Goodyear innovation could make tire pumps obsolete

The days of manually adding air to under-inflated tires could be a distant memory thanks to a new innovation under development in laboratories at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Keeping tires properly inflated doesn’t just eliminate the practice of checking a tire’s air pressure and finding a tire pump and gauge that works. It also can mean real savings at the fuel pump. Whether you drive a passenger vehicle or a commercial truck, underinflated tires result in between a 2.5-per-cent and 3.3-percent-decrease in fuel mileage, according to government and industry research. Goodyear’s Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) will enable tires to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics. All components of the AMT system, including the miniaturized pump, will be fully contained within the tire. Goodyear did not provide an estimate as to when this technology would be available at tire retailers, but said the timetable would be accelerated due to recent government research grants in U.S. and European Union.

Audi has announced the Audi urban concept, a 1+1seat, an ultra-light car for congested urban spaces. It combines elements of a racing car, a roadster, a fun car and an urban car into one radical new concept. The Audi urban concept car is not descended from any previous model – its development is based on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction. There is room for two people on board, their position slightly staggered and at a sporty, low level. All controls and materials are subject to the dictates of ultra-lightweight construction to ensure they convey a unique, sensory allure.

The driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals for his or her own driving position. Entry to the car is through the tailgate, while the roof is designed to be maneuverable and slides to the rear to open. The Audi urban concept rides on 21-inch wheels. The technology in the Audi urban concept reflects the full capabilities of the brand, especially when it comes to ultra-lightweight construction. The cockpit consists of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer, which integrates the undercarriage of both seats. Two e-tron electric motors provide the propulsion – providing the ultra-light Audi urban concept with the ability to accelerate powerfully. A lithium-ion battery supplies the energy – ideal for extended city tours.

The next generation Suzuki Swift Sport will make its world debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The new Swift Sport is a refined sport compact resulting from the first full model change since the launch of the original Swift Sport in 2006. It has a more aggressive and dignified exterior look thanks to a low-slung form that gives a sense of stability and tension, and a big front grille that evokes a sporty performance feel. The cabin combines essential sportiness with a high-quality look and feel, and design features that heighten excitement about the driving experience. Higher power and lower fuel consumption are delivered by the 1.6-litre M16A engine, which Suzuki developed exclusively for the Swift Sport. The engine is mated to a specially developed six-speed manual transmission, resulting in performance that is both exciting and environmentally responsible. The new Swift Sport offers superior cornering stability and brisker, more responsive handling thanks to struts with internal rebound springs and an exclusive rear-suspension design. Back to school driving safety tips By Kate Wells

It’s that time of the year again when children are gearing up and heading back to school. It’s also a great time for road users to brush up on their safety tips. Drivers need to be proactive and make sure they are familiar with their road sense and basic rules of the road. DriveWise has prepared a list of tips to keep children safe during this busy time of the year. • School Zones – Make sure you are aware of the school zones in your area and be sure to

abide by them at all times. If there is a 30 km/ hour sign attached, you must go 30 km/hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during school days. If there isn’t a speed limit assigned, you must slow your speed when children are present. • Watch for school buses – If the bus has alternating flashing red lights at the top, you must stop, whether you are approaching it from the front or rear. • Practice your ground viewing techniques – This is a life-saving skill for all drivers to know. When approaching parked vehicles, scan under the cars, watching for feet of children, animals,

bicycles etc. • Pay attention at ALL times! Distracted driving is a hot topic right now and contributes to many crashes. Driving when distracted around a school zone or area with many children can be deadly. Don’t drive while distracted, especially near school zones. • Keep your speed down in general – September is a busy month, kids are walking to and from school, are excited about the new school year and possibly not paying as much attention as they should be. It’s up to us to be watching out for them… expect the unexpected!
