Make good use Some churches make a lot of holy week, with special services every day or evening, others rather less. Similarly some individual Christians see this as a week to be marked with special prayer, fasting or other observances, while others do not. 路 . Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday ( 13 April this year) to Easter Eve or Holy 路 Saturday. I encourage YOlf to spend some time in each of those seven days thinking of Jesus' giving of himself for you. Perhaps reading through one of the gospel accounts of
of Holy Week that week, Matthew chapters 21-27 for example; perhaps spending a few minutes each day thanking Jesus that he gave himself to suffering and death for you; perhaps sharing in an act of worship or a time of prayer with others. A traditional 路 understanding of . what Happened in the. first Holy weekusually includes these elements. On Palm Sunday Jesus . enters Jerusalem to a great welcome; on Monday he drives the money-c~angers 路out of the Temple; on Tuesday and Wednesday he . teaches and
preaches in Jerusalem; on Maundy Thursday he washes his disciples feet, shares the Last Supper, prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, and is arrested; on Good Friday he faces show-trials in Roman and Jewish courts, is condemned, crucified, and buried; on Holy Saturday he rests in the tomb on the Sabbath Day. That can read like a simple list of events, but we need to .go back through it slowly, adding. details from our memory of the stories or by rereading the gospel .. passages. The places he visited, . taught, and shared with his disciples, are
real places, still visited by pilgrims. Th,e palm branches were real, so were the bread and wine, the crown of thorns, the cross, and the tomb. That week really happened, and it is important that we remember it, take it in, and allow it to shape our lives. Give yourself time this Holy Week, or make time, to walk the way of the cross .with Jesus. And then let the joy and triumph of Easter burst upon you. Best wishes,

Editorial This issue marks the beginning of the 30th year of Good News which began in 1985 for circulation in Braunston and Brooke. It has been a bumpy beginning of this 30th year for both the editor and the technology. This is why the issue is delayed and I apologise to all for that delay. Many knew that I had a spell in hospital and I am thankful to all of you who have had me in your prayers and sent me your best wishes for recovery. That recovery, seeming slow and boring to an impatient and stubbornly independent person like myself is nevertheless well underway. Perhaps I will become more prepared to allow my body rather than my mind tell me what I can and cannot do- a valuable lesson to all ofus. The photocopier has not been so lucky having undertaken its last journey last Tuesday. It is however replaced by a smaller and slower machine on which this magazine has been printed. Whilst in hospital in Kettering I was fortunate to meet again with Rev Captain Roger Brown who many of you will know. He is still, on a part time basis, one of the three person team at the hospital. He sends his regards and his prayers to you all. This is the time of the APCM for all parishes and no doubt there are some changes. To maintain the accuracy of our information I need to know - those who have retired, those who have been newly elected and their telephone numbers. March meeting We were very grateful to Revd. Janet Tebby for kindly stepping in to take our Holy Communion service. She conducted a thoughtful Lenten Communion in a Trinity Chapel well-filled with members and guests. Following this she treated us to a most interesting talk on aspects of work which MU members are undertaking in their Parishes ofNongoma and Eshowe, Kwazulu, NataL These covered an amazing range of initiatives arising from the "Zulem" P!oject, which emanates from a link with Emmanuel Parish Church in Northampton (Zulu-Emnianuel- get it?!) Amonst these was the making and sale of Lent crosses which seemed to be done by these committed MU members on an almost industrial scale! Then followed the challenge- we were presented with the appropriate strips and invited to "have a go" ourselves at making a cross. It made for a most enjoyably social and enlightening afternoon and we thank Revd. Janet for her willing support. Revd. Audrey Atkinson is in our thoughts and prayers and we trust she will soon make a complete recovery. April meeting will be on Thursday lOth April at 2.15pm in the Church Hall when our speaker will be John Tomalin. John is wellknown to us as a bellringer, but in addition to his campanological talents he is also an expert flower arranger. He will be speaking on "Flowers in Church and Liturgical Colours" and illustrating this by making a flower arrangement which he has agreed will be raffled afterwards. So, once again, an interesting and enjoyable meeting is assured. And finally . . . Because of my intended move to Shropshire this is my last article in Good News. To my surprise I find I have been doing this for the Biblical seven years and I have enjoyed reporting on our meetings. I have always counted it a great pleasure and privilege to be a member of Mothers' Union and wish the branch a successful future. There has been an MU presence in Oakham for 104 years now and long may this continue with support from present members and new members coming forward to join this remarkable organisation. Braunston News APCM The Annual General Meeting is not just for the church, it is for the community of which the church is an important part. At it the lessons learnt in the past year are reflected upon and the new team for the coming year is elected. This is why we hold it in the Village Hall and not in the Church. It is really two meetings, the first very short one elects the Churchwardens and the one which considers everything else and elects the PCC follows immediately after it. So why not come and be a part of that process on Thursday April 24th in (he Village Hall. 7.30pm Water Aid. Through the "little red bucket", present at every service up to and including Easter Day we have been collecting for Water Aid. This year progress is a little slow with a total of ÂŁ88 collected but we have plenty of time to speed up to reach a good target. Your help will be much appreciated. The May Fayre The May Fayre will soon be upon us Monday May 6th. The key to success is, ofcourse good preparation and the participation of a lot of people up to and on the day. The Committee are looking for help in all sorts of ways-there must be a way in which you can respond to that search. So why not contact Tracey Waterman to find out how you can help to ensure success. BROOKENEWS The recent PCC meeting was held on Wednesday afternoon 26th February at Tay Close, Oakham. Unfortunately illness prevented some of our members from attending and along with Audrey we wish them all a speedy recovery. The maintenance of the church was discussed and an estimate is to be obtained for the repair of some leaded lights otherwise the fabric of the church remains in good condition. Ideas were suggested for the format of special services throughout the year and arrangements for these will now begin. Following visitor comments we now have gift aid envelopes available in the church, thank you Ian and a Prayer Request board suggested by Cath will be now be displayed in church. Sheila and Derek were thanked for hosting the Christmas Coffee Morning which had been a great success and enjoyed by all who attended. Thanks were expressed to Mr B James ofBraunston, our auditor of many years, who is moving away and so is unable to continue and also a great many thanks to Mary Brooks our long standing and very efficient secretary who is retiring from the post. Sue Tyers will take over from her but Mary will still be on hand for any help and thankfully to still make her wonderful jams and marmalade, the profits of which all add to the coffers. Several other items were discussed and considered during the afternoon, otherwise members were happy to remain in their respective jobs and we continue to function well without a designated churchwarden. The APCM will take place at Church Farm, Brooke on Weds 19th March at 3.00pm. What 'Goings On' at Brooke, the Stamford Mercury of 1Qth June 1831 printed the following apology 'We copied into our last a paragraph from the London papers stating that the Rev. Samuel Shield of Preston,. had been concerned in a cockfighting at Brooke in Rutland, on Whit Monday; we are assi:tred from a good authority that the Rev. Gentleman was not in any manner concerned in or even present at the meeting.'
EGLETON NEWS On March 12th, the family and friends of Liz Smith congregated in St. Edmund's Church for her Memorial Service and her interment in the gracious churchyard.
Liz was the name by which she (Felicity) chose to be best known; by any other name she was the same sweet, admired and devoted member ofthe church's congregation and PCC. Initially, she enlisted in the life and times of St. Edmund's whilst living in Oakham, but her participation continued undiminished after her migration into Brookdene in Ashwell. Within Liz 's Memorial Service, an eloquent tribute was offered by her husband John. He made grateful mention of the happiness shared ever after their marriage service in 1967 within the glorious, historic Abbey in the City of Bath; there Liz had been born and bred. Her care of their daughters, Diana and Merry was no less an exemplary feature of Liz 's devotion. Likewise, her commitment to a teaching career had revealed her huge delight in the company and care of little children. This had been highlighted by the joy she found in her grandchildren, William and Oliver. Daughter Merry was a constant companion of her Mum in St. Edmund's services until she completed her training for an accomplished career as a Veterinary Surgeon, among her beloved horses. In the service sequence Merry read verses which celebrated Liz 's vibrant affection for gardens and their flowers.
John's eulogy to his cherished partner and pal concluded with verses quoted from W.H. Auden: "she was my north, my south, my east and west; my working week and my Sunday rest, my noon, my midnight, my talk, my song". A memorable and hugely merited, affectionate testimony to Liz. St. Edmund's, too, is glad and grateful for her friendship and dedication! The March occasion for Celtic Prayers, on Thursday, 13th, was enhanced by the company of Pilgrims who had crossed the field paths from Oakham. Their visit inspired all the assembled "Celts" to burst into song, courtesy of John Bunyan's immortal hymn, extolling the merits of The Pilgrim! The Parish has been saddened by the illness which has caused the ReverendAudrey's absence from duty since late January. She has been much in mind, kept within our prayers, and we await Good News of her recovered health and renewedjoie de vivre!

On Saturday, gth March, the Baptism took place of Henry Thomas Andrew Griffin son of Josie and Tom Griffin and grandson of Jacqui and Richard Griffin. Rev Dr Dominic Coad conducted the Service.
On Saturday, gth March 2014 at 7.30pm the very popular Curry and Quiz Night was held in the Village Hall and raised ÂŁ700 for the Church Roof Fund. A wide variety of Curries and many delicious desserts were donated by members of the village. Quiz Masters Rob Everett and Geoffrey Graves challenged villagers with questions ranging from general knowledge to geography.
There will be an Easter Sunday morning service at 9.15am on 20th April.
On Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May from 1Oam to 5pm, Hambleton will be hosting our Annual Open Gardens and Photo and Art Exhibition in aid of the Church Roof Fund. 7 beautiful country house, cottage and vegetable gardens will be open to the public. Entrance will be ÂŁ5 for adults and there will no charge for children or parking. Homemade refreshments will be served in the Village Hall from 1Oam to 5pm.

..JL -,r WOMEN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER Friday, 7th March, 2014 "STREAMS IN THE DESERT" prepared by Christian women ofEgypt This year, our Services, morning and evening, were held in All Saints' Oakham. They were well attended by members from town and village churches, with some newcomers, too. In the morning, our leader was Mrs. Joan Burns of St. Joseph's, and the Speaker was the Rev'd Julia Dowding of the Methodist Circuit. She began her Address by commenting on the lovely atmosphere in the Parish Church, which obviously cared for all ages. It was especially nice with the sun streaming in after a wet start to the morning. Nearly everyone went to the Lent Lunch afterwards! In the evening, our Leader was Mrs Gwen Fordham ofO.B.C., and our Rev'd Janet was the Speaker, in the Trinity Chapel. Just right for the attendance of 25! Thought provoking Addresses and good, ecumenical occasions. Egyptian cakes and coffee/tea served at both.

Friends of All Saints' Church Shrovetide Party After repeating for twenty years Shrovetide at All Saints means one thing, a social get together. The sign up list always rapidly fills to capacity. The food table is laden with many types of breads cheeses I I pates, vegetable sticks, fruits and pickles. Thank you Pamela and Sally. Pancakes, tea and coffee are served. Gordon devises two quizzes with some easier and some more obscure questions. Even an obscure answer is known too! Many prizes encourage the swift sale of raffle tickets.
