8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Processional Hymn*

1. New every morning is the love our wakening and uprising prove; through sleep and darkness safely brought, restored to life, and power, and thought.

3. If on our daily course our mind be set to hallow all we find, new treasures still, of countless price, God will provide for sacrifice.

2. New mercies, each returning day, hover around us while we pray; new perils past, new sins forgiven, new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

4. The trivial round, the common task, will furnish all we need to ask; room to deny ourselves, a road to bring us daily nearer God.

5. Only, O Lord, in thy dear love fit us for perfect rest above; and help us, this and every day, to live more nearly as we pray. Words: John Keble (1792-1866) Music: Melcombe, melody and bass by Samuel Webbe, the elder (1740--1816), An Essay on the Church Plain-chant, 1782, harmonised by William Henry Monk (1823-1889) (Ancient & Modern – 4)

Collect Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth, that they may return to the way of righteousness: grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion, that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Genesis17.1-7,15-16 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.’ Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, ‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. God said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.’

Second Reading – Romans 4.13-25* The promise that Abraham would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, ‘I have made you the father of many nations’). Abraham believed in the presence of the God who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become ‘the father of many nations,’ according to what was said, ‘So numerous shall your descendants be.’ He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith ‘was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ Now the words, ‘it was reckoned to him,’ were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in God who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

Gradual Hymn*

1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light. 2. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord; be thou my great Father, and I thy true son; be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. 3. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight; be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might; be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. 4. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise: be thou mine inheritance now and always; be thou and thou only the first in my heart, O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. 5. High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after victory is won; great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. Words: Irish (c 8th century), tr Mary Elizabeth Byrne (1880-1931), versified Eleanor Henrietta Hull (1860-1935) Music: Slane, Irish traditional melody, harm Erik Routley (1917-1982) (Ancient & Modern – 595)

Gospel – Mark 8.31-38 Jesus began to teach his disciples that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’ He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and

5

follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’

Offertory Hymn*

1. Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us: and we remember the promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice, as a sign of our bonds of peace around the table of the King.

3. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you: drink and remember he drained death’s cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice, as a sign of our bonds of grace around the table of the King.

2. The body of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, torn for you: eat and remember the wounds that heal, the death that brings us life, paid the price to make us one. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice, as a sign of our bonds of love around the table of the King.

4. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond and to remember our call to follow in the steps of Christ as his Body here on earth. As we share in his suffering, we proclaim: Christ will come again! And we’ll join in the feast of heaven around the table of the King. Words & Music: Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend © 2007 Thankyou Music (Ancient & Modern – 427)

Communion Hymns

1. All I once held dear, built my life upon, all this world reveres, and wars to own, all I once thought gain I have counted loss, spent and worthless now, compared to this. Knowing you, Jesus, knowing you, there is no greater thing. You’re my all, you’re the best, you’re my joy, my righteousness, and I love you, Lord. 2. Now my heart’s desire is to know you more, to be found in you and known as yours. To possess by faith what I could not earn, all-surpassing gift of righteousness. 3. Oh, to know the power of your risen life, and to know you in your sufferings. To become like you in your death, my Lord, so with you to live and never die. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1993 Graham Kendrick / Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 585)

1. Jesu, grant me this, I pray, ever in thy heart to stay; let me evermore abide hidden in thy wounded side.

3. If the flesh, more dangerous still, tempt my soul to deeds of ill, naught I fear when I abide in thy heart and wounded side.

2. If the world or Satan lay, tempting snares about my way, I am safe when I abide in thy heart and wounded side.

4. Death will come one day to me; Jesu, cast me not from thee: dying let me still abide in thy heart and wounded side.

Words: based on Dignare me, O Jesu, rogo te, Latin 17th century, Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) Music: Song 13, melody & bass by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) (Ancient & Modern – 126)

Post Communion Prayer Almighty God, you see that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth; at Bethlehem I had my birth. Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, and l’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, and l’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he. 2. I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn't follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John – they came with me and the Dance went on. 3. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, and they left me there on a cross to die. 4. I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black – it's hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I’d gone; but I am the Dance, and I still go on. 5. They cut me down and I leapt up high; I am the life that'll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me – I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. Words: Sydney Carter (1915-2004) Music: Lord of the Dance, Shaker melody, adapted by Sydney Carter (1915-2004) © 1963 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 667)

Traidcraft and Lent Lunches There will be a stall each week at the Christian Aid Lent Lunches – if any one would like to order from the wide selection of fairly traded Easter eggs I will be taking orders both there and at the regular Sunday stall here at All Saints. Please do speak to me if you would like more information on the Easter Eggs or indeed on any of the other fairly traded items I have available. Many thanks for your ongoing support of all that Traidcraft does. Denise (01572 722729).

Thanks from Araminta I would just like to thank everyone for their contribution last Sunday. After five years of Lee banging on about community, I felt on Sunday, I really get it. Life is difficult in so many ways, give me ten people and they will tell me in ten different ways how challenging life can be, but when we all put our challenges aside and work together as a ‘community’ wonderful things happen!

Partnering to Help Homeless People People in Oakham churches worry about how best to care for homeless people in Oakham, especially over this harsh winter. While Rutland County Council's social services provide a range of services to care for and support people in difficulties, often in ways we are not aware of. A small group from the churches have been

14

exploring how we can partner with RCC: to target what we can do, so our efforts complement and extend theirs. To this end, we are organising an introductory meeting so that church people can meet the relevant council officers, and discuss what kinds of support and training would help us to help those in need. The meeting is Thursday 1 March at 10:4512:00 in Oakham Baptist Church. It would help us to get the right-size venue if those planning to go would kindly let Revd Iain Osborne know.

Lent Groups The Lent groups have started! If you are not able to take part in a group, there is still an opportunity to join in the discussion online through a special forum which has been set up on the Churches Together website (www.oakham.church). Even if you are in a group, you are still very welcome to join in the online forum as well.

Kairos Prison Mission Kairos will be repeating last year’s very successful mission to Stocken Prison from 12-16 March 2018, and will be seeking help to bake biscuits, create a prayer chain, and to join the visiting team during the week itself. Cathy Dyson will be preaching at Oakham about the mission on Sunday 25 February. Kairos is a Christian Mission which goes into prisons to show the transforming love of Jesus Christ to inmates. Kairos is a five day programme which explains and

demonstrates the Christian faith in action. Through the Bible, personal testimony and unconditional love, inmates come to understand that they can be forgiven, accepted and transformed through encountering Jesus. The impact of Kairos on inmates is miraculous and reoffending rates in prisoners who have been on a Kairos programme are almost nonexistent. The impact is so significant that prison authorities and the government are now actively inviting Kairos teams into UK prisons to work with groups of inmates. Last year a team went into Stocken Prison and at the end of the week 16 inmates made a commitment to Jesus and their lives were visibly transformed. Next month a team of 25 of us are returning to Stocken to work with another group of men. There are several ways in which Christians in communities local to the prison can support the mission: (1) bake a batch of 35 cookies. One tangible way of showing the limitless and unconditional love of Jesus is to give every single inmate, officer and member of staff at the prison – whether they are directly involved with the mission or not – a batch of cookies. We have committed to providing 10,500 cookies so we are reliant on local bakers! (2) pray for the mission and complete prayer slips which will be strung around the prison chapel as prayer chains. (3) make a financial donation. This is an amazing opportunity for all of us to put our faith into action and to reach

out to the lost, the last and the least in our society, just as Jesus would do. If you would like to be involved, please see the website for more information.

Easter Chicks If you can help with knitting chicks for Easter please can you contact Margaret Tyler (01572 724799 or margaret.tyler@oakhamteam.org.uk). Pattern available.
