8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn* 1. Jesus, where’er thy people meet, there they behold thy mercy-seat; where’er they seek thee thou art found, and every place is hallowed ground.
3. Dear Shepherd of thy chosen few, thy former mercies here renew; here, to our waiting hearts proclaim the sweetness of thy saving name.
2. For thou, within no walls confined, inhabitest the humble mind; such ever bring thee when they come, and, going, take thee to their home.
4. Here may we prove the power of prayer to strengthen faith and sweeten care, to teach our faint desires to rise, and bring all heaven before our eyes.
5. Lord, we are few, but thou art near; nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear: O rend the heavens, come quickly down, and make a thousand hearts thine own! Words: William Cowper (1731-1800) Music: Wareham, William Knapp (1698-1768), harm Compilers of Hymns Ancient & Modern, Second Edition 1875 (Ancient & Modern – 696)
Collect God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.
First Reading – Acts 17.22-31 Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, ‘Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god.” What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all
3
things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him - though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said, “For we too are his offspring.” Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’
Second Reading – 1 Peter 3.13-22 Who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you – not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.
Gradual Hymn* Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name; you are mine. 1. When you walk through the waters I’ll be with you. You will never sink beneath the waves. 2. When the fire is burning all around you, you will never be consumed by the flames. 3. When the fear of loneliness is looming, then remember I am at your side.
4
4. When you dwell in the exile of the stranger, remember you are precious in my eyes. 5. You are mine, O my child, I am your Father, and I love you with a perfect love. Words & Music: based on Isaiah 43.1-4, Gerard Markland (b 1953) © 1978 Kevin Mayhew Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 330)
Gospel – John 14.15-21 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’
Offertory Hymn* 1. Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
3. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.
Words: Discendi, amor santo, Bianco da Siena (d 1434) tr Richard Frederick Littledale (1833-1890) Music: Down Ampney, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern – 238)

Communion Hymns* 1. Such love, pure as the whitest snow; such love weeps for the shame I know; such love, paying the debt I owe; O Jesus, such love.
2. Such love, stilling my restlessness; such love, filling my emptiness; such love, showing me holiness; O Jesus, such love.
3. Such love springs from eternity; such love, streaming through history; such love, fountain of life to me; O Jesus, such love. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1988 Graham Kendrick / Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 785)
Post Communion Prayer God our Father, whose Son Jesus Christ gives the water of eternal life: may we thirst for you, the spring of life and source of goodness, through him who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.
Final Hymn* 1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry, All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am. Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.
2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain, I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone, I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? 3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them, my hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied, I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Words & Music: Daniel L Schutte (b 1947) © 1981 OCP (Ancient & Modern – 494)
