8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Family Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn* 1. As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you. You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you. You alone are my strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you.

2. I want you more than gold or silver, only you can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver and the apple of my eye. 3. You’re my Friend and you’re my Brother, even though you are a king. I love you more than any other, so much more than anything. Words & Music: Martin J. Nystrom (b 1956) © 1983 Restoration Music/Sovereign Music UK (Ancient Modern – 592)

Collect Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified: hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people, that in their vocation and ministry they may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory of your name; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 44.6-8 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one.

3

Second Reading – Romans 8.12-25 Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ – if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Gradual Hymn* 1. A farmer in a field sowed good and healthy seeds. But in the cover of the night, somebody planted weeds.

3. The farmer wisely said, “They’ll grow as one today, But when we harvest all the wheat, we’ll throw the weeds away.”

2. The wheat grew tall and strong, but thistles flourished, too. The workers saw the mix of them and wondered what to do.

4. O Lord, we want to know why evil prospers here-Why, next to love and justice, grow such hatred, pride and fear.

5. God, may we humbly see the harvest still is yours; And one day we’ll be blessed to find that love is what endures. Words: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Biblical references: Matthew 13:24-30, 35-43 Music: Narenza, J Leisentritt’s Catholicum Hymnologium Germanicum 1584, adapted by William Henry Havergal (1793-1870) – AM 770 © 2014 by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. Gospel – Matthew 13.24-30,36-43 Jesus put before the crowd another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, “Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?” He answered, “An enemy has done this.” The slaves said to him, “Then do you want us to go and gather them?” But he replied, “No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’ Then Jesus left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, ‘Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.’ He answered, ‘The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!’

Offertory Hymn* 1. All I once held dear, built my life upon, all this world reveres, and wars to own, all I once thought gain I have counted loss, spent and worthless now, compared to this. Knowing you, Jesus, knowing you, there is no greater thing. You’re my all, you’re the best, you’re my joy, my righteousness, and I love you, Lord. 2. Now my heart’s desire is to know you more, to be found in you and known as yours. To possess by faith what I could not earn, all-surpassing gift of righteousness. 3. Oh, to know the power of your risen life, and to know you in your sufferings. To become like you in your death, my Lord, so with you to live and never die. Communion Hymns* 1. Above the moon earth rises, a sunlit, mossy stone, a garden that God prizes where life has richly grown, an emerald selected for us to guard with care, an isle in space protected by one thin reef of air.

3. O listen to the sighing of water, sky and land, and hear the Spirit crying, the future is at hand: the moss and garden thinning portend a death or birth, the end or new beginning for all that lives on earth.

2. The mossy stone is grieving, its tears are bitter rain, the garden is unleaving and all its harvests wane, the emerald is clouded, its lustre dims and fades, the isle of life is shrouded in thick and stagnant haze.

4. A death if hearts now harden, a birth if we repent and tend and keep the garden as God has always meant: to sow without abusing the soil where life is grown, to reap without our bruising the sunlit mossy stone.

Words: Thomas H Troeger (B 1945) Music: Salley Gardens, Irish folk melody, originally known as The Maids of Mourne Shore, arranged by ]ohn L Bell (b 1949) Š 1987 WGRG, Iona Community (Ancient & Modern – 531)

1. Beauty for brokenness, hope for despair, Lord, in your suffering world this is our prayer. Bread for the children, justice, joy, peace, sunrise to sunset your kingdom increase! 2. Shelter for fragile lives, cures for their ills, work for the craftsmen, trade for their skills. Land for the dispossessed, rights for the weak, voices to plead the cause of those who can’t speak.

6

God of the poor, friend of the weak, give us compassion, we pray, melt our cold hearts, let tears fall like rain. Come, change our love from a spark to a flame. 3. Refuge from cruel wars, havens from fear, cities for sanctuary, freedoms to share. Peace to the killing fields, scorched earth to green, Christ for the bitterness, his cross for the pain.

4. Rest for the ravaged earth, oceans and streams, plundered and poisoned, our future, our dreams. Lord, end our madness, carelessness, greed; make us content with the things that we need.

5. Lighten our darkness, breathe on this flame, until your justice burns brightly again; until the nations learn of your ways, seek your salvation and bring you their praise. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1993 Graham Kendrick / Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 557)

Post Communion Prayer Grant, O Lord, we beseech you, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by your governance, that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn* 1. Hope of our calling: hope through courage won by those who dared to share all Christ had done. Saints of today, Christ's banner now unfurled, will bring his gospel to a waiting world. 2. Hope of our calling: hope with strength empowered, inspired by all that we have seen and heard; this call is ours, for we are chosen too, to live for God in all we say and do. 3. Hope of our calling: hope with grace outpoured, from death's despair the gift of life restored; our call to serve, to wash each other's feet, to bring Christ's healing touch to all we meet. 4 Hope of our calling: hope by faith made bold to sow God's righteousness throughout the world; bring peace from conflict, fruitfulness from weeds, the kingdom's harvest from the kingdom's seeds. 5. Hope of our calling: Spirit-filled, unbound, old joys remembered and new purpose found, our call refreshed by sacrament and word, we go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Words: Ally Barrett (b 1975) Music: Woodlands, Walter Greatorex (1877-1949) © 2006 Ally Barrett (Ancient & Modern – 493)

Women’s Ministry celebrated Seven women clergy who were among the first to be ordained in 1994 joined several hundred people in Peterborough Cathedral on 7 June for a Eucharist to celebrate 20 years of the ministry of women alongside that of men in the Church of England. “I felt fear and trepidation at first,” one of them, Canon Lesley McCormack, said in a reflection during the service. But she looked back on two decades of having “been enormously blessed and having learned much about God.” There had been pain as well as joy, she admitted, and stressed that “there is much work still to be done”. Speaking after her, Canon Ian Black, who was ordained in the same year, said “I represent the new normality. I’ve worked with many women clergy and see how important it is to have both men and women in ministry. I now find all-male groups impoverished. The Church of England is impoverished without women bishops,” he added. The General Synod has of course this week finally voted to make women bishops. In his sermon Bishop Donald looked forward optimistically to the decision and stressed that biblically men and women were made equally “in the image of God” and that “the whole of God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – has the characteristics of both male and female.

14

“The priest at Holy Communion represents the whole of God to us, and all of us to God,” he said. “A woman does that equally to a man.” Women were the first witnesses of the resurrection and the first bearers of the good news that Jesus was risen, he added, which is an “example of the Gospel overturning the culture of the day” because the testimony of a woman in court was considered to be less than that of a man.

After the service, at which Canon Julie Hutchinson, chaplain to Bishop Donald, presided, the Gladstone Primary School Djembe Drummers from Peterborough raised the tempo. They were followed by the Kings School jazz band which played throughout a reception of sparking drinks and creamy cupcakes. Also present and robed in the service was Revd Lucia Kang, one of the delegation from the Diocese of Seoul currently visiting the UK and one of the relatively few women priests in her diocese. Bishop Donald’s sermon can be downloaded as an audio file from the diocesan website and photos of the day can be seen at www.flickr.com/photos/dioceseofpete rborough/sets/72157644675348589/
