WORDS TO THE WISE
Ever y where in the world, there are unspoken codes of conduct. Know ing ours w ill help you maintain the pace of this v ibrant, special and complex place.
Keep the Peace (and Quiet)
SIGNS, SIGNS, EVERYWHERE SIGNS
SEE THE LIGHT
Those visiting from big cities may notice the absence of car horns. We don’t use them, except in emergencies.
In some cities, jaywalking is part of the culture. Not so here, where you risk a ticket. Obey signs while walking, cycling and driving, and stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
You Can’t Take It With You
Please do not pluck lehua flowers while hiking, nor lava rock while trekking. It’s bad luck, and you don’t want to risk it.
R espect Space
Before settling in the sand, take a look around. Are you giving others plenty of room? That’s the way we do it here: each to his own sand castle.
FLASH A SHAKA
Like a head-waggle in Delhi or a two-fingered “peace out” at Woodstock, the shaka says “thanks,” “you’re welcome,” “don’t mention it” and “you’re okay in my book,” all at once.
BE SAFE
Heeding beach signage adds to your safety and comfort. Be alert for signs of dangerous water conditions and hazards such as box jellyfish. 8

GENTLY
Growing up in Kaneohe, on the windward side, I used to ride my bike all over town. Often we’d end up in Ho‘omaluhia Garden, which is still one of my favorite places. It’s a great spot for picnicking, and the variety of plants from the Pacific and around the world is fabulous. My favorite beaches back then were Kualoa, Kailua, Waimanalo and Bellows. Now I head to the Waianae Coast, where my sister lives. Unlike on most Oahu beaches, you can still find whole shells. One place I like to recommend is the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. From there you can see my entire side of the island.
For gentle places to swim, Shane recommends Kailua and Lanikai. 22

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Fresh fish is a must. Mahimahi, ahi, monchong, ono, opah and opakapaka top the list. 24
Every meal can be an adventure, and you can plan as you would a sightseeing tour: breakfast on the beach, North Shore shrimp truck lunch, a night in the hands of a celebrity restaurateur and another at a luau. Snack stops can be just as much fun: shave ice in Haleiwa; piping-hot malasadas at Leonard’s; fresh coconut or chilled pineapple at a roadside stand.

An attentive staff approaches fine dining without airs, striving to make diners utterly comfortable and satisfied. A terrific wine list ensures that this is a great place for special occasions. PAU HANA HAPPY HOUR
Some of our happy hour spots – Murphy’s, O’Tooles, Bar 35 – are in downtown Honolulu, and they’re fun, for sure. But we favor places where special prices and libations meet the sea and sounds of Hawaii. Here are the top half-dozen. Contact info on 44 & 46. • House Without a Key mellow magic • Mai Tai Bar ageless tradition • Tropics walk in from the beach • Tiki’s upbeat island casual • Kani Ka Pila Grille best Hawaiian music • Chart House harborside, best pupu
MAI TAI
Beware the Mai Tai! As a visiting Tahitian said, “mai tai ro e” — “none better.” These potent quaffs can sneak up on you bigtime.
CHEERS TO BEERS
Island mixologists love using local spirits such as Koloa Rum. But what about frosty lagers, ales and stouts? Look no further than Maui Brewing Company. Known best for Bikini Blonde Ale, this ecologically responsible brewhouse has been honored at international beer festivals. 32
FLOWER LEI NEARLY EVERYONE loves fresh flower lei. We present them on every important local occasion. Head downtown and find yours for tonight! If you prefer less fragrance, try ilima and orchid. Or go for the full botanical perfume of sugary plumeria, delicate pikake, heady tuberose, silky ginger and — the most aromatic of them all — the three-day puakenikeni.

RECOMMENDS • Local food at Side Street Inn — poke, fried noodles and pork chops • Hiking Diamond Head, Koko Head and Manoa Falls
I was raised in Kalihi Valley. Now I live by Diamond Head, where there’s a great school for my daughter. When I was a boy, my mom used to take me into the mountains to pick mangoes, lilikoi, wild avocados and strawberry guavas. I’ll be doing the same thing with my girl — if I can ever get her away from Sandy Beach! She loves the water, and I put her on the front of my surf board, just like my mom did with me. Hawaii is the ultimate place to live. You can surf year-round, the people are nice, and we have only two seasons, both of them wonderful.

I came to Hawaii in 1983 from the Marshall Islands. The beach is my favorite place, and I used to do a lot of free diving and spearfishing. Sometimes we would go at night at Waimanalo and Ala Moana. I suggest that visitors head to the beach, of course! The one I enjoy most now is Ko Olina, where the water is especially clean and clear. And be sure to take a trip around our beautiful island, with a stop at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

The POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER (4) offers great shopping now. On the North Shore, FAMOUS SURFING BEACHES (5, 6, 7) are roadside attractions, while HALEIWA (8) is as cute as any town could be. PEARL HARBOR (9) remains a top draw. Battleship Missouri is a “must see and learn,” along with the stark USS Arizona Memorial. Oahu is more fun than ever today. We all wear aloha shirts. Lawyers in court are the exception, but judges are REYN SPOONER wearing aloha shirts beneath their robes. This uniquely Hawaiian style has evolved into a fashion genre whose boundaries designers love to push.
