Designing with Rhythm

G

reat design has to have rhythm to make it a visual feast for the eyes. This was never more evident to me than during a recent project for clients Stephen and Dale, who wanted to spice up their boudoir as a 25th-wedding-anniversary present to one another. The couple, who live in an otherwise beautiful home, had a bleak master bedroom. The Lshaped room, with its matching bedroom suite and beige carpeting, was boxy and boring. It was definitely missing the element of rhythm and, as a result, felt awkward and uninviting. Stephen and Dale are vibrant people, and they desired a room that reflected their 25 years together. I wanted to give them an eclectic and diverse space, so I set out to utilize the principle of design rhythm: the visual repetition of elements such as pattern, shape and color. I kicked off the project by deciding on the elements I would

use to create the rhythm, including a palette of charcoal, red and white; materials like wood, Lucite and mirror; and a range of geometrical patterns. I then divided the L-shaped room into two areas: a bedroom and a lounge. I painted most of the space light linen except for a stunning feature wall that was painted in a bold currant red. Against this wall I placed a king-sized bed with a striking carved headboard of white plaster panels. For the linens, I chose a charcoal and white duvet with a geometrical pattern, a creamy bed skirt and a heap of red, white and charcoal pillows. Beneath the bed, I used a creamy, patterned area rug. Because I made this bed the room’s focal point, my challenge was to make everything else in the space relate back to it.

I flanked the bed with two mismatched but complementary end tables: an oak vanity table/desk with a black baroque mirror on one side, and a mirrored table on the other. Next to the bed, I created a sitting area with a charcoal armchair and a metal side table. These sit along a wall of windows, and the whole look is softened by cream-and-currant drapes. I then introduced an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary furniture: a black-and-white armoire in African mahogany; a black modern console/dresser

The eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary furniture spices up a boudoir.

with a TV, and oneof-a-kind artisanal pieces. I continued the gorgeous visual rhythm from the bedroom through to the adjoining lounge area by bringing in a dove-colored, textured sectional sofa, a light wood geometrical side table and a large wall mirror. I also put up a picture gallery consisting of framed photos and colored paper that picks up on the bedroom’s color scheme. To brighten up the space, I chose some striking wood and Lucite lamps, and a spectacular geometrical clear-glass fixture adds flair to the sitting area.

Accents and accessories such as metal vases, wooden baskets and patterned pillows serve to complete the look. The room now speaks a little language of its own, with all of the rhythmic elements unifying an otherwise eclectic space. It’s surely the ideal place to showcase the couple’s tastes as they head into another 25 years of wedded bliss. Interior decorator Candice Olson is host of HGTV's “Candice Tells All.” For more ideas, information and show times, visit www.hgtv.com/candice-tellsall/show/index.html.

ne of the pioneers in Hawaii’s solar industry, Poncho’s Solar Service, has been installing solar water heating systems in Hawaii since 1988. Now also a leading photovoltaic contractor, the company has announced the availability of a unique new power generating and storage system designed to operate critical appliances during power outages. “With hurricane season approaching, we have been installing the system we call our ‘Hurricane Kit’ in homes throughout Hawaii,” said Poncho’s co-owner Terrie Safranca. “We have one in our own home that can generate power for refrigeration and lighting when power failures occur. It’s a relief to know that all your food won’t be spoiled and you won’t have to resort to candles and flashlights to read or find your way around the house. “As for cooking, you can always make use of a gas grill or fire up a barbecue. If you want to be able additionally to continue using radios, TVs, and computers, the Hurricane Kit package that includes an DC/AC inverter might be the one to choose. Of course, the more the package con-

tains, the more it will cost ... the good news is that it’s eligible for state and federal tax credits.” According to estimator Kirby Mack, the Hurricane Kits, after tax credits, cost as little as $2,700. The minimum system, Hurricane Kit, includes a freezer/refrigerator, two direct current lights, two 135-watt solar

panels, a storage battery and a charge controller. The larger systems include more of the same plus an inverter. “We expect this kit to be in great demand because it includes the essentials at a very reasonable price,” Mack said. “The refrigerator/freezer and lights are powered by batteries that store the energy produced by the photovoltaic panels. The refrigerator freezer can be controlled to maintain temperatures equivalent to those in a deep freeze or standard refrigeration unit. The lights are powered by direct current produced by the system.” Terrie Safranca noted that, with the photovoltaic industry expanding by leaps and bounds, it’s important for the consumer to be sure they are working with a reliable company that is on top of all the latest advance-

ments in the technology. Additionally, the company should be one that will not only sell and install the system, but also will maintain it and be available to add panels as needed. “When someone contacts us regarding either a solar water heating system or photovoltaic system or both, the first thing we do is take a look at their electric bill and find out what their needs are. Our estimator checks the size and condition of the roof to determine the placement of the panels. We also need to establish the capacity of the existing electrical system. “What we find is that many of the homes already have solar water heating systems, many of them installed by Poncho’s, and so are taking advantage of the energy savings and tax credits available. With both a solar water heating system and a photovoltaic system, which can supply electric power for all

household needs, it’s possible to reduce an electric bill to the minimum service charge from the electric company. “We have many customers who are paying only the minimum service fee. Poncho’s has helped numerous households throughout Hawaii reach that goal.” Safranca pointed out that anyone building a new home or remodeling should incorporate solar power installations in their plans and factor the cost into their budget. “With today’s economic uncertainties, escalating electricity costs, and the potential of natural disasters such as hurricanes, tropical storms, typhoons and earthquakes, it makes sense to be prepared. Power outages essentially bring our normal daily activities to a standstill. We advise anyone who is not already ‘powered up’ to contact us for a no-obligation assessment of what

their up-front costs would be for both minimum and maximum capacity systems. They can then take that figure to their financial adviser or accountant to find out how they can benefit from the existing state and federal tax credits and whether any rebates currently apply,” Safranca said. Poncho’s Solar Service has an A-Plus rating from the Better Business Bureau and has been named “Top Solar Installer.”

It’s Time to take

the Heat Out of Your Roof W

ith summer already here, homeowners are bracing for the long, hot days ahead. Recent studies show that by lowering the temperature of your roof surface, or your attic, you can cool down your interior by up to 12 degrees. There are two good reasons to cool down your roof: The first reason is obvious — a cool home is a happy home. It’s difficult to concentrate when you are feeling uncomfortable in the oppressive afternoon heat. Those who still need to run their air conditioners will happily find that their A/C bills are about 30 percent less. A cool roof or attic can pay for itself in as little as two-and-a-half years. The second good reason is less

LEAKMASTER well-known by the average homeowner. Your material warranty from the roofing manufacturer is dramatically shortened if you don’t ventilate your attic. Why? Because an overheated roof will curl up and fail much quicker than a cool roof. Large roofing manufacturers, such as CertainTeed and Owens Corning, will severely reduce their warranties if you don’t ventilate your attic. So what are the most populars methods of cooling down a roof? Homeowners with flat roofs, or sloped roofs without attics, usually choose to put on a cool roof coating, such as Hawaiian SunGuard with its

Ceramic Titanium HeatShield. Those who have sloped roofs with attics will often have an attic vent installed to let out the hot air. The two most popular types are Solar Attic Vents and Ridge Vent. The Solar vents qualify for 65 percent tax credits, so your average cost, per vent installed by LeakMaster Roofing, is only about $685 after the credits. Its best-selling models are on sale for the month of June. You can call 591-1900 for a free estimate or visit the company at 575-G Cooke St. in Kakaako to compare the attic vents and roof coatings up close. Instead of suffering inside your hot, stuffy home, you now have a reason to celebrate the sunny summer season. Lucky you live Hawaii!

Now, because the company truly wants to make its location a one-stop shop for all consumers, it has added lines of cabinets and award-winning LED lighting products to its ensemble of building and renovation materials. Although there are other LED lights out on the market, Hawaii Home Expo did the research and concluded that it is important to know the brand that you are buying. HAWAII HOME EXPO found its LEDs have the highest Lumen efficacy per watt, which allows the units to maintain light output far better over the 50,000-hour lifetime. Repairing is Recycling A

t Reliable Parts you can get more than just parts for your major appliances. There are many accessories such as water filters, tools, barbecue sauces, countertop appliances, tail-gate grills, Phiten products and lots of cleaners. Reliable Parts carries a wide variety of items and products that are unique and hard to find in Hawaii. Although Reliable Parts has cleaners for just about everything in your home, let’s talk about some of the cleaners that are made to help you clean and maintain your appliances. Recently, front-load

RELIABLE PARTS

washers have become popular. One common complaint is that the washer develops an odor due to the buildup of dirt and detergent, particularly in hard-to-clean areas. This along with the low water usage in these machines and the tight seal are the reason for the odors in the tub. Reliable Parts carries a product to help solve this problem — it’s called Affresh Washer Cleaner. The leading manufacturers recommend using Affresh Washer Cleaner once a month to battle the causes of this odor. There is also a kit that comes with

what Affresh calls the “Grit Grabber.” This is a specially formulated cloth that is made to remove the residue on the rubber door seal. Also available from Affresh are the stainless steel cleaner, a cooktop cleaner, and a kitchen and appliance cleaner. The stainless steel cleaner removes fingerprints, smudges and residue while leaving behind a streak-free and polished shine. The cooktop cleaner cuts through the tough baked-on residue and is safe for all glass, ceramic and porcelain cooktops. Use the kitchen and appliance cleaner to cut through the residue of everyday spills. This product is great for cleaning the inside of refrigerators and

microwave ovens, or any other non-porous surface where rinsing may be inconvenient. And for the eco-conscious, Reliable Parts also has a new product line called Ecosential by Smart Choice. Available from Ecosential are the stainless steel cleaner and cooktop cleaner. Like the Affresh products, these two products are made to clean the residue that forms from everyday use. And they do this while being formulated to be chemically biodegradable. For more information, call our Waipio location at 6762664 or our Honolulu store at 847-3271, or visit us online at www.partshawaii .com or www.reliableparts .com.

Converting your carport into a secure garage MARTIN GARAGE

before

I

n most homes, carports or garages are an essential feature. Many homes in Hawaii were built with carports to function solely as shelter for their vehicles and do not provide protection from the elements. Carports generally lack the security that most homeowners desire and aren’t nearly as useful as garages. Converting your carport into a garage will not only secure your property and valuables, but can increase the

value of your home if done properly. Here are a few things you should consider before converting your carport into a more secure and functional addition to your home: Usage and needs. Will it be solely for secured parking? Will you need storage space? Will you be using the garage for other purposes? Size. Does your existing carport meet your usage size needs? Is there enough height?

after Building codes and area regulations. What are the local building codes? Are permits required? What do you need to ensure your garage is legal? All of the above are important factors when considering your carport conversion. Martin Garage Door Hawaii is a licensed general contractor experienced in carport conversions with the expertise to complete the entire process from planning, drawing, blueprints, application approval to obtain-

ing permits from the county building department, as well as homeowners, associations when necessary. We strive to provide the best possible results for the client based on their wants and budget. The homeowner can have a garage and a new Martin Garage Door along with the peace of mind that their possessions are secure while enhancing the beauty and value of their home. A Name to Trust

Roofing Business

in the

T

he Murakami family has been meeting the roofing needs of Hawaii for two generations. Clifford Murakami started out in the roofing business in 1976. The oldest son Clinton Murakami has for the past five years been owner and operator of Murakami’s Roofing Service. Covering all types of roofing and waterproofing, Murakami’s is primari-

ly a residential roofing contractor that specializes in single-family homes. They install all types of roofing material that you would find on residential roofs. Asphalt shingles that range from the standard 30year shingle to the more durable 50-year are very cost-effective and are mildew and algae resistance. They also offer metal roofing in various configura-

tions like standing seam panels or aluminum shakes or shingles. For low slope roofs, the standard torch on roll roofing has been an industry standard for years, and they offer it in 12-, 15- and 20-year warranties. Also within the past few years they have been offering cooling solutions for your roof. They can apply reflective elastomeric roof

coatings that greatly reduce roof surface temperatures. Attic fans and ridge vents are installed as a way to reduce heat build-up in your attic space and increase the life span of your roofing material. Murakami’s also will repair termite and dry rot damage to your roof’s structure. They will do

roof repairs that range from replacing wind-damaged shingles and minor leak repairs to partial reroofs. As our economic climate gets worse, Murakami’s Roofing stresses that consumers do their homework before choosing a roofing contractor and a roof system. First, make sure your contractor is properly insured and has a good rating with the Better Business Bureau. Having good credentials will give consumers a better level of

comfort to know that their contractor is competent. Second, make sure you know your options, in grades of materials and types of installations. For example, when installing asphalt shingles there are different grades (30-to-50year) and you can choose to remove existing roofing or go over the existing roofing. Third, will your project be supervised and will you be kept informed on the progress if any unforeseen problems come up? It’s a good idea to prepare as well as possible when making a purchase that can have a positive effect on the value of your home.

How to enjoy the suite life

FROM PAGE 13

al continuity for potential buyers.

Let the sun shine in A skylight is an upgrade that is both luxurious and practical. Adding one to a master suite is a great way to bring rejuvenating natural light into your home, reduce the need for electric lighting and lower your power bills. No-leak skylights from skylight maker Velux, also eliminate one of the traditional concerns about skylights; when properly installed they are no more likely to leak than any other type of quality window. Venting skylights, especially in a bath, can also provide passive ventilation to carry odors and moisture out of the room. Privacy is also a plus with skylights; they admit natural light without providing an interesting view to your neighbors.

If your master suite is on the first floor, you may think you can’t do a skylight. Tubular skylights, such as Sun Tunnels, can deliver natural light into spots where a traditional skylight won’t work — such as on the ground floor of a multi-level home. If you’re not sure how a skylight will fit into your master suite, consider downloading the free Velux Skylight Planner App, available for iPhones, iPods, iPads and Android phones. The app helps you see what a skylight might look like in your home. Visit www.veluxusa.com to learn more.

Electric venting skylights in bedrooms and baths can be operated by remotes and provide not only natural light and a dramatic view to the sky, but also passive ventilation and privacy.

Lavish the bath A great bathroom is important anywhere in your house, but it’s vital to creating a luxurious master suite. Fortunately, the bath is one room where it’s easy to make a big impact with

not much money. After you’ve repainted the room, consider adding touches like decorative frames around bathroom mirrors, upgraded light fixtures and decadent accessories such as plush towels

f kitchen and bathroom remodels are the gold and silver medalists in the Olympics of home renovation, then a master suite remodel is a very respectable bronze. But while the superstars of the renovation world may reap more in terms of resale value, a master suite remodel can be more rewarding for your soul. After all, we spend a lot of time in the bedroom — and we’re doing more than just sleeping. For many Americans, the master suite has become a refuge, the area of the house where we can relax and put the day’s

stresses and cares out of our minds. Anything we do to make that small (or large) suite of rooms more appealing can help enhance our overall enjoyment of our homes. While adding a master suite can deliver a return on investment of about 63 percent at resale (according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2011 Cost vs. Value Report), few of us have the budget for such a sweeping renovation. Fortunately, a few costeffective moves can boost a master suite’s appeal exponentially. Here are a

any room. Restive, comforting hues can set a relaxing, welcoming tone in a master suite. And since these shades also tend to be neutral, repainting a master bedroom and bath can enhance resale value as well. It’s OK to paint the bedroom and bath different colors, but keep in mind they should be harmonious and complementary — not jarringly different from Sun Tunnel tubular skylights in each other. baths welcome diffused sunlight While you’re and, with a light kit, serve as repainting, don’t a 24-hour source of illumination. forget to do the walk-in closet, if few master suite remod- your suite has one. onging to update your home, but short on time and money? You’re not alone. Remodeling experts report that whole-house remodels have declined in recent years — but don’t throw in the towel just yet. Instead of focusing on every room, focus on smaller areas where you spend a lot of time, like the bathroom. “Bathroom renovations are one of the most popular projects with homeowners, but not everyone has the same needs or budget,” says renowned home improvement expert Danny Lipford. “Luckily, cosmetic updates can be quick, inexpensive and easy enough for anyone to do.” With a few days and minimal budget, you can give your bathroom an instant facelift that will be fashionable and functional.

uilding and remodeling on a budget doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the quality or integrity of your project. At the upcoming Homeworks Build New Or ReDo seminar, a free presentation slated for Tuesday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Homeworks Construction showroom, designers, builders, and suppliers will explain how you can minimize your initial investment based on reviewing all the options before making choices. According to Homeworks Construction president Marshall Hickox, who is serving as 2011 president of the Hawaii Remodelers Council, a new custom home, addition or renovation project generally starts with client meetings where the scope of the work, client “wish list,” budget, financing options, and a timetable are discussed. “There are literally hundreds of options in construction materials, finishes, appliances and fixtures,” Hickox said. “At the seminars, we are able to give a broad overview of what is involved. After the formal presentations, the attendees are invited to sit down with the speakers for one-on-one consultations. If they decide they want to move forward with their project, they can then make an appointment to meet with a Homeworks project coordinator at our office. At this point, the client should have an idea of what they can spend. Once we meet at the site we will be able to bid the job accurately.” Hickox pointed out that the Homeworks Showroom on the first floor of the Homeworks Building at 2111 S. Beretania St. showcases a wide range of samples of carpet, countertops, flooring, window coverings, cabinets, 16 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JUNE 12, 2011

hardware, lighting and fixtures, as well as large appliances. Homeworks designers review the samples with attendees at the seminars, as well as at private meetings later by appointment when comparative prices can be discussed and selections made.

From

“If the project is a new luxury custom, we would show samples and give prices for such finishes as marble and granite. If we’re observing a tight budget, there are a variety of solid surfaces that are attractive, durable and much less expensive. As for flooring, prefinished and engineered wood are good alternatives to pricey hardwoods. “Often clients who want to remodel an existing home to modernize and add rooms find that with proper planning and creative use of existing space they can achieve their goal without greatly expanding the size of the house, which would increase construction costs. Sometimes there are zoning constraints that would prevent expansion. In these kinds of scenarios we can often make use of existing lanai or yard space or reconfigure interior spaces to cre-

ate an additional bedroom and bath or enlarge a kitchen. “Today, many families are creating multigenerational homes in our older neighborhoods either by remodeling an existing home or demolishing it to build new. Once we meet at the job site and inspect the house and the premises, we can give them prices for both — sometimes it’s more cost-effective to build a new custom home than to remodel an old one.” Homeworks has completed hundreds of renovations, additions and new custom homes throughout Oahu and can provide a prospective client with photos and refer them to the website, homeworkshawaii.com, for a visual tour of projects. For more information or to make reservations for the free seminar, call Homeworks Construction at 955-2777. Also, stop in at the Homeworks booth #170, located at the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show at Blaisdell Center this weekend.
