BRINGS YOU...

Illuminating g insights As living green becomes more ingrained in our lives, LED lighting will continue to light the way, according to Jeff Dross, senior product manager of Kichler Lighting, who will introduce several new under-cabinet systems and landscape products with an ultra-efficient technology next year. For a casual, contemporary twist, Dross also suggests hanging chandeliers in new areas such as bathrooms, bedrooms and closets, and embracing today's art glass applications, which are much more chic and casual than the Tiffany lamps of the past. There'ss nothing g bland aboutt neutrals In a recent video posted on her website, Michelle Lamb — co-founder and chairwoman of Minneapo-

lis-based Marketing Directions Inc. and editorial director of The Trend Curve — spoke about a resurgence in neutrals in 2011. These more complex “chameleon” neutrals will have more color, and will shift and change based on the light and whatever's around them. Lamb claims that these neutrals will be “the likes of which we haven't seen in 20 years or more.” You've e gotta a have e heart The kitchen remains the “heart of the home,” according to Andrea Vollf of Andrea Vollf Interiors. Consumers interested in remodeling their kitchens should consider a well-designed, open, airy layout that integrates the kitchen into the rest of their homes. Dross also suggests new countertop materials in lieu of granite, such as quartz stone or binding crushed recyclable glass underneath a

solid, smooth surface for those seeking green alternatives. Underfoott butt nott underrated M. Grace Sielaff of M. Grace Designs Inc. envisions rich-looking herringbone-patterned hardwood floors in an ebony oak finish — paying attention to board thickness and giving special consideration to products that meet industry LEED requirements. For a green touch, Frederick suggests hardwood

flooring from reclaimed wood or sustainably grown and harvested sources. To add warmth, Marta Cullen of Dream Interiors suggests round rugs — the bigger, the better. Thingss are e definitely looking g up According to Janet Davidsen of Details in Design Inc., homeowners are casting their eyes upward. The ceiling will be embellished and noticed more as the "fifth wall," and may be painted or architecturally

enhanced to play more of a focal point in a space. Sielaff also suggests homeowners consider a painted metallic ceiling with a large, eye-catching chandelier. Green n continuess to o be keen According to Kathy Hoffman of Susan Fredman Design Group, products and materials such as bronze, copper, clay, cotton, linen and hemp — which are environmentally friendly, contribute to healthy indoor air quality, and can be repurposed or recycled at the end of their lifespan — will be in high demand. Vollf adds that using such natural textures as hemp, jute, organic cotton, recycled polyester, bamboo fiber, organic wool and linen, and soy silk will help keep it simple but still green. Forr Flatt Screens and Walll Mounts, There’s No Such Thing As Too Slim

S

lim is "in" ... and not just for people watching their weight. Flat screen TVs and the wall mounts that turn the TVs into decorator showpieces seem to grow sleeker and slimmer every year. And when it comes to viewing technology, thinner not only looks better, it has practical advantages, too. Yes, ultra-slim flat screens may cost you a few more dollars initially, but in the long run will probably provide you with enough user satisfaction to justify the extra expense. And don't forget that prices for standard flat screens dropped precipitously in just a few years after the products entered the marketplace, so it's likely prices for slim mod-

els will follow suit. Here are a few reasons why you should go trim and slim when buying a flat screen and wall mount: Aesthetic c appeal If you bought a flat screen TV in 2006, it may still work well but it probably takes up quite a bit of space on your TV stand or — if you wall-mounted it — sticks out into the room considerably. Older flat screens tended to be several inches thick and could appear bulky, even when mounted high on the wall. Today's slimmer styles may be just an inch or two thick, and ultra-slim models can be less than an inch thick. Less bulk means the TV looks better, whether it's stand- or wall-

mounted. And new superslim full-motion wall mounts like Sanus' VisionMount VLF311 Super Slim, provide all the advantages and conveniences of wallmounting a flat screen, but without adding a lot of bulk to the TV's profile. The mounts offer a full range of motion courtesy of fingertip-tilt technology, but place flat screens 36 to 65 inches in size just 1.25 inches from the wall. Safety y factor The weight of flat screens can be deceptive. Even older models look so sleek that it's easy to underestimate their weight. But all TVs tend to be heavy, and, if not properly secured to the wall or a TV stand, can tip over,

posing an injury risk to people and pets in the household. Less bulk means slim flat screens are a bit lighter than their thicker counterparts. Remember, however, that it's imperative to properly secure all TVs, including slim flat screens, in order to ensure they're safe — and enjoyable — for everyone in the home. Efficiency Manufacturers have been improving the efficiency of flat screens since the TVs emerged on the home market. Virtually any flat screen — whether plasma or LCD — that you purchase in 2011 is sure to be more energy-efficient

In the home building profession, there are new building codes every three years, in addition to new energy, fire, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes, all of which come with countless upgrades. There are statewide, county, municipal and city codes. Professional home builders and remodelers have to be on top of these and take them into consideration when building your new home.

Many keep abreast of new rules,

product advancements and changing technology by attending the annual International Builders’ Show.

Because buying a new home is such a huge investment, one that you will live with for many years, it makes sense to have it built by someone who knows the latest codes, as well as someone who knows what the newest materials and techniques are, where to get them, and how to use them. Each year there are hundreds of new products available to make your home better and your life easier. Many residential construction industry professionals keep abreast of new rules, product advancements and changing technology by attending the annual International Builders’ Show. More than 50,000 of the industry’s top professionals — builders, remodelers, architects and suppliers — attend the IBS, which is scheduled for Jan. 12-

15 in Orlando, Fla. One of the largest professional trade shows in the country, the IBS is a weeklong learning experience consisting of around 200 seminars covering everything from housing trends to new products and services to the latest installation techniques. In additional to the education sessions, about 1,000 manufacturers and suppliers display their products across approximately 500,000 net square feet of exhibit space during a four-day trade show. During Green Day at IBS, manufacturers showcase their newest energy- and water-efficient appliances and products and there are classes for green project management, design trends and building science. The federal Department of Energy’s 20 college Solar Decathlon teams also display models of the solar-powered homes they’ll be building on the National Mall this fall. IBS is just one of the many programs, certifications and on-going educational efforts that professional home builders and remodelers undertake to be able to provide you with the best products and services available when it comes to your home. For more information on professional home builders and remodelers in Hawaii, go to www.bi ahawaii.org. HAWAIIRENOVATION tect carpet from wear and tear.

Redoing the Keiki Room with Cartoon Characters I f it’s time to turn your baby's nursery into a domain fit for a big boy or girl, you may be wondering how to redo the room in a style they’re sure to love — and that won't cost you a bundle. After all, there's a good chance you'll be doing it all over again in a few years when their tastes change again. The secret to redoing a child's room successfully and cost effectively is pretty much the same secret designers use to redo adult rooms on the cheap — paint, accessories, smart design touches and an understanding of what the room's occupants already love. Parents poised to plunge into kids' room renovations, have an extra advantage that adult room designers don't have — the love all kids seem to share for certain cartoon characters. You can cost-effectively pay homage to your child’s favorite characters by focusing on three key areas of the room:

1.. Walls. Paint is one of the easiest design elements to change, and painting a room is well within the capabilities of most do-it-yourselfers. And by the time they're able to voice their opinion about their room, most kids know what colors they like — and don’t — so you can engage your child in the redesign process by letting him or her make some color choices. Another way to choose a room color is to identify a favorite piece of artwork and draw color inspiration from it. Consider placing a Disney wall mural on one wall of

your child’s room and painting the other three walls with colors found in the mural scene. You can find wall murals that feature characters from such Disney favorites as “Toy Story 3,” “Cars,” “Winnie the Pooh” and “Disney Princess” at www.muralsyourway.com. The murals can be customized for size and to include your child's name, photo or any image. And, they’re reusable, so if one child outgrows the look, you can easily remove the mural and reuse it in another child's room later on. 2..

Fabrics.

You’ve

probably seen bed sets that feature popular cartoon characters, and a comforter festooned with your daughter's favorite princess is sure to please her. But don't overlook other fabrics in the room that could help you complete the room’s look at little cost. Drapes in a color that complements the bed linens can make the room pop. For example, if your daughter adores her Tinker Bell bed sheets, look for curtains (a light sheer will be feminine and allow in lots of light) in a light green that matches the character's dress. If your

son is a big Buzz Lightyear fan, consider curtains that have an outer space theme. Next, look down. If your home has hardwoods in the bedrooms,

3.. Accessories.. Just as the right accessories can turn a so-so outfit into a winner, accessories in a room can add the finishing touch. You'll have no trouble finding a plethora of cartoon characterthemed items, from SpongeBob alarm clocks to Scooby Doo night lights. Be sure to look for items that are useful as well as decorative. For example, accent pillows look great on the bed and can do double-duty as comfy cushions when kids sit on the floor to read or play.

an accent rug can underscore the room's theme and provide a warm spot for cold feet on winter mornings. Or, if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, an area rug can help pro-

What to Expect During

Roof Replacement

H

aving your roof replaced is a big undertaking. Not only does it affect your schedule and your home, but it also has the potential of disturbing your neighbors. While this is not so much a factor if your home is large and on an acre of land, for homes that are in town, the disturbance can be much more palpable. If you have never had your roof replaced and are considering having it done, here are some of the things you can expect during the replacement. Consultation The first thing that you can expect with a roof replacement is a consultation with a few different roofing contractors. You will need to get written estimates so that you can compare prices, time frames and the work that will be done. It is very important to take this step seriously and solicit as many consultations as you need until you find someone who is not only knowledgeable and experienced, but who also makes you feel comfortable with his work. Once you accept a contract, you will be given dates for when the replacement will occur. This is usually a ballpark figure, as opposed to dates set in stone, because rain delays invariably occur. However, be wary of the contractor who keeps pushing off your job, even when the rains have been non-existent. Do not be afraid to ask them when the work will be completed and call them if you feel you are being put off. The Job Depending on the size of your roof and what needs to be done, the job may take any12 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JAN. 2, 2011

where from a day to a week. Larger roofs with a variety of heights and angles will obviously take more time than smaller, less complicated roofs. On the first day of the job, most roofing contractors will hire a dumpster that will be placed in your yard, driveway or the street area in front of your home. Contractors may also cover your shrubs and plants with drop cloths to prevent them from damage should old roofing material fall on them. It is a good idea to ask them if they will be covering your plants, so that you can do this ahead of time should it not be part of their prep work. You should also park your cars away from the dumpster and work area. On the first day, the roofers will be pulling up shingles and tossing them into the dumpster. There may be the sounds of power tools depending on the type of roof you currently have and how it is attached to your rafters. Murakami Roofing Service is based out of Kaneohe, and it specializes in residential and light commercial roofing — both full re-roof and partial re-roof. The company also specializes in rooftop coating to help cool down your house, and has the ability to replace and repair dry-rot, and termite-eaten roofs prior to installing the roof top.
