P

eople travel from far and wide to bask on the beaches of Waikiki, traverse the cool Koolau rain forests and swim with the fishes at Hanauma Bay. So why do we locals opt to vacation elsewhere when we have all of these treasures in our very backyards? Well, because a lot of the time we don’t know such activities exist. Or we’ve grown tired of the same old hiking trails and surf spots. Luckily, there are still new adventures waiting to be discovered each

and every day. Take, for example, kart racing. “Everyone loves it, and the adrenaline rush you get going 0 to 45 (mph) in 3 seconds is unforgettable,” says Warren Cole, co-owner of Podium Raceway Hawaii. Cole and wife Michele joined forces with two other married couples (Neil and Kelly Tsutsui and Mark and Sheree Jeffries) to open Hawaii’s first and only indoor electric kart racing track earlier this year. “When we first opened we had three-hour wait times on the weekends, but now that has calmed

down,” Cole says. While the crowds have settled down a bit, there’s no stopping the fun to be had at this Kapolei attraction. In addition to arcade games and private party rooms, the 44,000-square-foot venue houses a quarter-mile indoor track that is strictly designed to thrill. “The track offers straightaways for the speed junky and various types of corners for the technical aspects of racing,” Cole says. And thanks to the raceway’s 35 high-performance European electric racing karts, as many as 12 drivers can safely compete side-byside in a race against the clock.

“Racing to get my best lap time is a ton of fun!” says Cole. “Racing is not like golf where you have a good day and a bad day; every time you get better and faster, and the adrenalinepumping fun never ends.” Annual trackpass racing license costs $5.95 and is valid for one year from date of purchase. Adult races cost $20 for 14 laps ($25 without trackpass), and junior races for children at least 48 inches tall cost $15 for nine laps ($20 without trackpass). Even when off the track Cole and the rest of the Podium Raceway crew love to try other heart-racing activities,

such as skydiving or taking an underwater shark tour. For fellow daredevils, one activity worth trying is wakeboarding. “Wakeboarding is a cool sport and exciting to learn,” says Cormac O’Carroll, owner of Hawaii Water Sports Center. Located right on the waters of Koko Marina Center (7192 Kalanianaole Hwy.), Hawaii Water Sports Center offers professional instruction in wakeboarding, along with other water activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, scuba diving, water-skiing, snorkeling, and Bumper CONTINUED PAGE 4

on Hawaii’s Magical Isle

T

here’s good reason why Maui is known as Hawaii’s Magical Isle. From mauka to makai, there is a never-ending array of activities that can transform an ordinary day into an amazing adventure. Ziplining is undoubtedly among the Valley Isle’s top pastimes, with many companies catering to thrill-seekers who want to soar over tree tops and race across gulches and gullies. “It really is like no other (experience)! Flying through the air with a bird’s-eye view of Maui more than 650 feet off the ground is truly amazing and an experience not to be missed,” says Karen Martois of Flyin Hawaiian Zipline, Maui’s newest ziplining option. Located in the West Maui Mountains, this canopy-top adventure is the longest zipline both in Hawaii and on the Continental U.S., with eight ziplines that cross nine different valleys, seven different ridges and five different climate zones on a 2.5-mile ride from Waipaku to

Maalaea. “We have unparalleled views of both the North and South shores of Maui, as well as Haleakala,” Martois says. “At Flyin Hawaiian, you visit and see things most people never get to.” Rates begin at $135 per person (plus tax). Call 808-463-5786 for reservations or go online to flyinhawaiianzipline.com for more information. Those who want to keep their feet planted on terra firma can still take in the island’s amazing natural scenery with a hike to the top of Haleakala, a tour through a working farm or a trip to Whalers Village Museum in old Lahaina and the Maui Ocean Center in Wailuku. If all those sea creatures inspire you to head out to the beach, there’s plenty to do out on the water. Snorkeling, whale watching, dolphin searches and something called SNUBA — an experience halfway between snorkeling and scuba — all make for a memorable family staycation. “Trilogy offers a variety of fantastic daily excursions — we have sunset sails, whale

watching, adventure rafting, scuba and land tour of Lanai, both Jeep and escorted van tours,” says LiAnne Coon of Trilogy Excursions. Since 1973 this family-owned and operated company has delighted thousands with some of the best ocean adventures in the state. Trilogy Excursions also is unique in that most crew members are certified naturalists, and it is the only Maui activity company allowed to conduct all-day excursions to Hulopoe Beach Park and Marine Preserve on Lanai. “Trilogy’s exclusive Hale O Manele Pavilion on the grounds of the newly renovated Manele Boat Harbor (on the private island of Lanai) is also available for wedding functions, dinner parties or themed events,” Coon adds. Set sail aboard Maui’s “oldest and most reputable activity company” by calling 808-8745649, or go online to sailtrilogy.com to view a full menu of island excursions. Living Large

on the Big Island

BY KELLI SHIROMA

T

he island of Hawaii — better known as the “Big Island” — is the youngest and most dynamic in the Hawaiian chain, with geographic features ranging from lava-spewing volcanoes to cattle ranches and botanical gardens. Famous for its majestic landmarks, including Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the active Kilauea volcano, the Big Island offers kamaaina a multiplicity of activities to enjoy. Adventure-seeking residents can opt for airborne pursuits such as helicopter or airplane tours, which have become a Big Island signature attraction because of Kilauea’s eruptions. During night flights over the volcano conducted by Island Air, for example, visitors get a bird’s-eye view of the red-hot lava. Thrill-seekers also can embark on zipline tours that allow them to soar over unique terrain, all while being harnessed to a trolley that rides on a zip cable. “Right now, our zipline tour has eight ziplines and there’s one suspension bridge,” says Haaheo Neves, sales manager for Big Island Eco Adventures

(BIEA). “The tour itself is about three hours. In about two months, we should finish our Wikiwiki course, a one-hour tour that has four ziplines.” Many options are available for those seeking on-land adventures such as horseback riding, ATV (all terrain vehicle) tours, hunting for big game or Hummer safari tours. Open-range horseback riding at Ponoholo Ranch, an 11,000-acre cattle ranch located on the Kohala Mountains, is offered by several companies, one of which is Paniolo Adventures. ATV tours offer visitors rides on all terrain vehicles specifically designed for off-road trails, including rain forest and waterfall tours. Hummer Safari tours also are popular, as visitors have the opportunity to explore destinations such as the Kohala Mountain Rainforest. At Parker Ranch, visitors can shoot for a wide variety of game. “Yearly, we have goat hunting, boar hunting and pig hunting,” says Patti Johnson, who helps coordinate the hunting reservations at Parker Ranch. “From Nov. 1 to the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr., that’s wild bird hunting; the month of March is spring turkey hunting.”

Exploring the Big Island can continue beneath the surface. The Big Island is rated as one of the world’s top diving destinations, with places such as the KailuaKona and Kohala coastlines being popular diving spots. Kona Honu Divers, for example, conducts night dives in locations where large manta rays are frequently sighted. Swimming with dolphins — possible through companies like Dolphin Discoveries — is another well-liked activity. Other popular water activities include stand-up paddle surfing — standing upright on a board and navigating using a lightweight paddle, rafting and kayaking. Parasailing is another popular activity, especially in the Kailua-Kona region, where the water is clear. Lava boat tours also are a hot new island activity, as boat companies such as Lava Ocean Adventures provide passengers with front-row seats to lava waterfalls on the island’s east side. Visitors can explore the Kailua-Kona waters by submarine or glass bottom boat tours provided by Atlantis Adventures. Of course, there’s always more to do on the Big Island. Just check out the following activities.

From the casual to the spontaneous, Kauai welcomes visitors to experience her beauty in a variety of mediums. Get a bird’s-eye view, for example, of the dramatic Na Pali cliffs and Hanalei Bay on an hourlong chartered flight narrating highlights over the entire island. Or, let it all hang out in the exciting ultralight tours, which allow you to soar in an open-air cockpit with the wind on your face and your hands at the controls. For those who love the water and land, paddle

His favorite zipline remains Nui Loa Trek’s tandem 1,800-foot line for its spectacular 360-degree views of the entire Poipu crater.
