Opening Carol 1. See him lying on a bed of straw, a draughty stable with an open door; Mary cradling the babe she bore – the prince of glory is his name.

2. Star of silver, sweep across the skies, show where Jesus in the manger lies; shepherds, swiftly from your stupor rise to see the saviour of the world!

O now carry me to Bethlehem to see the Lord of love again: just as poor as was the stable then, the prince of glory when he came!

3. Angels, sing again the song you sang, sing the glory of God’s gracious plan; sing that Bethlehem’s little baby can be the saviour of us all.

4. Mine are riches, from your poverty, from your innocence, eternity; mine forgiveness by your death for me, child of sorrow for my joy.

Confession Hear the words of the angel to Joseph: ‘You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ Therefore let us confess our sins. You were born for our salvation: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. You came as Saviour to bring wholeness and peace: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. You come to bring light into the darkness of our lives: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

The Nativity Presented by the Sunday School and ASH group

Carols Sung during the Nativity 1. O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee to-night.

2. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth; for Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond’ring love.

3. How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in.

Children only 1. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; the stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. All 2. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, and stay by my side until morning is nigh. 3. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay close by me for ever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.

4

The Advent Wreath As the fourth Advent Candle is lit we pray Advent 4 Lord Jesus, Light of the world, blessed is Gabriel who brought good news; blessed is Mary your mother and ours. Bless your Church preparing for Christmas; and bless us your children who long for your coming. Amen. We sing the Advent Candle Song Advent 1 Advent candles tell their story as we watch and pray, longing for the Day of Glory, ‘Come, Lord, soon,’ we say. Pain and sorrow, tears and sadness changed for gladness on that Day. Advent 2 Prophet voices loudly crying, making pathways clear; glimpsing glory, self-denhying, calling all to hear. Through their message – challenged, shaken – hearts awaken: God is near! Advent 3 John the Baptist, by his preaching and by water poured, brought to those who heard his teaching news of hope restored: ‘Keep your vision strong and steady, and be ready for the Lord.’ Advent 4 Mary’s gift, beyond all telling, was to give Christ room. She gave God a human dwelling in a mother’s womb. Who could guess the final story? – cross and glory; empty tomb!

Carol During which our offerings are received 1. In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

3. Enough for him, whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a mangerful of hay: enough for him, whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore.

2. Our God, heav’n cannot hold him nor earth sustain; heav’n and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable-place sufficed the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ.

4. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; but only his mother in her maiden bliss worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

5. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man I would do my part, yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

Meditation Led by members of the ASK group

Carol 1. Joy to the world! The Lord is come; let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare him room and heav’n and nature sing.

2. Joy to the earth! The Saviour reigns; let us our songs employ; while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy.

3. He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness, and wonders of his love.

Blessing
