8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn* 1. Jesus calls us: o’er the tumult of our life’s wild restless sea, day by day his sweet voice soundeth, saying, ‘Christian, follow me’:

3. Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world’s golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying, ‘Christian, love Me more.’

2. As of old Saint Matthew heard it while the custom he did take, turned from sin and tax collection leaving all for his dear sake.

4. In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, that we love him more than these.

5. Jesus calls us: by thy mercies, Saviour, make us hear thy call, give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all. Words: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), v2 adapted KLS Music: St Andrew, Edward Henry Thorne (1834-1916) (Ancient & Modern – 324)

Collect O almighty God, whose blessed Son called Matthew the tax-collector to be an apostle and evangelist: give us grace to forsake the selfish pursuit of gain and the possessive love of riches that we may follow in the way of your Son Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Proverbs 3.13-18* Happy are those who find wisdom, and those who get understanding, for her income is better than silver, and her revenue better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy.

3

Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 4.1-6 Since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Gradual Hymn* 1. Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.

4. Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold; take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.

2. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

5. Take my will and make it thine: it shall be no longer mine; take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.

3. Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King; take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee.

6. Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store; take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee. Words: Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) Music: Nottingham, Wenzel Müller (1747-1835) (Ancient & Modern - 787)

Gospel – Matthew 9.9-13 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax-collectors and sinners?’ But when he heard this, he said, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’

4

Offertory Hymn* 1. Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don't know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? 2. Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? 3. Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean in you and you in me? 4. Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? 5. Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In Your company I'll go where Your love and footsteps show. Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me. Word: John L Bell (b 1949) Music: Kelvingrove, Trad Scottish, arr John L Bell © 1987 WGRG The Iona Community (Ancient & Modern – 510)

Communion Hymn* 1. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you; allelu-, alleluia: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, allelu, alleluia! 2. Ask, and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find, knock, and the door shall be opened unto you; allelu-, alleluia: 3. We shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord; allelu-, alleluia: Words: Karen Lafferty (b 1948) Music: Karen Lafferty (b 1948), arr Roland T Fudge (b 1947) © 1972 CCCM Music (Ancient & Modern – 775)

Post Communion Prayer Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn* 1. Lord, the light of your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us. shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Fatherʼs glory; blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light. 2. Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by the blood I may enter your brightness, search me, try me, consume all my darkness. shine on me, shine on me. 3. As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory; mirrored here may our lives tell your story. shine on me, shine on me. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1987 Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 719)

Hymn after the Prayers 377 – Immortal, invisible, God only wise

Hymn after the Sermon 1. Thanks be to God for his saints of each past generation, one with us still in one body, one great congregation; with them proclaim Jesus for ever the same, Author of life and salvation. 2. Thanks be to God for his blessings which daily surround us; glory to Christ, the Redeemer who sought us and found us, who from the grave rose, the almighty to save, breaking the fetters that bound us. 3. Thanks be to God for the years that are yet in his keeping, trusting each day to the care of a Father unsleeping, on to the end, Christ our companion and friend, joy at the last for our weeping. 4. Thanks be to God who has called us and daily defends us, who with the Son and the Spirit unchanging befriends us; now in that name, Jesus for ever the same, forth to his service he sends us. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926) Music: Lobe Den Herren, German 17th century melody, harm editors of The Chorale Book for England 1863 © Timothy Dudley-Smith (Ancient & Modern – 310)
