6:00pm Word, Worship & Response – Rest in Me Welcome and Opening Sentences “And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done.” “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. “ We meet in the presence of God who knows our needs, hears our cries, feels our pain, and heals our wounds.
Hymn 1. Beauty for brokenness, hope for despair, Lord, in the suffering, this is our prayer. Bread for the children, justice, joy, peace, sunrise to sunset your kingdom increase.
3. Refuge from cruel wars, havens from fear, cities for sanctuary, freedoms to share. Peace to the killing fields, scorched earth to green, Christ for the bitterness, his cross for the pain.
2. Shelter for fragile lives, cures for their ills, work for the craftsmen, trade for their skills. Land for the dispossessed, rights for the weak, voices to plead the cause of those who can’t speak.
4. Rest for the ravaged earth, oceans and streams, plundered and poisoned, our future, our dreams. Lord, end our madness, carelessness, greed; make us content with the things that we need.
God of the poor, friend of the weak, give us compassion, we pray, melt our cold hearts, let tears fall like rain. Come, change our love from a spark to a flame.
5. Lighten our darkness, breathe on this flame, until your justice burns brightly again; until the nations learn of your ways, seek your salvation and bring you their praise. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick © 1993 Make Way Music (The Source – 37)

Confession The grace of God has dawned upon the world with healing for all. Let us come to him, in sorrow for our sins, seeking healing and salvation. Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen.
Absolution May the God of love and power forgive us and free us from our sins, heal and strengthen us by his Spirit, and raise us to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father: give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that we and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn 1. All who are weary, all who are burdened, all who are broken, all who can’t cope. All who are guilty, all who have sinned, all who are empty, desp’rate and dry. Come, come, come, come to the fountain; from the well of salvation, come and drink deep. Run, run, run into his shelter, and find your life’s greatest peace. 2. All who are hopeless, all who’ve despaired, all who are helpless, lonely and weak. All of the outcasts, those covered in shame, all of the orphans be loosed from your chains. Come, come, come, be found by the Father, let his radiance burn away all your shame. Run, run, run into the river, immerse your heart into the flood of grace. Come and find rest, rest for your soul. Come and find rest, rest for your soul. Come and find peace, peace like you’ve never known; Come and find rest, rest for your soul. Reading – Matthew 11.16-19,25-30 At that time Jesus said, ‘To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to one another, “We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.” For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon”; 19the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!” Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’
Sermon – Rest in Me Meditation – Psalm 23 from The Message Bible God, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I’m not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure. You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing. Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I’m back home in the house of God for the rest of my life
Hymn 1. Jesus Christ is waiting, waiting in the streets; no one is his neighbour, all alone he eats. Listen, Lord Jesus, I am lonely too. Make me, friend or stranger, fit to wait on you. 2. Jesus Christ is raging, raging in the streets, where injustice spirals and real hope retreats. Listen, Lord Jesus, I am angry too. In the kingdom’s causes let me rage with you.
6
3. Jesus Christ is healing, healing in the streets; curing those who suffer, touching those he greets. Listen, Lord Jesus, I have pity too. Let my care be active, healing, just like you. 4. Jesus Christ is dancing, dancing in the streets, where each sign of hatred, he with love defeats. Listen, Lord Jesus, I should triumph too. Where good conquers evil, let me dance with you. 5. Jesus Christ is calling, calling in the streets, ‘Who will join my journey? I will guide their feet.’ Listen, Lord Jesus, let my fears be few. Walk one step before me, I will follow you. Words: John L. Bell (b 1949) and Graham Maule (b 1958) Music: Noel Nouvelet, trad French melody © 1988 WGRG (The Source – 1360)
Creed We say together in faith Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and is, and is to come. We believe in God the Father, who created all things: for by his will they were created and have their being. We believe in God the Son, who was slain: for with his blood, he purchased us for God, from every tribe and language, from every people and nation. We believe in God the Holy Spirit: the Spirit and the Bride say,‘Come!’ Even so come, Lord Jesus! Amen.
Intercessions
The following response is sung O Lord, listen to my prayer, my prayer as I call to you; O Lord, listen to my prayer, my prayer as I call to you; Words & Music: Margaret Rizza (b 1929), based on Psalm 102 © Kevin Mayhew Limited (Ancient & Modern – 406)

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. For ever and ever. Amen.
The Peace In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
Hymn 1. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to him in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!

2. Have we trials and temptations, is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged: take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness: take it to the Lord in prayer.
3. Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Jesus only is our refuge – take it to the Lord in prayer! Do your friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer; in his arms he’ll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there. Words: Joseph Scriven (1819-1886) Music: What a friend (Converse), C C Converse (1832-1918) (The Source – 566)
Blessing May God keep us in all our days. May Christ shield us in all our ways. May the Spirit bring us healing and peace. May God the Holy Trinity drive all darkness from us and pour upon us blessing and light. and may the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, rest and remain with us, and all those whom we love, this night and always. Amen. We go into the world to walk in God’s light, to rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory. Amen.
