12:15pm Pot-luck Picnic for Pentecost Welcome on this exciting day – the birthday of the church. All All

God is spirit, Let us worship him in spirit and in truth. The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name together.

Hymn 1. Colours of day dawn into the mind, the sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street, and let's give the message to the people we meet. So light up the fire and let the flame burn, open the door, let Jesus return. Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow, tell the people of Jesus, let his love show. 2. Go through the park, on into the town; the sun still shines on;, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; the people of darkness are needing a friend. 3. Open your eyes, look into the sky, the darkness has come, the sun came to die. The evening draws on, the sun disappears, but Jesus is living, his Spirit is near. Words & Music: Sue McClellan (b 1951), John Paculabo (1946-2013) & Keith Ryecroft (b 1949) © 1974 worshiptogether.com (Ancient & Modern – 27)

Reading – Acts 2.1-4,36-39 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.’

3

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’

Confession

All

For our failure to listen, for our hardness of heart For our insensitivity to others, Lord forgive us.

All

For our fixed attitudes, for our overcrowded lives, For our overfilled days, Lord forgive us.

All

For our lack of concern, for our unwillingness to change, For our narrowness of vision, Lord forgive us.

All

For our turning away from you, Lord forgive us.

All

May the Father of all mercies cleanse us from our sins and restore us in his image to the praise and glory of his Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

God, who as at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Creed All

We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

shining with hope for an end to poverty and for peace, and justice for all people Spirit of the living God Fall afresh on us.

All

Loving heavenly Father, we thank you for our families and friends and for the love and fellowship we share together. Spirit of the living God Fall afresh on us.

All

Heavenly Father, giver of life and health, please comfort and restore those who are sick in body, mind or spirit, may they be strengthened in their weakness, enfolded in your love and peace and have confidence in your unfailing love and presence with them. Spirit of the living God Fall afresh on us.

All

Lord Jesus Christ, who became poor for our sakes grant that we may be transformed to follow your lifestyle and give generously to meet the needs of others. Help us to hear your transforming love speaking to us of respect, dignity and worth and telling us that we are loved and that we are to love one another. Spirit of the living God Fall afresh on us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reading – 1 Peter 2.1-10 Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: ‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’ To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner’, and ‘A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Activity Let us pray. Lord in the stillness speak to us In the emptiness come to us and fill us To our troubles come with your peace To our weakness come with your strength In our doubts and fears stay beside us Still the storms within our hearts and let us find rest in you.

Hymn Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me; Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me; break me, melt me, mould me, fill me; Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Words & Music: Daniel Iverson (1890-1977), arr Peter Moger (b 1964) © 1935 Birdwing Music (Ancient & Modern – 263)

Time to eat – second course! Lighting of the candle on the cake 7

Hymn 1. Lord, the light of your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us. shine on me, shine on me.

2. Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by the blood I may enter your brightness, search me, try me, consume all my darkness. shine on me, shine on me.

Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Fatherʼs glory; blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light.

3. As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory; mirrored here may our lives tell your story. shine on me, shine on me. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) (Ancient & Modern – 719) © 1987 Make Way Music

Closing prayers

All

Lord, give us quiet hearts that we may hear you, generous hearts that we may receive you, obedient hearts that we may serve you, pure hearts that we may see you, loving hearts that we may abide in you, this day and forever. Amen.

All

God, in your love and forgiveness, accept us. Christ, in your love and salvation, bring us home. Holy Spirit, in your mighty power, restore and refresh us. The grace of God, go with us now and always. Amen.

Blessing

All

The love of God be in our heart, the peace of God be in our mind, the grace of God be in our dealings: may Christ’s holy, healing and enabling Spirit be with us and guide us, and the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be amongst us and remain with us always. Amen.

All

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
