6:00pm Word, Worship & Response (Communion) The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn 1. Beauty for brokenness, hope for despair, Lord, in the suffering, this is our prayer. Bread for the children, justice, joy, peace, sunrise to sunset your kingdom increase.

3. Refuge from cruel wars, havens from fear, cities for sanctuary, freedoms to share. Peace to the killing fields, scorched earth to green, Christ for the bitterness, his cross for the pain.

2. Shelter for fragile lives, cures for their ills, work for the craftsmen, trade for their skills. Land for the dispossessed, rights for the weak, voices to plead the cause of those who can’t speak.

4. Rest for the ravaged earth, oceans and streams, plundered and poisoned, our future, our dreams. Lord, end our madness, carelessness, greed; make us content with the things that we need.

God of the poor, friend of the weak, give us compassion, we pray, melt our cold hearts, let tears fall like rain. Come, change our love from a spark to a flame.

God of the poor … 5. Lighten our darkness, breathe on this flame, until your justice burns brightly again; until the nations learn of your ways, seek your salvation and bring you their praise. God of the poor … Words & Music: Graham Kendrick © 1993 Make Way Music (The Source – 37)

Collect O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless,

3

but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Acts 1.6-14 When the apostles had come together, they asked Jesus, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’ Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Second Reading – 1 Peter 4.12-14, 5.6-11 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Gradual Hymn 1. Let your living water flow over my soul. Let your Holy Spirit come and take control of every situation that has troubled my mind. All my cares and burdens on to you I roll. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Father, Father, Father. Spirit, Spirit, Spirit. 2. Come now, Holy Spirit, and take control. Hold me in your loving arms and make me whole. Wipe away all doubt and fear and take my pride. Draw me to your love and keep me by your side. 3. Give your life to Jesus, let him fill your soul. Let him take you in his arms and make you whole. As you give your life to him, he’ll set you free. You will live and reign with him eternally. 4. Let your living water flow over my soul. Let your Holy Spirit come and take control of every situation that has troubled my mind. All my cares and burdens on to you I roll. Words & Music: John Watson © 1986 Ampelos Music (The Source – 318)

Gospel – John 17.1-11 Jesus looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.’

Offertory Hymn 1. Lord of the Church, we pray for our renewing: Christ over all, our undivided aim. Fire of the Spirit, burn for our enduing, wind of the Spirit, fan the living flame! We turn to Christ amid our fear and failing, the will that lacks the courage to be free, the weary labours, all but unavailing, to bring us nearer what a church should be. 2. Lord of the Church, we seek a Father’s blessing, a true repentance and a faith restored, a swift obedience and a new possessing, filled with the Holy Spirit of the Lord! We turn to Christ from all our restless striving, unnumbered voices with a single prayer: the living water for our souls’ reviving, in Christ to live, and love and serve and care. 3. Lord of the church, we long for our uniting, true to one calling, by one vision stirred; one cross proclaiming and one creed reciting, one in the truth of Jesus and his word! So lead us on; till toil and trouble ended, one Church triumphant one new song shall sing to praise his glory, risen and ascended, Christ over all, the everlasting King! Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926) Music: Londonderry Air, Air from Count Derry from Irish Music as noted by George Petrie 1903, arranged by Christopher Norton © Timothy Dudley-Smith (Spring Harvest 2007)

Communion Anthem Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to guide me, Christ to comfort and restore me.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in care of friend and stranger.

Words: ascribed to St Patrick, trans Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Music: Canon in D, Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), arr Noel Rawsthorne

Communion Hymn 1. There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One.

2. Jesus, my Redeemer, Name above all names, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, O for sinners slain.

Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son, and leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done.

3. When I stand in glory, I will see his face. And there I’ll serve my King for ever, in that Holy Place.

Post Communion Prayer Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world to preach the gospel of his kingdom: confirm us in this mission, and help us to live the good news we proclaim; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn We shall stand with our feet upon the Rock. Whatever they may say, we’ll lift your name up high. And we shall walk through the darkest night; setting our faces like flint, we’ll walk into the light.

1. Lord, you have chosen me for fruitfulness, to be transformed into your likeness. I’m gonna fight on through till I see you face to face. 2. Lord, as your witnesses you’ve appointed us. And with your Holy Spirit anointed us. And so I’ll fight on through till I see you face to face. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick © 1988 Make Way Music (The Source – 556)
