there is a common belief that architects wear black, hide in a corner for a considerable amount of time and then come back with a solution. it might just be the case for some, but not for me. my philosophy revolves around the idea that the architect is a pack animal, not designed to create by himself, but codependent on others just like him and deeply rooted into a layering of all the connected fields of his knowledge.

the time spent in "Ion Mincu" University of Architecture and Urbanism helped me understand the basics of architectural thinking, giving me the first instruments for a healthy upbringing. however, while UAUIM was the perfect playground for experimenting with architecture, I strongly consider that the shaping of my identity as an emergent architect was done outside the school frame, while working in long-term projects involving various connected fields, which I will briefly explain in the following pages.

My experience with Solar Decathlon Europe started with the 2012 edition which was held in Madrid where I participated with project PRISPA, a solar house created for and inspired by the Romanian countryside. After this, I decided to draft the concept for another solar house and my project was accepted in the 2014 competition in Versailles. The next step was forming a multidisciplinary team and coordinating the project.

PRISPA was designed to be integrated into a context where energy efficient houses are considered fictional. Therefore, the house is comfortable and perfect for living, more of a home than a pavillion. Traditional Romanian architecture is the inspiration of this home, putting forward integrated passive strategies (multifunctional buffer spaces, shape, materials) and coherence in design."Prispa" is our traditional transition space between interior and exterior,between privacy and social life. Giving meaning to what already defines us as a country, this is PRISPA’s strategy.
DESIGN
The constructive system of PRISPA house is based on two different constructive elements: structural prefabricated panels and transportable modules. Wood is the main materialwe use due to sustainability and constructive reasons. The structural prefabricated panels are made of I-joists or box studs plated on both sides with OSB, filled with mineral wool and coated on the interior face with gypsum boards to meet the required fire protection. The panels are protected with a vapor barrier membrane on the inner face and with moisture resistant concrete base boards on the exterior, thus offering good plaster support. The I-Joists are economical and versatile structural elements, their geometry ensuring efficient use of the material by concentrating the timber in the outermost areas of the cross-section where it is required to resist to stresses, while they can also be made of wood remaining from the industrial process.

We use two transportable modules finished and fully equipped in order to save assembly time and they include the utilities areas. PRISPA wants to regain Romanians' confidence in wooden structures by applying modern but accesible technology. Such an engineered wooden structure is not fire insecure not hard to build, but a complex result of the interaction between professionals making a suitable products for the Romanian market. IN THE FACTORY, THE COMPONENTS OF THE BUILDING ARE CONFIGURED AFTER SPECIFIC SITE PARAMETERS. 4. FROM THE MOMENT IT IS SET IN PLACE, THE BUILDING WILL CONSTANTLY BE MONITORED. 5. WHILE ITS SHAPE IS DICTATED BY VARIOUS NEEDS DERIVED FROM THE TECHNOLOGY WE USE, TO A VISUAL EXTENT, THE BUILDING SHOULD HAVE A DIFFUSE MORPHOLOGY. 6. THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED ON A SIMPLE, EASY TO UNDERSTAND SYSTEM OF ASSEMBLY AND DISASSEMBLY. 7. THE BUILDING’S COMPONENTS SHOULD BE DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT ALLOWS UPCYCLING / RECYCLING OF PARTS. 8. THE BUILDING MUST BE AFFORDABLE. 9. THE BUILDING IS EQUIPPED WITH A DEDICATED SPACE CONDITIONING SYSTEM (BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - BMS). 10. IN ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CITY, THE BUILDING IS AN EXAMBLE OF GOOD PRACTICE IN ENERGY EFFICIENT CONSTRUCTIONS.
From an architectural point of view, innovation resides mostly in: 1. Using the shell of the house as a responsive surface to the environment and as an adaptible medium for any changes in the users behaviour. How? By using prefabricated frames (with very strict dimensions) that can accomodate various fillings: from thermally insulated panels to solar surfaces, double skins and glazing. These panels can shift their position in order to adapt to any site parameters (illumination, orientation, wind, noise, neighbours) or they can be replaced with newer technology when they reach the morally usage point. 2. A bigger communications scheme that involves the house itself in the factory process and creates a healthy collaboration between researchers, private investors, buyers and institutions.
The housing units can adapt to the environment, their parts can be updated in time and they can compose shared housing. Flexible architecture. standardized components

MY PROPOSAL FOR THE SDE2014 COMPETITION FOCUSES MORE ON ARCHITECTURE AS CONSISTENCY RATHER THAN FORMAL EXPRESSION. FOR THIS REASON, THE CONCEPT FOR THIS HOUSE IS A SET OF RULES TO BE APPLIED WHEN BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE HOUSE, IN ORDER TO HAVE, FIRST OF ALL, A BUILDING THAT IS RESPONSIVE TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND TO THE HUMAN USING IT.

In 2006 the members of the North-Eastern branch of the Order of Romanian Architects found Suceava's old watermill, opened in 1912 during the Austrian - Hungarian Empire. Firstly, they introduced the deserted building complex in the national heritage list, then they initiated the project for its conversion and urban reintegration. The approach meant forming a multidisciplinary work group (architects, urban planners, landscape architects, historians and sociology majors) to generate solutions for urban integration, landscape concept and interior design.

in 2012, Uzina de Apa celebrated its 100 years anniversary, thus undergoing the official public opening for which we organized exhibitions and conferences. an architectural object, as a mere formal gesture, is just that - a constant conflict between opinions, a daily example of the expression ”beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”. Sure, there are certain colour schemes or proportions which are generally accepted as being eye-pleasing or correct, but even those have their critics. mastering aesthetics is winning a fight, but not the whole war. winning the war implies understanding the object’s integration into its environment, its relationship with the masses and a single person, its impact upon an area or a society, foreseeing its adaptability potential, understanding what it’s made of and what it delivers. sustainability is meeting the needs of the user, be it old, new, future, permanent or occasional. This is the knowledge I focused on during my projects. This is the type of architect you should expect.
