s it time to enhance your home? If the first response that comes to your mind is “no,” then you don’t have to worry. However, if your mind wandered at all to an old appliance you’ve wanted to replace, a leaky faucet, a running toilet, or weathered floors and countertops, then you’re probably ready for a change. At Hawaii Home Expo, we’re here to help you consider all facets of your project and make sure that you do it right. The professional and knowledgeable staffs of Marblehaus Hawaii and T. Oki Trading are now under one roof and can assist you with all your home renovation needs. So why come to Hawaii Home Expo? You cannot only have style, but many new fixtures have features that cut down on the water consumption by up to 30 percent. Hawaii Home Expo can also help you achieve the look you want and add value to your home. Nothing revitalizes the look of a home more than changing the flooring, but natural stone flooring can add tremendous value to your home. Kitchen remodels can add tens of thousands of dollars to your resale value. You can view appliances, flooring, and counters all side by side. Next to kitchens, bathrooms are next in terms of added value. And with so many fixtures, counters and tiles to choose from under one roof, Hawaii Home Expo remains the best option.
The company also has a vast supply of outdoor living items such as Jacuzzis, grills, flagstone and river rocks for landscaping for customers to choose from. Stone, cement, brick, and tile all can be porous and require cleaning and sealants. The company’s exclusive Dry Treat line of sealants provides maximum protection and 15-year warranties. Finally, Hawaii Home Expo carries Cambris USA quartz – the perfect choice for counter tops because of its maintenance-free beauty. No sealants are necessary with this product, and cleanup requires warm water and mild soap only. To learn more about Hawaii Home Expo, visit the company’s office at 2933 Koapaka St. in Honolulu. Built with sustainable design elements, the dog house will be auctioned off to the highest bidder through a blind auction, with proceeds benefiting Hawaiian Humane Society. “We wanted to develop a display in our booth that showcases some of the
new trends in sustainable design and construction,” said Evan Fujimoto, Graham Builders president. “And in keeping with the spirit of sustainability, create something that could then be used after the show was over. A dog house seemed like the per-
fect solution, and it just makes sense to donate the proceeds to the Hawaiian Humane Society.” “We’re thrilled that Graham Builders is supporting us in this way,” said Pamela Burns, Hawaiian Humane Society president and CEO. “Hawaiian Humane Society and the animals we rescue, protect and care for depend on contributions. It is wonderful when a local business thinks of us, and this beautiful dog gazebo is a fun and unique way to raise funds for animals.” The modern-style home

The Benefits of
Photovoltaics Alternative Electric can help Hawaii’s homeowners make a very wise investment
P
hotovoltaics is creating quite a buzz among Hawaii homeowners. Also known as PV, photovoltaics is a form of solar. “But instead of heating your water, it actually produces electricity,” explains Chad Matsumoto, who co-owns Alternative Electric with Bronson Apana. Although the upfront costs may be high, there are many benefits that make PV a wise overall investment, and Matsumoto offers these examples. Lower monthly electric bill. This may be the most recognizable benefit. Alternative Electric offers free consultations and estimates on how many PV panels are needed. A company representative visits a home and looks at its roof design, electrical set up, electrical consumption and a homeowner’s budget before recommending a suitable system. Tax credits. Although the initial cost for PV is high, many people may overlook the tax credits. State and federal solar energy income tax credits can reimburse up to 65 percent of the cost of a 12 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JAN. 23, 2011
solar system. Preserves the natural environment and improves air quality. Hawaii’s electricity is mainly generated from fossil fuels. By producing electricity with a PV system, Hawaii can decrease oil demand and green house gas emissions. Investment purposes. A PV system is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. After tax credits, the payback on a PV system is approximately six to eight years, and maybe even sooner as the cost of electricity rises. After the system pays for itself, a homeowner can enjoy 17-19 years of virtually maintenance-
free electric production. A PV system also increases the value of a home. It increases equity and it’s a hot seller, according to some Realtors. Alternative Electric designs, installs and maintains solar photovoltaic systems. “We take care of all phases of PV installations, so homeowners get the best quality materials, design and workmanship,” says Matsumoto. “We are also a fullservice electrical contractor offering residential and commercial electrical services as well as photovoltaics.” Hawaii’s year-round sunshine makes it one of the most efficient solar energy sites in the world.
