Lost in your Quest for Solar Power?
W
ith so many solar contractors and sales representatives out there, there’s a lot of information and misinformation solar shoppers are receiving. First and foremost, your decision should be based on the company you choose to provide your photovoltaic (PV) needs. The most important thing to determine is: Will the company I choose fulfill its promises to me and my family, and honor its warranty if anything goes wrong? Researching a company’s history, rating with the BBB, and length of time in business will tell a shopper how reputable the company is. A warranty is only as good for as long as the company has been in business. Another factor to consider: Is this company providing jobs for local residents and are they buying their supplies locally? Mainland companies are here to make a profit and please investors while PV systems can be sold. HECO and its subsidiaries limit the amount of PV power going back into the grid in each area of the islands. Once an area has reached these limits, HECO will not allow further installations. What will happen to your warranty and service when Mainland companies cannot satisfy their investors because the PV market has become fully saturated? The current hot-selling topic in the PV world is panel selection.
Let Poncho’s be your guide
Where do you want to buy your panels from — America, Korea, Japan, China? While the panels from all these countries are good, choosing a reputable manufacturer is always the way to go. Research how long the companies have been making panels and read their warranties. All PV panels basically come with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty, but there are differences in what the manufacturer warrants and how efficient the panels will be after 25 years. A manufacturer in China, for example, could have a problem with all their panels 10 years down the road. What will stop them from closing up shop and reopening under a different name, leaving thousands stranded with faulty panels? While innovation and technology are important to every industry, it’s important to choose your panels from a reputable company that will back their warranty. Locally owned and operated, Pon-
cho’s Solar Services offers products from established companies like Solar World, Kyocera, Samsung, Sanyo and Sharp while still keeping an eye on emerging technologies and companies.
panel produced under Standard Test Condition (STC) rating, which is what HECO uses to determine the size of your system. There are other rating systems out there to compare panels. Make sure these are rated from an independent source. The Tier rating system is completely the opinion of the manufacturer that uses it. The two most important numbers in comparing solar PV systems are, 1) AC kWh output/year and 2) the cost. Whichever complete system can give you the most yearly output at the best price is the system to choose. Another option to consider is to go completely off the power grid. With the advances in inverter technology and a battery storage system, it’s possible to
eliminate your power bill completely and be energy independent. This option, however, can be 30 to 50 percent higher than a grid-tie system depending on your family’s needs. As a bridge between a grid-tied system and going completely offgrid, homeowners purchasing a new grid-tie system of 4 KW or higher, Poncho’s Solar Service will provide a Hurricane Kit consisting of two PV panels, battery backup, a refrigerator or freezer and two LED lights. The kits are particularly useful for homeowners in areas with frequent blackouts or have medications that require refrigeration. Homeowners purchasing new grid-tie systems of 2 to 3 KW’s can purchase a Hurricane Kit for half-price. Poncho’s Solar Services can provide knowledgeable, free estimates for all your residential and commercial solar needs state-wide. Call 422-4266 on Oahu or see our website, ponchosso larservices.com for more information. Neighbor Island homeowners can call our electrical partners, Walter’s Electric Inc., at 1855-41SOLAR. Buyers can also shop for panels at Poncho’s showroom, located at 650 Kakoi St. in Honolulu.
What Matters is the Wattage Many homeowners have heard about mono- vs. poly-crystalline panels. The mono-crystalline cell efficiency is higher, but its shape is circular. The poly’s square shaped cells allow for more panel coverage. These minor differences make either panel type equally efficient. The listed wattage is what the

dous impact on your home in terms of functionality, aesthetics and efficiency. Whether they are being used for security or just to conceal a mess, garage doors can highlight the architectural opening of your garage. Most homeowners think of their garage door as simply something that goes up and down to
secure the enclosure. But in actuality, garage doors can greatly improve the look of the home and the value. Today’s garage doors come in a variety of styles and colors to complement the overall theme of the exterior design of the house. Martin Garage Doors’ professional staff help homeowners se-
lect the best door to fit their needs and their budget. Since garage doors can’t be changed as easily as things like paint, it’s wise to invest in a quality garage door that is durable and offers the homeowner peace of mind. Martin Garage Doors come with the best warranty in the industry. “We pride ourselves in our after-sale service, and our customers know that we stand behind our product,” states Thompson. “I love my Martin door system. It’s so quiet it doesn’t even wake the dog,” says Stella Shigawa.
“Our friends have a Martin Door, that’s how we learned about the product. We were so impressed with theirs we had to buy one for our home. The
Ideal Match
Drawing power from the rooftop he word is out and people are flocking to purchase photovoltaic (PV) systems to reduce or eliminate their electrical bills. There are a virtually unlimited amount of products available today for residential applications, and many companies are touting the amount of electricity that their panels produce. This is only part of the equation; once the panels produce electrical power, that power needs to be converted from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) and delivered into
T
your electrical panel. Choosing the right combination of products to produce the most energy can be challenging, but there is one combination that is clearly the best one available now. We call it the “perfect match.” Sanyo panels and Enphase micro inverters are designed for each other, and together they truly perform better than any other product that is currently available. We have known for a while now that this combination delivered the most power to a typical household, and we have been able to compare systems through remote monitoring, but we have never had our system mounted on the same roof, with the same exact conditions until recently. A customer called to request that we add more PV panels to her
roof. She had purchased a system from another vendor approximately a year before. The company provided her with 10 solar panels and micro inverters. She was told that this was the highest DC watt panel she could purchase with a micro inverter. As a result, she has averaged a little less than 1 kWh per panel per day. This combination produces on average 250 kWh a month, or a reduction of $62.50 from her electric bill. This left her with an average monthly electric bill of $110.00. We suggested that she add eight of our Sanyo panels with the “Perfect Match” Enphase micro inverters. This second system (with two less panels) has been producing an average of 1.3 kilowatts a day,
312 kWh per month, or $78 per month in savings. Our “Perfect Match” of products is delivering over 32 percent more power per panel than the other products. This translates to $186 a year more, per panel! A typical residential system consists of anywhere between 10 and 30 panels, which means our “Perfect Match” will potentially produce $1,860 to $5,580 more in annual savings over any of the other systems currently available. These other systems may produce more watts per panel on your roof, but they deliver substantially less kilowatt hours to your electrical system, where it really matters. lems. In adults, lead poisoning can lead to hypertension and high blood pressure. Pregnant women run the risk of passing the poison on to their unborn child. It is important that you find a remodeler who is trained in lead-safe work practices rather than try to do the work yourself. Not only that, but it’s the law: Contractors working in pre-1978 homes must be lead-paint certified and must follow these lead-safe practices whether or not there are children in the home — unless the homeowner can certify that the house is lead-paint free.
Whatt are e Lead-Safe Work k Practices?? The EPA has a free brochure on its website (www.leadfreekids.org) called “Renovate Right” that provides guidance to homeowners and contractors about remodeling safely to minimize lead dust exposure. EPA LeadSafe Certified Renovators have been equipped to use lead test kits, educate consumers about the dangers of lead, and use prescribed lead-safe work practices. Your certified contractor should also give you this brochure to familiarize you with specific work practices, including these procedures:
1. Containing the work area so that dust and debris do not escape. Warning signs will be posted to keep visitors away from the area, and heavy-duty plastic and tape are used to seal off doors and heating and cooling system vents and to cover the floors and any furniture that cannot be moved. 2. Minimizing dust. There is no way to eliminate it, but some paint removal methods create less dust than others. For example, using water to mist areas before sanding or scraping and prying and pulling apart components can reduce dust. It’s also prohibited to use open flame
burning or torching; sanding, grinding, planing, needle gunning, or blasting with power tools and equipment not equipped with a shroud and high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter vacuum attachment; or using a heat gun at temperatures greater than 1,100 F. 3. Cleaning up thoroughly. When all the work is done, and before taking down any plastic that isolates the work area from the rest of the home, the area will be cleaned with a HEPA vacuum to remove dust and debris on all surfaces, followed by wet mopping with plenty of water. To find a Lead-Safe Certified Renovator or firm near you, go to www. bi ahawaii-org or visit www.epa.gov/lead. Going Solar Today Pays Right Away Purchasing a solar energy system is something most homeowners consider at year-end, when the generous tax incentives of up to 65 percent of a system’s cost become extremely attractive. However, here are just three of the many benefits to installing solar now: 1) Take home more of your paycheck. Homeowners can change their tax withholding status the instant they install a system and take home more money every payday. There’s no need to wait for tax time to realize the value of solar tax incentives. 2) Lock in today’s electricity costs. A solar energy system can virtually eliminate your monthly electric bill and insulate you from unpredictable energy costs. For those who purchase a solar power service system, which replaces your existing electric utility with rooftop solar, you lock in a monthly rate lower than you are paying now. With recent reports forecasting oil prices at $100 per barrel this summer, Hawaii homeowners most likely will see an increased electric bill. 3) Sell power to HECO for income. Beginning this year, homeowners can sell excess solar power back to the utility. So not only can you virtually eliminate your monthly bill, you can actually make money with a new system and accelerate the return on your investment. There are many more reasons to install your solar system today, and RevoluSun can help you understand them all. As Hawaii’s leading solar provider, RevoluSun designed and installed more commercial and residential photovoltaic projects in 2010 than any other company, and we’d like to help you, too. Many trendy wood types are available in surprisingly affordable styles from manufacturers of semi-custom cabinetry. “Today's semi-custom cabinetry gives homeowners access to some of the most desired wood types including cherry, known for its deep reddish tones, and alder, which can lend a rustic or casual feel to a kitchen,” says Cathy Hitz, brand manager for Diamond Cabinets. Recently, Diamond made some of its most popular door styles available in new wood types. For example, the Shiloh door style features a simplistic look and is available in cherry, alder and rustic alder. Reversible Room
‘redos’ for renters
enters face a perennial decorating dilemma: Do you personalize your apartment decor, knowing that when you move out the landlord will likely require you to put everything back the way it was? Or do you live with bare white walls, neutral-toned carpets and homogeneous decor? You may not be able to make major changes — like replacing that bland sand-colored carpet with one in your favorite hue of purple — but you can personalize your rental space with some easy-to-reverse upgrades. While the effort to install, and later remove, these upgrades is small, their impact on your home’s decor can be very big, indeed.
R
Here are a few simple room “redos” that can add pizzazz to your apartment — without creating extra work when it’s time to move out.
Walls Paint is an easy way to switch up the color of a room, but if you paint the walls, be prepared to repaint them back to white before your lease ends. Peel and stick wall decor can be a better option for personalizing a space, while leaving the white walls intact — especially if you opt for high-quality peel and stick wall murals like those offered by MuralsYourWay.com. SmartStick peel and stick wall murals are backed with a patented ad-
hesive that allows you to easily place the material on nearly any surface (walls, windows, even doors), pull it down, reposition it, even move it to a different wall — all without damaging the mural or the wall beneath it. Unlike wall decals or wall stickers, the mural does not rip or wrinkle and can be reused hundreds of times. MuralsYourWay.com carries thousands of murals that can all be printed on SmartStick fabric and customized for size. Log on to www.muralsyourway.com to learn more.
Floors Replacing apartment carpet is usually a big nono. Even if the existing carpet is worn and stained,
unless you strike an agreement with your landlord for replacing it at your own expense, it’s better to simply cover up the carpeting you can’t stand. Fortunately, it’s easy to find decorative throw rugs that will add color and personalization to your space — and help protect neutral-toned carpets from wear, tear and stain-
ing, all of which you may be required to pay for when you move out. You can opt to arrange several smaller carpets in key areas of the room, such as placing a long runner in high-traffic hallways, or a large area rug to anchor furniture groupings in living areas. Or, you can even find a very large rug that covers almost the entire
floor. When it’s time to move out, simply roll up your rugs and go, leaving the carpet beneath looking exactly the way it was when you moved in. Windows Often, apartments will have no window treatments beyond blinds when you move in. You could install your own

ing the windows clear. Or, you could minimize the amount of hardware needed by placing decorative holdbacks (usually used to hold a curtain away from a window at about the midpoint) at the top corners of a window and draping yards of fabric in your favorite color or pattern over the holdbacks. The hold-
backs leave just one hole each in the wall, so wall repair time is significantly less. From reusable wallpaper murals to creative carpet options, it's easy to redecorate your rental — and you won’t have to worry about restoring everything to its original state when your lease is up.

Walker-Moody
Construction:
Paving the Way to a Better Future W
alker-Moody Construction Co. Ltd. has been around for the past 115 years and continues to be a family-owned business that champions the motto, onipaa (pulling together). Walker-Moody is synonymous with many recognizable iconic structures of Hawaii’s landscape, including Honolulu Hale, The Queen’s Medical Center, The Royal Mausoleum, as well as the Arizona Memorial. With the changing times, contractors must specialize and find their niche. Throughout the years, Walker-Moody has done it all, from sidewalks to highrises. Today, however, you can’t be a jack-of-all-trades. With the building products changing all the time, and the rapid change in technology, a contractor’s work force has to be highly skilled and competent in its chosen field. Asphalt maintenance has become a focus for Walker-Moody. The company is a specialist in asphalt maintenance: cleaning, repair, crack-fill, sealcoat, and slurry and chip-seal. Being a daily driver, John Moody saw the 12 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JAN. 9, 2011
need for a higher standard in the pavement maintenance industry in Hawaii. Through research on different products in the market, Moody discovered the superior products of SealMaster. The company has been installing pavement maintenance products since it purchased equipment in 2000. “The infrastructure is an important part of these islands, whether it is the highways or a condominium parking lot,” Moody says. “Paving has been an important part of Hawaii’s history, but in these slow economic times you can’t afford to just rip out and replace. Maintenance is key, but the technology has taken awhile to cross the ocean. Whatever the problem, there is a fix, most of which can be done in budget. “We are another tool on the tool-belt for the state, counties and associations.” Walker-Moody is an authorized installer of SealMaster Hawaii products and has the latest technology and training. It provides decades of experience, an extraordinary team, and can deliver ontime and on-budget projects. Asphalt maintenance work for Walker-Moody is now approaching 8 million square feet.
