8:00am Holy Communion** 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

3. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Words: Discendi, amor santo, Bianco da Siena (d 1434) tr Richard Frederick Littledale (1833-1890) Music: Down Ampney, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern – 238)

Collect God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

First Reading – Acts 10.44–48 While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues

3

and extolling God. Then Peter said, ‘Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?’ So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

Second Reading – 1 John 5.1-6* Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

Gradual Hymn*

1. O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: be thou ever near me, my Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

2. O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.

3. O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my friend. Words: John Ernest Bode (1816-1874) Music: Wolvercote, William Harold Ferguson (1874-1950) (Ancient & Modern – 748)

4

Gospel – John 15.9-17 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.’

Offertory Hymn*

1. Faith overcomes! The light of Christ is shining, piercing the doubt and darkness of our world. Walking in trust, we find the way inclining to follow in the footsteps of our Lord. 2. Faith overcomes! The truth of God, unfolding Wisdom and Word, in cosmic time and space, dwells in a single life for our beholding: eternal glory in a human face. 3. Faith overcomes! In Jesus God is teaching, healing, forgiving, loving to the end; to all who know him not his arms outreaching from Calvary's cross, our Shepherd and our Friend. 4. Faith overcomes! The life of Christ, abundant, spent and exhausted in the hour of death, bursts from the tomb in mystery triumphant, makes us alive through his own Spirit's breath.

5

5. Faith overcomes! Christ's witnesses have spoken: we have not seen, yet now we dare believe in him is freedom, peace and joy unbroken, a gift to share with all who will receive. 6. Faith overcomes! In Jesus' love abiding, we yield ourselves to follow his commands, willing to suffer for his name, confiding our needs and hopes and fears into his hands. Words: Christopher Jones (1954-2012) Music: Highwood, Richard Runciman Terry (1865-1938) © 1993 The Executors of the Revd Dr Christopher Jones (Ancient & Modern – 624)

Communion Anthem* I give you a new commandment: love one another; as I have loved you, so you are to love one another. If there is this love among you, then all will know that you are my disciples. Words: John 13.34-35 Music: Peter Aston (1938-2013)

Communion Hymns*

1. Such love, pure as the whitest snow; such love weeps for the shame I know; such love, paying the debt I owe; O Jesus, such love.

2. Such love, stilling my restlessness; such love, filling my emptiness; such love, showing me holiness; O Jesus, such love.

3. Such love springs from eternity; such love, streaming through history; such love, fountain of life to me; O Jesus, such love. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1988 Graham Kendrick / Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 785)

6

Post Communion Prayer** God our Father, whose Son Jesus Christ gives the water of eternal life: may we thirst for you, the spring of life and source of goodness, through him who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry, All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am. Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain, I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone, I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? 3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them, my hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied, I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Words & Music: Daniel L Schutte (b 1947) © 1981 OCP (Ancient & Modern – 494)
