8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate service booklet.
Opening Hymn* 1. Rise and hear! The Lord is speaking, as the gospel words unfold; we, in all our agelong seeking, find no firmer truth to hold.
3. Word of God’s forgiveness granted to the wild or guilty soul, word of love that works undaunted, changes, heals, and makes us whole.
2. Word of goodness, truth, and beauty, heard by simple folk and wise, word of freedom, word of duty, word of life beyond our eyes.
4. Speak to us, O Lord, believing, as we hear, the sower sows; may our hearts, your word receiving, be the good ground where it grows.
Words: Howard Charles Adie Gaunt (1902-1983) Music: Sussex, English traditional melody adapted by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern – 387)
Collect Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 45.22-25 Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.’
3
Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; all who were incensed against him shall come to him and be ashamed. In the Lord all the offspring of Israel shall triumph and glory.
New Testament Reading – Romans 15.1-6 We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbour for the good purpose of building up the neighbour. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, ‘The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.’ For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Gradual Hymn* 1. Help us, O Lord, to learn the truths thy word imparts: to study that thy laws may be inscribed upon our hearts.
2. Help us, O Lord, to live the faith which we proclaim, that all our thoughts and words and deeds may glorify thy name.
3. Help us, O Lord, to teach the beauty of thy ways, that yearning souls may find the Christ, and sing aloud his praise. Words: William Watkins Reid (1923-2009) Music: Sandys, from W Sandys’s Christmas Carols, 1833 (Ancient & Modern – 658)
Gospel Reading – Luke 4.16-24 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
4
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, ‘Is not this Joseph’s son?’ He said to them, ‘Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, “Doctor, cure yourself!” And you will say, “Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.” ’ And he said, ‘Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s home town.
Offertory Hymn* 1. Thanks to God whose Word was spoken in the deed that made the earth. His the voice that called a nation; his the fires that tried her worth. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise God for his open word. 2. Thanks to God whose Word Incarnate glorified the flesh of man; deeds and words and death and rising tell the grace in heaven’s plan. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise God for his open word. 3. Thanks to God whose word was written in the Bible's sacred page, record of the revelation showing God to every age. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise God for his open word. 4. Thanks to God whose word is published in the tongues of every race. See its glory undiminished by the change of time and place. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise God for his open word.
5
5. Thanks to God whose word is answered by the Spirit's voice within. Here we drink of joy unmeasured, life redeemed from death and sin. God is speaking, God is speaking: praise God for his open word. Words: R T Brooks (1918-1985) Music: St Helen, G C Martin (1844-1916) © 1954/1982 Hope Publishing Company (Ancient & Modern – 390)
Communion Hymns* 1. The prophets spoke in days of old To those of stubborn will. Their message lives and is retold where hearts are stubborn still.
2. And Jesus told his hearers then of love, of joy, of peace. His message lives, he speaks again, and sinners find release.
3. Shall we not hear that message, Lord, to lead us on the way? Come, Christ, make plain your saving word, and speak to us today. Words: John Edward Bowers (b 1923) Music: Jackson, Thomas Jackson (1715-1781) (Ancient & Modern – 391)
Spirit of God, unseen as the wind, gentle as is the dove, teach us the truth and help us believe, show us the Saviour's love. 1. You spoke to us long, long ago, gave us the written word; we read it still, needing its truth, through it God's voice is heard. 2. Without your help we fail our Lord, we cannot live his way; we need your power, we need your strength, following Christ each day. Words: Margaret V Old (1932-2001) Music: Skye Boat Song, Scottish Folk Melody arr Peter Nardopne (b 1965) © Scripture Union (Ancient & Modern – 389)

Post Communion Prayer God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.
Final Hymn* 1. Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided, Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today. 2. Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us, speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us, Lord of the word, receive your people’s praise. 3. Lord, for our land, in this our generation, spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care; for young and old, for commonwealth and nation, Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer. 4. Lord, for our world, when we disown and doubt him, loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain; hungry and helpless, lots indeed without him, Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign. 5. Lord, for ourselves; in living power remake us, self on the cross and Christ upon the throne; past put behind us, for the future take us, Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone. Word: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926) Music: Lord of the Years, Michael Baughen (b 1930), arr David Iliff (b 1939) © Timothy Dudley-Smith (Ancient & Modern – 715)

As well as the pewsheet, we are looking at the Team magazine and the website (and indeed other forms of communication). Areas we have identified as important are communication of what is happening in the church to members of our congregation as well as to the wider community, and particularly between members of the different churches within the Team Ministry.
