8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn* 1. Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

3. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

2. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

4. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Words: Discendi, amor santo, Bianco da Siena (d 1434) tr Richard Frederick Littledale (1833-1890) Music: Down Ampney, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern – 238)

Collect Eternal Father, who at the baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him with the Holy Spirit: grant to us, who are born again by water and the Spirit, that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Genesis 1.1-5* In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the

3

darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Second Reading – Acts 19.1-7 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the inland regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?’ They replied, ‘No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.’ Then he said, ‘Into what then were you baptized?’ They answered, ‘Into John’s baptism.’ Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.’ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied – altogether there were about twelve of them.

Gradual Hymn* Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me; Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me; break me, melt me, mould me, fill me; Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Words & Music: Daniel Iverson (1890-1977), arr Peter Moger (b 1964) © 1935 Birdwing Music (Ancient & Modern – 263)

Gospel – Mark 1.4-11 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’ In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

Offertory Hymn* 1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry, All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am. Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain, I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone, I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? 3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them, my hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied, I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Words & Music: Daniel L Schutte (b 1947) © 1981 OCP (Ancient & Modern – 494)

Communion Anthem* 1. In the hour of my distress When temptations me oppress, And when I my sins confess, Sweet Spirit, comfort me! Comfort me!

2. When I lie within my bed, Sick in heart and sick in head, And with doubts discomforted, Sweet Spirit, comfort me! Comfort me!

3. When the house doth sigh and weep, And the world is drown’d with sleep, Yet mine eyes the watch do keep, Sweet Spirit, comfort me! Comfort me! Words: Robert Herrick (1591-1674) Music: Peter Hurford (b 1930)

Communion Hymn* 1. Just as I am, without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come.

2. Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come.

5

3. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come.

5. Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come.

4. Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve: because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come.

6. Just as I am, of that free love the breadth, length, depth, and height to prove, here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come.

Words: Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) Music: Saffron Walden, A W Godfrey Brown (b 1936) (Ancient & Modern – 451)

Post Communion Prayer Lord of all time and eternity, you opened the heavens and revealed yourself as Father in the baptism of Jesus your beloved Son: by the power of your Spirit complete the heavenly work of our rebirth through the waters of the new creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn* 1. Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesu, Lord, to thee we raise, manifested by the star to the sages from afar; branch of royal David's stem in thy birth at Bethlehem: anthems be to thee addrest, God in man made manifest.

3. Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil’s might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill: anthems be to thee addrest, God in man made manifest.

2. Manifest at Jordan’s stream, Prophet, Priest and King supreme; and at Cana, wedding-guest, in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine: anthems be to thee addrest, God in man made manifest.

4. Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, mirrored in thy holy word; may we imitate thee now, and be pure, as pure art thou; that we like to thee may be at thy great Epiphany; and may praise thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest. Words: Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885) Music: St Edmund, Charles Steggall (1826-1905) (Ancient & Modern – 104)

God is our | hope and | strength : a very | pres-ent | help in | trouble. Therefore will we not fear though the | earth be | mov’d : and though the hills be carried | into ∙ the | midst of ∙ the | sea. Though the waters thereof | rage and | swell : and though the mountains shake at the | temp-est | of the | same. The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the | city ∙ of | God : the holy place of the | taberna-cle | of the ∙ most | Highest. God is in the midst of her, * therefore shall she | not ∙ be re- | mov’d : God shall | help her ∙ and | that right | early. The heathen make much ado and the | kingdoms ∙ are | mov’d : but God hath shew’d his voice and the | earth shall | melt a-| way. The Lord of | hosts is | with us : the God of | Ja-cob | is our | refuge. O come hither and behold the | works of ∙ the | Lord : what destruction he hath | brought up- | on the | earth. He maketh wars to cease in | all the | world : he breaketh the bow and knappeth the spear in sunder, and burneth the | chari-ots | in the | fire. Be still then and know that | I am | God : I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be ex- | alt-ed | in the | earth. The Lord of | hosts is | with us : the God of | Ja-cob | is our | refuge. Glory | be ∙ to the | Father, and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost; As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be : world | with-out | end, A- | men.

Laudamus Team Choir

Fairtrade

Following a successful Christmas period, singing the Advent Carol service and Carol services at Oakham and some of the villages, the Team Choir, Laudamus, is having a slight restructure to the way it operates for the new year. This follows feedback from choir members that it would be good practice as a joint choir more often, and we hope that it will give some of those who join us occasionally the chance to come more regularly. There will be a joint Laudamus practice at Whissendine from 7pm to 8:30pm on the Tuesdays preceding the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month, when we will work on forthcoming events, including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services as well as the occasional Choral Evensong. On the other weeks (i.e. preceding the 2nd and 4th Sundays) we will continue individual choir practices as before, i.e. Langham 12 noon Tuesday, Market Overton 6:30pm Tuesday, Whissendine 8pm Tuesday and Oakham 7pm Thursday. We very much welcome new members, whether you would like to join us just for the joint Laudamus events, or as a regular member of one of the church choirs. Please talk to Kevin Slingsby (01572 460000) for more details.

The total sales over the last three months of 2014 amounted to a massive £1282.71 – this includes a wonderful £844.35 being orders and sales of Christmas foods, cards and gifts. Many, many thanks to everyone who contributed to this excellent figure – it may be somewhat of a cliché, BUT your purchases really do make a huge difference to the producers Traidcraft works with! The stall will be in Church after the 10:30 service on Sunday 18 January and again on 1 February.

Pewsheet Notices Please note that the deadline for Pewsheet notices is 11am on Wednesday each week – this week four submissions were received after the deadline, and while it is often possible to still include these, there are occasions when it is necessary to print close to the deadline, so please try to stick to it if you can! Also, please note that notices should be sent to notices@oakhamteam.org.uk rather than to the office or individual addresses please.
