¶ In Church Welcome to our church and thank you for coming to join us this afternoon. Although we are starting here in church, we shall be travelling to various locations close by. Please follow the directions from members of the cast, so that you will be able to enjoy being part of the proceedings and join in the singing (except the choir parts) – the verses printed in bold. As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold, as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to thee.

As with joyful steps they sped, Saviour, to thy lowly bed, there to bend the knee before thee whom heaven and earth adore; so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy-seat.

Follow the Town Crier outside to wait for Mary and Joseph to arrive at the inn..

¶ At the Inn O little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie! above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by: yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given! so God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek hearts will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in: be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Follow the Town Crier and choir to find the shepherds.

¶ With the shepherds The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields as they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter's night that was so deep. Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell, born is the King of Israel. Angel Choir: Glory, glory in the highest; glory to the Almighty; glory to the Lamb of God, and glory to the living Word; glory to the Lord! (angels) I give glory, (choir) glory, (angels) glory, (choir) glory, (angels) glory, (all) glory to the Lord! I give glory to the Lord! ‘Fear not’, said he (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind), glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind. To you in David’s town this day is born of David’s line a Saviour who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign: The heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed all meanly wrapped in swathing bands and in a manger laid. Thus spake the seraph and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angel praising God, who thus addressed their joyful song. ‘All glory be to God on high, and to the world be peace! Goodwill henceforth from heaven to men begin and never cease! Follow the angels and choir to meet the kings.

Âś With the Kings We three kings of orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar, field and fountain, moor and mountain following yonder star.

O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to Thy perfect light.

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown him again King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign.

Myrrh is mine; it's bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone cold tomb.

Frankincense to offer have I; incense owns a Deity nigh; prayer and praising, all men raising, worshipping God most high.

Glorious now behold him arise, King and God and Sacrifice. Heaven sings alleluia, alleluia, the earth replies.

Follow the kings to find the stable: And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. This star drew nigh to the northwest, o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay right over the place where Jesus lay Then entered in those wise men three full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

¶ At the Stable (Children) Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; the stars in the bright sky looked down where he laythe little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. (Children and female voices) The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes. but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky and stay by my side until morning is nigh. (All) Be near me Lord Jesus: I ask thee to stay close by me for ever and love me I pray; bless all the dear children in thy tender care and fit us for heaven to live with thee there. O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come and behold him born the King of angels: O come let us adore him O come let us adore him O come let us adore him Christ the Lord! God of God, Light of light, lo, he abhors not the virgin’s womb; very God begotten not created: See how the shepherds, summoned to his cradle leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze; we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps: Lo, star-led chieftains, magi, Christ adoring, offer him incense, gold and myrrh; we to the Christ-child bring our hearts’ oblations: Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above, ‘Glory to God in the highest’: Come inside the Village Hall.
