6:00pm Word, Worship & Response The Breaking of the Bread Welcome and Opening Sentence
All
We praise you and we bless you, our risen Lord Jesus, King of glory, for you are with us, even when our eyes are closed to your companionship. Walk this week alongside us, open our eyes to your gentle illumination, and let our hearts burn within us at your invisible presence. To you, Lord Jesus, walking by our side, be honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
All
Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia.
Hymn 1. Let us break bread together with the Lord; Let us break bread together with the Lord: When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun, O Lord, have mercy on me. 2. Let us drink wine together with the Lord; Let us drink wine together with the Lord: 3. Let us praise God together in the Lord; Let us praise God together in the Lord: Words: based on an American Spiritual Music: Let us break bread, American Spiritual (BBC Songs of Praise – 194)
Confession In baptism we died with Christ, so that as Christ was raised from the dead, we might walk in newness of life. Let us receive new life in him as we confess our sins in penitence and faith.
3
Jesus Christ, risen master and triumphant Lord, we come to you in sorrow for our sins, and confess to you our weakness and unbelief.
All
We have lived by our own strength, and not by the power of your resurrection. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us.
All
We have lived by the light of our own eyes, as faithless and not believing. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us.
All
We have lived for this world alone, and doubted our home in heaven. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us.
Absolution
All
May the Father of all mercies cleanse us from our sins, and restore us in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Gloria in Excelsis 1. Glory to God, our hearts to you we raise! Joy and peace on earth, in highest heaven praise! Songs of adoration, Lord, to you we bring, praising your great goodness, Father, heavenly King. Glory to God, our hearts to you we raise! Joy and peace on earth, in highest heaven praise! 2. Son of the Father, bearing this world’s sin, Lamb of God, have mercy, grant us peace within. You, O Christ, are holy, you alone are Lord, with the Holy Spirit evermore adored. The Collect
All
Almighty Father, who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples with the sight of the risen Lord: give us such knowledge of his presence with us, that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life and serve you continually in righteousness and truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Gradual Hymn 1. Jesus, the joy of loving hearts, fountain of life, true light of man, from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to you again. from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to you again.
3. We taste of you, O living bread, and long to feast upon you still. We drink of you, the fountain head, here may our thirsty souls be filled. We drink of you, the fountain head, here may our thirsty souls be filled.
2. Your truth unchanged has ever stood, you rescue those who on you call. To those who seek, you’re always good, to those who find you, all in all. To those who seek, you’re always good, to those who find you, all in all.
4. Our restless spirits yearn for you through changing scenes, uncertain paths; glad when your smile of grace we see, happy when faith can hold you fast. glad when your smile of grace we see, happy when faith can hold you fast.
5. O Jesus, ever with us stay, your presence here so calm and bright. Chase the dark night of sin away, bathe all the world in holy light. Chase the dark night of sin away, bathe all the world in holy light. Chase the dark night of sin away, bathe all the world in holy light. Reading Luke 24.13-35 – The Walk to Emmaus Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief s priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’ Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the thingsabout himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Sermon The Breaking of the Bread!

Creed Let us declare our faith in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. All
Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; he was buried; he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles: this we have received, and this we believe. Amen.
Intercessions The Peace The two disciples told what had happened on the road to Emmaus, and how Jesus had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Alleluia. All
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
Offertory Hymn 1. The trumpets sound, the angels sing, the feast is ready to begin; the gates of heav’n are open wide, and Jesus welcomes you inside.
3. The hungry heart he satisfies, offers the poor his paradise; now hear all heav’n and earth applaud the amazing goodness of the Lord.
2. Tables are laden with good things, O taste the peace and joy he brings; he’ll fill you up with love divine, he’ll turn your water into wine.
Jesus, Jesus, we thank you, we thank you, for your love, for your love, for your joy, for your joy. Jesus, Jesus, we thank you, we thank you, for the good things, for the good things, you give to us, you give to us.
Sing with thankfulness songs of pure delight, come and revel in heaven’s love and light; take your place at the table of the King, the feast is ready to begin, the feast is ready to begin.

The Eucharistic Prayer
All
Be present, be present, Lord Jesus Christ, our risen high priest; make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen.
All
The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us.
All
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
All
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Almighty God, good Father to us all, your face is turned towards your world. In love you gave us Jesus your Son to rescue us from sin and death. And now we give you thanks because through him you have given us eternal life and delivered us from the bondage of sin and the fear of death into the glorious liberty of the children of God. Your Word goes out to call us home to the city where angels sing your praise. We join with them in heaven’s song:
All
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed, blessed is he who comes, comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Music: Original unknown, arranged by Norman Warren © Norman Warren (Music for Common Worship – Sanctus 6)
Father of all, we give you thanks for every gift that comes from heaven. To the darkness Jesus came as your light. With signs of faith and words of hope

he touched untouchables with love and washed the guilty clean. All
This is his story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest. Broken for me, broken for you, the body of Jesus, broken for you. He offered his body, he poured out his soul; Jesus was broken, that we might be whole. Broken for me, broken for you, the body of Jesus, broken for you. The crowds came out to see your Son, yet at the end they turned on him. On the night he was betrayed he came to table with his friends to celebrate the freedom of your people. All
This is his story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest. This is my body given for you; eat it remembering I died for you. Broken for me, broken for you, the body of Jesus, broken for you. Jesus blessed you, Father, for the food; he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, given for you all. Jesus then gave thanks for the wine; he took the cup, gave it and said: This is my blood, shed for you all for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me.
All
This is our story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest. This is my blood I shed for you, for your forgiveness, making you new. Broken for me, broken for you, the body of Jesus, broken for you.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate the cross on which he died to set us free. Defying death he rose again and is alive with you to plead for us and all the world. All
This is our story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest. Come to my table and with me dine; eat of my bread and drink of my wine. Broken for me, broken for you, the body of Jesus, broken for you. Send your Spirit on us now that by these gifts we may feed on Christ May we and all who share this food offer ourselves to live for you and be welcomed at your feast in heaven where all creation worships you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
All
Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer Jesus taught us to call God our Father, so we are confident to pray All
10
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. For ever and ever. Amen.

Giving of Communion All
Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands were unclean, our hearts were unprepared; we were not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we, with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen.
