Reading and Prayers in Church Reading – Deuteronomy 8:7-11 Prayers Let us pray Let us ask God to have mercy on our tired land and to prosper the work of our soiled hands. Let us ask God to forgive our delusion of self-sufficiency so that we may praise him for his provision and goodness
All
Lord, you give us this good earth, yet we take your generous gifts for granted. Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.
All
Lord, you give us this good earth, but we squander its rich resources Christ have mercy, Christ have mercy.
All
Lord, you give us this good earth, but we fail to share your bounty with all of your children Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.
All
O Lord, send your blessing upon aid agencies. Where the earth is parched and the well has run dry. Where war brings want and children go hungry. Where the poor cry out for food and for justice. Give hands to care and heal and open our hearts to be generous. Amen.

Let us join together to say the prayer which Jesus taught us: All
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Hymn 1. Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day! 2. All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, centre of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee. 3. Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed, wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are thine; teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine. 4. Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life. Words: Henry Jackson van Dyke (1852-1933) Music: Ode to Joy, from Ninth Symphony, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Blessing of the Land Prayer
All
Creator Spirit, who is continually present over the land and all that is upon it who endows them with forms and colours which no human skill can copy give us this day, we ask you, the mind and heart to rejoice in your creation. Amen.
Reading – Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.
Prayer
All
O Lord, who surrounds all things living with your love and promises to save both man and beast: we thank you for the companionship of animals and birds, without which there would be for us a great loneliness of spirit, forgive us when we are careless of them, forgetting that they are your creation. Amen.
All
May God’s blessing shower upon all his creatures; may there be an abundance of the plants we use; may peace pervade the land and the whole of creation; may all people prosper and your creation flourish. O Lord, pour out your blessing on all things living. Amen.

Hymn 1. All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia, alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, Thou silver moon with softer gleam: O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
2. Dear mother earth, who day by day unfoldest blessings on our way, O praise him, alleluia! The flowers and fruits that in thee grow, let them his glory also show: O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Words: William Henry Draper (1855-1933) based on St Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) Music: Lasst Uns Erfreuen, melody from an Easter hymn in Geistliche Kirchengesang Cologne 1623, arr Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern - 532)

Blessing of the Water Reading – Revelation 22:1-5 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever.

Teach us to cherish the waters of the earth and to conserve the seas, lakes and rivers. Calm us by your quiet pools Refresh us in your sparkling streams, Bathe us in your cleansing rivers Immerse us in the ocean of your love. Amen.
Hymn 3. Thou flowing water, pure and clear, make music for thy Lord to hear, Alleluia, alleluia! Thou fire, so masterful and bright, that givest us both warmth and light: O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Blessing
All
As the rain falls on the land to water it and bring it to life, so may your blessing fall on us, O Lord. as the water flows into the streams and on into the rivers, so may your blessing flow through every part of us, body, mind and spirit. As the rivers flow out into the vastness of the ocean, so may your blessing flow from us to those around us. Amen.
Processional Hymn All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all.
3. The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruits in the garden, he made them every one:
1. Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings, he made their glowing colours, he made their tiny wings:
4. The tall trees in the greenwood, the meadows where we play, the rushes by the water we gather every day:
2. The purple-headed mountain, the river running by, the sunset, and the morning that brightens up the sky:
5. He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell how great is God almighty, who has made all things well:
Words: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Music: All Things Bright and Beautiful, W H Monk (1823-1889) (Ancient & Modern – 533)

Blessing of a Garden Song 1. How many kinds of sweet flowers grow in an English country garden? We'll tell you now of some that we know, those we miss you'll surely pardon: daffodils, heart's ease and flox, meadowsweet and lady smocks, gentain, lupine and tall hollihocks, roses, foxgloves, snowdrops, blue forget-me-nots, in an English country garden. 2. How many insects come here and go in an English country garden? We'll tell you now of some that we know, those we miss you'll surely pardon: fireflies, moths, gnats and bees, spiders climbing in the trees, butterflies drift in the gentle breeze, there are snakes, ants that sting, and other creeping things, in an English country garden. 3. How many songbirds fly to and fro in an English country garden? We'll tell you now of some that we know, those we miss you'll surely pardon: bobolink, cuckoo and quail, tanager and cardinal, bluebird, lark, thrush and nightingale; there is joy in the spring when the birds begin to sing in an English country garden.
Reading – Luke 12:22-28 He said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!

Poem by Don Ward Hymn 1. For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise.
2. For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light: 3. For thy church which evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore this pure sacrifice of love,
Words: Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (1835-1917) Music: England’s Lane, English melody adapted by Geoffrey Turton Shaw (1879-1943) (Ancient & Modern – 537)
Prayers and Blessing All All All All All
Help us, good Lord, to live as true followers of your Son, Jesus Christ. Grant this O Lord. That in all things we may be obedient to your will Grant this O Lord. That our hearts may be open to your holiness and truth Grant this O Lord. That we may rightly value the whole of your creation Grant this O Lord. That in all our time on earth we may work and live as citizens of your heavenly kingdom. Grant this O Lord. And so may God who clothes the lilies and feeds the birds of the sky, who leads the lambs to pasture and the deer to water, who multiplied loaves and fish and changed water into wine, change us to reflect his glory, now and through all eternity.
All
And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always. Amen.
