8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Family Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to him in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry ev’rything to God in prayer!
2. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged: take it to the Lord in prayer! Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our ev’ry weakness – take it to the Lord in prayer!
3. Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Jesus only is our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer! Do your friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he’ll take and shield thee, thou wilt find a solace there. Words: Joseph Medlicott Scriven (1819-1886) Music: What a friend (Converse), Charles Crozat Converse (1832-1918) (Anglican Hymns Old & New – 811)
Collect O Lord, we beseech you mercifully to hear the prayers of your people who call upon you; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Jeremiah 11.18-20 It was the LORD who made it known to me, and I knew; then you showed me their evil deeds. But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. And I did not know it was against me that they devised schemes, saying, ‘Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name will no longer be remembered!’ But you, O LORD of hosts, who judge righteously, who try the heart and the mind, let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause.
Second Reading – James 3.13–4.3,7-8a* Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
Gradual Hymn*
1. Meekness and majesty, manhood and deity, in perfect harmony the Man who is God. Lord of eternity dwells in humanity, kneels in humility and washes our feet.
4
O what a mystery, meekness and majesty. Bow down and worship for this is your God, this is your God!
2. Father’s pure radiance, perfect in innocence, yet learns obedience to death on a cross. Suffering to give us life, conquering through sacrifice, and as they crucify prays: ‘Father, forgive.’
3. Wisdom unsearchable, God the invisible, love indestructible in frailty appears. Lord of infinity, stooping so tenderly, lifts our humanity to the heights of his throne. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950), arr Christopher Norton (b 1953) © 1986 Kingsway Songs (Ancient & Modern – 728)
Gospel – Mark 9.30-37 After leaving the mountain Jesus and his disciples went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, ‘The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.’ But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the way?’ But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ‘Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.’ Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.’
Offertory Hymn* 1. Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.
4. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh, I'll laugh with you; I will share your joy and sorrow till we've seen this journey through.
2. We are pilgrims on a journey, and companions on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load.
5. When we sing to God in heaven, we shall find such harmony, born of all we've known together of Christ's love and agony.
3. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the night-time of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.
6. Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.
Words: Richard A M Gillard (b 1953) Music: Servant Song, Richard A M Gillard (b 1953), arr Betty Pulkingham (b 1928) © 1977 Scripture in Song / Maranatha! Music / Universal Music (Ancient & Modern – 604)

Communion Hymns*
1. He was pierced for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities; and to bring us peace he was punished, and by his stripes we are healed.
We like sheep have gone astray, turned each one to his own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
2. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, although he was innocent of crime; and cut off from the land of the living, he paid for the guilt that was mine.
Like a lamb, like a lamb, to the slaughter he came, and the Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all. Words & Music: Maggi Dawn © 1987 Kingsway’s Thankyou Music (The Source – 169)
1. Morning glory, starlit sky, soaring music, scholars' truth, flight of swallows, autumn leaves, memory's treasure, grace of youth:
4. Drained is love in making full, bound in setting others free, poor in making many rich, weak in giving power to be.
2. Open are the gifts of God, gifts of love to mind and sense; hidden is love's agony, love's endeavour, love's expense.
5. Therefore he who shows us God helpless hangs upon the tree; and the nails and crown of thorns tell of what God's love must be.
3. Love that gives, gives ever more, gives with zeal, with eager hands, spares not, keeps not, all outpours, ventures all, its all expends.
6. Here is God: no monarch he, throned in easy state to reign; here is God, whose arms of love aching, spent, the world sustain. Words: William Hubert Vanstone (1923-1999) Music: Emma, Paul Leddington Wright (b 1951) © J W Shore (Ancient & Modern – 544)

Post Communion Prayer Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love is the fulfilling of the law: grant that we may love you with our whole heart and our neighbours as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Final Hymn*
1. I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth; at Bethlehem I had my birth. Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, and l’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, and l’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he. 2. I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn't follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John – they came with me and the Dance went on. 3. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, and they left me there on a cross to die. 4. I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black – it's hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I’d gone; but I am the Dance, and I still go on. 5. They cut me down and I leapt up high; I am the life that'll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me – I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. Words: Sydney Carter (1915-2004) Music: Lord of the Dance, Shaker melody, adapted by Sydney Carter (1915-2004) © 1963 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 667)

First Lesson – Isaiah 33.13-17 Office Hymn 213 – The eternal gifts of Christ the King (t 214 Deus Tuorum Militum)
Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis – set 4 Second Lesson – Matthew 6.19-34 Anthem Great and wonderful, Lord God, are your works, creation shows it; just and true are all your ways, every saint profoundly knows it. With all saints, throughout our days we shall sing God’s worthy praise. Great the love of God in Christ, taking flesh and touched by sorrow; pouring out his inmost soul to enrich the saints’ tomorrow. With all saints, throughout our days we shall sing God’s worthy praise. Great the Holy Spirit’s grace, tempering the human story; sinners are transformed to saints, changed from glory into glory. With all saints, throughout our days we shall sing God’s worthy praise.
