8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn* 1. The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God; from death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky, our God hath brought us over, with hymns of victory.

2. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection-light; and, listening to his accents, may hear so calm and plain his own ‘All hail’, and, hearing, may raise the victor strain.

3. Now let the heavens be joyful, and earth her song begin, the round world keep high triumph, and all that is therein; let all things seen and unseen their notes in gladness blend, for Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end. Words: St John of Damascus (c675-c750) Music: Ellacombe, German melody, 18th century, as adapted in Gesangbuch, Mainz 1833, and harmonised in Gesangbuch, St Gallen, 1863, altered by compilers of English Hymnal, 1906 (Ancient & Modern – 216)

Collect Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Acts 2.42-47 Many were baptized and were added to the community. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

3

Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Second Reading – 1.Peter 2.19-25 Brothers and sisters: It is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’ When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Gradual Hymn* 1. Jesus lives! thy terrors now can, O death, no more appal us; Jesus lives! by this we know thou, O grave, canst not enthral us. Alleluia.

3. Jesus lives! for us he died; then, alone to Jesus living, pure in heart may we abide, glory to our Saviour giving. Alleluia.

2. Jesus lives! henceforth is death but the gate of life immortal: this shall calm our trembling breath, when we pass its gloomy portal. Alleluia.

4. Jesus lives! our hearts know well naught from us his love shall sever; life nor death nor powers of hell tear us from his keeping ever. Alleluia.

5. Jesus lives! to him the throne over all the world is given: may we go where he is gone, rest and reign with him in heaven. Alleluia. Words: Jesus lebt! mit ihm auch ich, Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715-1769), trans Frances Elizabeth Cox (1812-1897) Music: St Albinus, Henry James Gauntlett (1805-1876) (Ancient & Modern – 207)

Gospel – John 10.1-10 Jesus said to the Pharisees: ‘Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.’

Offertory Hymn* 1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not, as thou hast been thou for ever wilt be. Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided, great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me. 2. Summer and winter, and spring-time and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. 3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Words: Thomas Obadiah Chisholm (1866-1960 Music: Faithfulness (Runyan), William Marion Runyan (1870-1957) © 1951 Hope Publishing/Song Solutions CopyCare (Ancient & Modern – 650)

Communion Anthem The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me beside the still waters. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; you will comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Words: Psalm 23 Music: Howard Goodall (b 1958)

Communion Hymn* 1. Love’s redeeming work is done; fought the fight, the battle won: lo, our Sun's eclipse is o'er, lo, he sets in blood no more.

3. Lives again our glorious King; where, O death, is now thy sting? dying once, he all doth save; where thy victory, O grave?

2. Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ has burst the gates of hell; death in vain forbids his rise; Christ has opened paradise.

4. Soar we now where Christ has led, following our exalted Head; made like him, like him we rise; ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

5. Hail the Lord of earth and heaven! Praise to thee by both be given: thee we greet triumphant now; hail, the Resurrection Thou! Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Savannah, melody from Herrnhut collection, c1740, in John Wesley’s A Collection of Tunes, Set to Music, As they are commonly sung at the Foundry 1742 (Ancient & Modern – 209)

Post Communion Prayer Merciful Father, you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd, and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again: keep us always under his protection, and give us grace to follow in his steps; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

6

Final Hymn* 1. Thine for ever! God of love, hear us from thy throne above; thine for ever may we be here and in eternity.

3. Thine for ever! O how blest they who find in thee their rest! Saviour, guardian, heavenly friend, O defend us to the end.

2.Thine for ever! Lord of life, shield us through our earthly strife; thou the Life, the Truth, the Way, guide us to the realms of day.

4. Thine for ever! Shepherd, keep us thy frail and trembling sheep; safe alone beneath thy care, let us all thy goodness share.

5. Thine for ever! Thou our guide, all our wants by thee supplied, all our sins by thee forgiven, lead us, Lord, from earth to heaven. Words: Mary Fawler Maude (1819-1913) Music: Newington, William Dalrymple Maclagan (1826-1910) (Ancient & Modern – 807)

6:00pm Evensong The Order of Service begins on page 58 of the Prayer Book, and the hymns are taken from New English Hymnal. *Readings set for Evensong are usually those from the Second Service Lectionary, although occasionally others may be used.
