8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn* 1. On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings from the King of kings.

3. For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away like flowers that wither and decay.

2. Then cleansed be every breast from sin; 4. To heal the sick stretch out thine hand, make straight the way for God within, and bid the fallen sinner stand; prepare we in our hearts a home shine forth and let thy light restore where such a mighty Guest may come. earth's own true loveliness once more. 5. All praise, eternal Son, to thee, whose advent doth thy people free; whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. Words: Jordanis oras praevia, Charles Coffin (1676-1749) tr John Chandler (1806-1876) Music: Winchester New, adapted from a chorale in Musicalisches Hand-Buch, Hamburg, 1690 (Ancient & Modern – 46)

Collect O Lord Jesus Christ, who at your first coming sent your messenger to prepare your way before you: grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready your way by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at your second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in your sight; for you are alive and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 61.1-4,8-11 The servant of the Lord said: The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the

prisoners; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion – to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

Second Reading – 1 Thessalonians 5.16-24* My brothers and sisters, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil. May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

Gradual Hymn* 1. Hark, what a sound, and too divine for hearing, stirs on the earth and trembles in the air! Is it the thunder of the Lord’s appearing? Is it the music of his people’s prayer? 2. Surely he cometh, and a thousand voices shout to the saints, and to the deaf are dumb; surely he cometh, and the earth rejoices, glad in his coming who hath sworn: I come! 3. This hath he done, and shall we not adore him? This shall he do, and can we still despair? come, let us quickly fling ourselves before him, cast at his feet the burden of our care.

4

4. Through life and death, through sorrow and through sinning, he shall suffice me, for he hath sufficed: Christ is the end, for Christ was the beginning, Christ the beginning, for the end is Christ. Words: Frederic William Henry Myers (1843-1901) Music: Highwood, Richard Runciman Terry (1865-1938) (Ancient & Modern – 37)

Gospel – John 1.6-8,19-28 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ He said, ‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord”’, as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, ‘Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?’ John answered them, ‘I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.’ This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

Offertory Hymn* 1. Just as I am, without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come.

4. Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve: because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come.

2. Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come.

5. Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come.

3. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come.

6. Just as I am, of that free love the breadth, length, depth, and height to prove, here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come. Words: Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) Music: Saffron Walden, A W Godfrey Brown (b 1936) (Ancient & Modern – 451)

Communion Anthem* O King, and Desire of all nations, thou cornerstone, who has made both one. Come and save man, whom thou formedst from the clay. Come, Lord Jesus, come! Words: from the Latin O Antiphon Music: John Stainer (1840-1901)

Communion Hymn* 1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people; light for the world to see. Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.

3. Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed. 4. Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone.

5. Many the gifts, many the people, 2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled. many the hearts that yearn to belong. Longing for hope, many despair. Let us be servants to one another, Your word alone has power to save us. making your kingdom come. Make us your living voice. Words: Bernadette Farrell (b 1957) Music: Christ Be Our Light, Bernadette Farrell (b 1957) © 1993 Bernadette Farrell/OCP Publications (Ancient & Modern – 42)

Post Communion Prayer We give you thanks, O Lord, for these heavenly gifts; kindle in us the fire of your Spirit that when your Christ comes again we may shine as lights before his face; who is alive and reigns now and for ever. Amen.

Advent Wreath Hymn 1. Advent candles tell their story as we watch and pray, longing for the Day of Glory, ‘Come, Lord, soon,’ we say. Pain and sorrow, tears and sadness changed for gladness on that Day.

6

2. Prophet voices loudly crying, making pathways clear; glimpsing glory, self-denying, calling all to hear. Through their message - challenged, shaken – hearts awaken: God is near!

3. John the Baptist, by his preaching and by water poured, brought to those who heard his teaching news of hope restored: ‘Keep your vision strong and steady, and be ready for the Lord.’ Words: Mark Earey (b 1965) Music: Angel Voices, Edwin George Monk (1819-1900) © Mark Earey (Ancient & Modern – 26)

Final Hymn* 1. Hark the glad sound! the Saviour comes, the Saviour promised long: let every heart prepare a throne, and every voice a song.

3. He comes, the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, and with the treasures of his grace to enrich the humble poor.

2. He comes, the prisoners to release in Satan's bondage held; the gates of brass before him burst, the iron fetters yield.

4. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, thy welcome shall proclaim; and heaven's eternal arches ring with thy belovèd Name.

Words: Philip Doddridge (1702-1751) Music: Bristol, adapted from a version in Ravenscroft’s The Whole Booke of Psalmes, 1621 by Compilers of Hymns Ancient & Modern 1861 (Ancient & Modern – 36)
