8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate service booklet.

Opening Hymn* 1. Forty days and forty nights thou wast fasting in the wild; forty days and forty nights tempted, and yet undefiled:

4. And if Satan, vexing sore, Flesh or spirit should assail, thou, his vanquisher before, grant we may not faint nor fail.

2. Sunbeams scorching all the day; chilly dew-drops nightly shed; prowling beasts about thy way; stones thy pillow, earth thy bed.

5. So shall we have peace divine, holier gladness ours shall be, round us too shall angels shine, such as ministered to thee.

3. Shall not we thy sorrows share, and from earthly joys abstain, fasting with unceasing prayer, glad with thee to suffer pain?

6. Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, ever constant by thy side; that with thee we may appear at the eternal Eastertide. Words: G H Smyttan (1822-1870) & Francis Pott (1832-1909) Music: Aus der tiefe, Nßrnbergisches Gesangbuch 1676 (Ancient & Modern – 121)

Collect Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading – Genesis 2.15-17; 3.1-7 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.’ Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God say, “You shall not eat from any tree in the garden”?’ The woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.”’ But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

New Testament Reading – Romans 5.12-19 Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned – sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. For the judgement following one trespass brought condemnation but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man’s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so the act of righteousness of one leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one person’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

Gradual Hymn* 1. ‘Forgive our sins as we forgive’ you taught us, Lord, to pray; but you alone can grant us grace to live the words we say.

3. In blazing light your cross reveals the truth we dimly knew: what trivial debts are owed to us, how great our debt to you!

2. How can your pardon reach and bless the unforgiving heart that broods on wrongs and will not let old bitterness depart?

4. Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls, and bid resentment cease. Then, bound to all in bonds of love, our lives will spread your peace.

Words: Rosamond Eleanor Herklots (1905-1987) Music: from Christian Vespers 1832, Charles Hutcheson (1792-1860) © Oxford University Press (Ancient & Modern – 119)

Gospel Reading – Matthew 4.1-11 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’ Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you”, and “On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.”’ Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”’ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour; and he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! for it is written, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”’ Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Offertory Hymn* 1. Hear me, O Lord, in my distress, give ear to my despairing plea! In faithfulness, in righteousness, O hear my prayer and answer me.

3. Lord, answer me without delay! I perish if you hide your face; in you I trust: let this new day bring word of your unfailing grace.

2. I claim no favour as of right; you are the God I serve and trust, yet judge me not: for in your sight no living soul is counted just.

4. From my pursuers save me still: in you my refuge I have found; teach me, O God, to do your will, and lead my feet on level ground.

5. For your name's sake, Lord, hear my plea: your servant's stricken life preserve! From all oppression set me free to live and love the God I serve. Words: based on Psalm 143 (A Song of Entreaty), David G Preston (b 1939) Music: The Truth From Above, English traditional melody, harmony adapted from Fantasia on Christmas Carols, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Š David G Preston / The Jubilate Group (Ancient & Modern – 125)

Communion Anthem Ave verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine; Vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: Cuius latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine: Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who having truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood: May it be for us a foretaste in the trial of death. Words: Medieval sequence for Corpus Christi Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

6

Communion Hymn* 1. Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace.

2. Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance sin doth never cease.

3. In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears; nor let his eye see sin, but through my tears. Words: Phineas Fletcher (1582-1650) Music: Song 46, melody and bass from first strain of Song 46, Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) (Ancient & Modern – 118)

Post Communion Prayer Lord God, you have renewed us with the living bread from heaven; by it you nourish our faith, increase our hope, and strengthen our love: teach us always to hunger for him who is the true and living bread, and enable us to live by every word that proceeds from out of your mouth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn* 1. Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us o’er the world’s tempestuous sea; guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us, for we have no help but thee; yet possessing every blessing, if our God our Father be.

2. Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us; all our weakness thou dost know; thou didst tread this earth before us, thou didst feel its keenest woe; lone and dreary, faint and weary, through the desert thou didst go.

3. Spirit of our God, descending, fill our hearts with heavenly joy, love with every passion blending, pleasure that can never cloy: thus provided, pardoned, guided, nothing can our peace destroy. Words: James Edmeston (1791-1867) Music: Mannheim, Friedrich Filitz (1804-1876) (Ancient & Modern – 702)

The Lord, even the most mighty | God hath | spoken: and called the world from the rising up of the sun, unto the | go-ing | down there- | of. Out of | Sion ∙ hath | God  ap- | pear’d in | per-fect | beauty. Our God shall come and | shall not ∙ keep | silence : there shall go before him a consuming fire, and a mighty tempest shall be | stirr’d up | round a- | bout him. He shall call the | heaven ∙ from a- | bove : and the | earth that ∙ he may | judge his | people. Gather my saints to- | ge-ther | unto me : those that have made a | covenant ∙ with | me with | sacrifice. And the heavens shall de- | clare his | righteousness : For | God is | Judge him- | self. Hear O my people and | I will | speak : I myself will testify against thee O Isra-el , for | I am ∙ God, | ev-en | thy God. I will not reprove thee be- | cause of ∙ thy | sacrifices : or for thy burnt-offerings be- | cause they ∙ were not | alway ∙ be- | fore me. I will take no bullock | out of ∙ thine | house : nor | he-goat | out of ∙ thy | folds. For all the beasts of the | forest ∙ are | mine : and so are the | cattle up-on a | thou-sand | hills.

I know all the | fowls up-on the | mountains : and the wild beasts of the | field are | in my | sight. If I be hungry, I will | not tell | thee : for the whole world is mine and | all that | is there- | in. Thinkest thou that I will | eat bulls’ | flesh : and | drink the | blood of | goats? Offer unto | God — | thanksgiving : and pay thy | vows unto ∙ the | most — | Highest.

†15 And call upon me in the | time of | trouble : so will I | hear thee ∙ and | thou shalt | praise me. Glory | be ∙ to the | Father, and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost; As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be : world | with-out | end, A- | men.
