8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate service booklet.

Opening Hymn* 1. Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ the true, the only Light, Sun of Righteousness, arise, triumph o'er the shades of night; Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear.

2. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day's return, till thy mercy's beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes, and warm my heart.

3. Visit then this soul of mine, pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day. Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Ratisbon, melody from Werner’s Choralbuch Leipzig 1815, harmonised by William Henry Havergal (1793-1870) and William Henry Monk (1823-1889) (Ancient & Modern – 2)

Collect Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading – Exodus 24.12-18 The LORD said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.’ So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, ‘Wait here for us, until

3

we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.’ Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

New Testament Reading – 2 Peter 1.16-21 We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Gradual Hymn* 1. Jesus, on the mountain peak, stands alone in glory blazing. Let us, if we dare to speak, join the saints and angels praising: Alleluia!

3. Swift the cloud of glory came. God, proclaiming in its thunder, Jesus as the Son by name! Nations, cry aloud in wonder: Alleluia!

2. Trembling at his feet we saw Moses and Elijah speaking. All the prophets and the Law shout through them their joyful greeting: Alleluia!

4. Jesus is the chosen One, living hope of every nation, hear and heed him, everyone; sing, with earth and all creation, Alleluia!

Words: Brain Wren (b 1936) Music: St Albinus, Henry John Gauntlett (1805-1876) (A&M 207) © 1977, 1994 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern - 279)

Gospel Reading – Matthew 17.1-9 Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!’ When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Get up and do not be afraid.’ And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, ‘Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.’

Offertory Hymn* 1. Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, pilgrim though this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore.

2. Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fiery cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through; strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield.

3. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side; songs of praises, I will ever give to thee. Words: Arghwydd, arwain trwy’r anialwch, William Williams (1717-1791), tr Peter Williams (1727-1796) Music: Cwm Rhondda, John Hughes (1872-1932) (Ancient & Modern – 652)

Communion Anthem Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face; here faith would touch and handle things unseen; here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace, and all my weariness upon thee lean. Here would I feed upon the bread of God, here drink with thee the royal wine of heaven; here would I lay aside each earthly load, here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven.

5

I have no help but thine; nor do I need another arm save thine to lean upon; it is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; my strength is in thy might, thy might alone. Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness; mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing blood; here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace; thy blood, thy righteousness, O Lord my God! Words: Horatius N Bonar (1808-1889) Music: Geoffrey Hanson

Communion Hymn* 1. My God, how wonderful thou art, thy majesty how bright, how beautiful thy mercy-seat, in depths of burning light!

4. O how I fear thee, living God, with deepest, tenderest fears, and worship thee with trembling hope and penitential tears!

2. How dread are thine eternal years, O everlasting Lord, by prostrate spirits day and night incessantly adored!

5. Yet I may love thee too, O Lord, almighty as thou art, for thou hast stooped to ask of me the love of my poor heart.

3. How wonderful, how beautiful, the sight of thee must be, thine endless wisdom, boundless power, and aweful purity!

6. No earthly father loves like thee, no mother, e'er so mild, bears and forbears as thou hast done with me, thy sinful child.

7. Father of Jesus, love's reward, what rapture it will be, prostrate before thy throne to lie, and gaze and gaze on thee! Words: Frederick William Faber (1814-1863) Music: Westminster, James Turle (1802-1882) (Ancient & Modern – 729)

Post Communion Prayer Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ: may we who are partakers at his table reflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may know his power to change and save. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

6

Final Hymn* 1. Lord, the light of your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us. shine on me, shine on me.

2. Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by the blood I may enter your brightness, search me, try me, consume all my darkness. shine on me, shine on me.

Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Fatherʼs glory; blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light.

3. As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory; mirrored here may our lives tell your story. shine on me, shine on me.

Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1987 Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 719)
