8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light. 2. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord; be thou my great Father, and I thy true son; be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. 3. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight; be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might; be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. 4. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise: be thou mine inheritance now and always; be thou and thou only the first in my heart, O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. 5. High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after victory is won; great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. Words: Irish (c 8th century), tr Mary Elizabeth Byrne (1880-1931), versified Eleanor Henrietta Hull (1860-1935) Music: Slane, Irish traditional melody, harm Erik Routley (1917-1982) (Ancient & Modern – 59

Collect God, who in generous mercy sent the Holy Spirit upon your Church in the burning fire of your love: grant that your people may be fervent in the fellowship of the gospel that, always abiding in you, they may be found steadfast in faith and active in service; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 50.4-9a* The servant of the LORD said: The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens – wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backwards. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? All of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up.

Second Reading – James 3.1-12 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue - a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

Gradual Hymn*

1. Earth’s fragile beauties we possess as pilgrim gifts from God, and walk the slow and dangerous way his wounded feet have trod. Though faith by tragedy is rocked, and love with pain is scored, we sing the pilgrims’ song of hope: ‘Your kingdom come, O Lord!’

2. Earth’s human longings we possess by grief or love compelled to take and bear the heavy cross Christ’s wounded hands have held. By cloud and fire he leads us on through famine, plague or sword, singing with faith the pilgrims’ song: ‘Your kingdom come, O Lord!’

3. God’s own true image we possess in innocence first known, now tainted by the hate and spite to Christ’s own body shown. By that same wounded heart of love God’s image is restored, to sing again the pilgrims’ song: ‘Your kingdom come, O Lord!’ Words: Robert Willis (b 1947) Music: Kingsfold, melody from English County Songs 1893, collected by John Alexander Fuller Maitland (1856-1936), harmonised by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern – 526)

Gospel – Mark 8.27-38 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ And they answered him, ‘John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’ Jesus asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered him, ‘You are the Messiah.’ And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’ He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who

5

want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’

Offertory Hymn*

1. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now: ‘tis the Father’s pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

5. Name him, Christians, name Him, with love strong as death, but with awe and wonder and with bated breath: he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted and adored.

2. At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array.

6. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: crown Him as your Captain in temptation’s hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power.

3. Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed:

7. Surely, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father’s glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. Words: Caroline Maria Noel (1817-1877) Music: Camberwell, John Michael Brierley (b 1932) (Ancient & Modern – 593)

Communion Anthem* Day by day, dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: To see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, Follow thee more nearly, day by day. Words: Richard of Chichester (1197-1253) Music: Martin How (b 1931)

Communion Hymns*

1. There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One. Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son, and leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done.

2. Jesus, my Redeemer, Name above all names, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, O for sinners slain. 3. When I stand in glory, I will see his face. and there I’ll serve my King for ever in that holy place.

Words: Keith Green (1953-1982) & Melody Green (b 1946) Music: Melody Green (b 1946), arranged by Peter Moger (b 1964) © 1982 Birdwing Music/BMG Songs Inc & Ears to Hear Music/BMICMP/Small Stone Media BV (Ancient & Modern – 805)

Post Communion Prayer Keep, O Lord, your Church, with your perpetual mercy; and, because without you our human frailty cannot but fall, keep us ever by your help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided, Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today. 2. Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us, speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us, Lord of the word, receive your people’s praise. 3. Lord, for our land, in this our generation, spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care; for young and old, for commonwealth and nation, Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer. 4. Lord, for our world, when we disown and doubt him, loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain; hungry and helpless, lots indeed without him, Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign. 5. Lord, for ourselves; in living power remake us, self on the cross and Christ upon the throne; past put behind us, for the future take us, Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone. Word: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926) Music: Lord of the Years, Michael Baughen (b 1930), arr David Iliff (b 1939) © Timothy Dudley-Smith (Ancient & Modern – 715)

Office Hymn 1. By this, your love for us was shown: you came to earth, God’s only Son, and by your stripes we have been healed; in you is our salvation won.

2. In all but sin like one of us, you gave your life upon a tree, but from the tomb God raised you up and we now share your victory.
