Pacific Pathways A Celebration of Dance at OACC

About

The Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) was founded in 1984 by a coalition of volunteers who recognized the need for a strong artistic and cultural force in the Chinatown area. Our mission is to build vibrant communities through Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) arts and culture programs that foster intergenerational and cross-cultural dialogue, cultural identity, collaborations, and social justice.

The Asian American community is the fastest growing population in the state of California and almost 1.5 million Asians are now living in Alameda County alone. In the last decade, OACC has used multidisciplinary cultural arts to address some of the many issues facing the Asian and Pacific American community - issues such as generational differences, cultural differences, ethnic and cultural identity, stereotypes, and more.

OACC has provided the forum and physical space to build the bridge between generations through dance, music, literary, or visual art classes, as well as through public performances and community events.

We offer a variety of cultural dance classes for youth. Please contact the instructor or organization of each dance class to confirm your participation before you register as space & scheduling varies per class.

Philippine Folk Dance

Cultural Dance

American Center of Philippine Arts (ACPA) instructs youth ages 5 -18 on basic steps in Philippine Folk Dance and apply these steps to choreography and the stage. Philippines history and culture will also be emphasized. Each class is designed with the student in mind for natural progression and growth. Chinese Folk Dance Chinese Folk Dance for youth ages 4 -17. Coordination, choreography, and culture will be emphasized. Students also get the opportunity to perform all around the Bay area! EVERY SATURDAY Classes every hour from 10:00am-5:00pm. Please contact instructor, Patty Chu for information: atalie@pacbell.net. Tuition: $48 per month, pro-rated

Mongolian Traditional Dance Taught by the instructors of the Ger Youth Center, they aim to preserve and promote Mongolian Traditional Dance in the San Francisco Bay Area. The class will emphasize the great variety of Mongolian folk dances enriched by clans, tribes, palace dances, and religious ritual dances. All experience levels are welcome! Martial Arts, Health, Healing Arts Drop-ins are always welcome! Soothe your mind, body and spirit with one of our regularly scheduled martial arts, health, fitness, and healing arts classes.

Shaolin Kung Fu

Learn the fundamentals of Shaolin Kung Fu to improve your physcal stamina, strength, and flexibility. Students of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to participate in the cultivation of mind, body, and spirit through traditional Shaolin training. Qi Gong Come learn and be inspired by Master Shi Yong Yao, a Shaolin Qi-Gong (“chigong”) Master from the Shaolin Temple in China. With over 30 years of experience, Master Shi Yong Yao specializes in “hard” Qi-Gong and “gold finger” Qi-Gong, and teaches the “Eight Section Brocade”, referred to as Ba Duan Jin. Hip-Hop Dance Workout Class led by 2011-2012 OACC Artist in Resident, Judith Kajiwara. Sweat and groove to this upbeat, fun and friendly 1-hour dance workout! The choreography is based on hip hop moves, influenced by African & Jazz dance, using contemporary and retro rap and R&B music. This is a mixed level class for all ages. Beginners are always welcome! Guzheng Guzheng lessons by Ms. Winnie Wong, director of China Spirit Music Ensemble for students ranging from age 5 to 75. Students will not only learn about Chinese music, but will also learn about self-esteem, self-discipline, poise, and etiquette. Each student will find their own meaning in music and the instructors make sure that no matter what the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal is, their outcome is the best quality and self-fulfillment. Chinese Painting & Drawing Learn Chinese language and culture through painting, drawing, and calligraphy! With step-by-step lessons in sketching and watercolor painting, this class is a fun and easy way to learn fundamental skills of painting and drawing. Saturdays 1:30-2:30pm Tuition: $64/month youth $84/month adults

Workshops

“Journeys” Dance Workshop for Seniors “Journeys” is a contemporary dance and storytelling workshop for seniors, led by Butoh artist, and OACC hip hop teacher, Judith Kajiwara! In this workshop, students will explore contemporary dance, interwoven with the art of storytelling to physically illustrate their own personal journeys. Free and open to seniors ages 55+. Thursdays 9:45am -10:45am

Ikebana at OACC

Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, dates back to over 550 years and is still practiced in modern-day Japan. Ikebana pays attention to the overall line and form of all plant material used, and emphasizes minimalism and asymmetry. Classes held 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Tuition is $70 per month - includes flowers and plant materials. Other materials must br brought by student. OACC is centrally located on the 2nd floor of Oakland Chinatownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pacific Renaissance Plaza. Our 15,000 square-foot center includes a 325-seat auditorium designed with lighting, sound stage and dressing rooms for performances and flexible seating arrangements. A full-service kitchen is available for catering and culinary classes. Classrooms, conference rooms, a dance studio and an exhibit space offer year-round opportunities for cultural enrichment. OACC is centrally located, and very close to ample public transportation, and is easily BART accessible. The most current phase of the Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project was the Mapping Morsels phase. Food has always been integral to Chinatown’s identity. For over a century, small family-run food businesses have been the lifeblood of one of the most vibrant communities in the East Bay. Mapping Morsels tells the story of Oakland Chinatown food culture by collecting memories from the community about their encounters with neighborhood restaurants and markets.

A previous phase included Tai Chi Chats - In 2011-2012, Tai Chi Chats captures the stories of Madison Park’s daily exercise community, who bring rich cultural activities and promote a growing, thriving, and environmentally sustainable public space. With a documentary video, interactive cultural maps, and an exhibit at OACC, the Chats highlight the community’s diverse culture and envision together a park design for the future. These Chats help inform the concurrent public planning process for the Lake Merritt BART Planning Area and advocate for public park space and cultural activities in Chinatown. The Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project’s mission is to capture and preserve the living and history of Oakland Chinatown by facilitating an ongoing community dialogue across generations and cultures.

Exhibit In collaboration with OACC, the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California (ICCNC), will be showcasing a “Calligraphies in Conversation” exhibit. It is a unique exhibition featuring Islamic and Far Eastern Calligrpahic Art with over 50 outstanding works. Exhibit at ICCNC (1433 Madison St. Oakland, CA 94612) with select works at OACC.

Century Club |Wish List|Tours

Century Club Century Club membership will give members access to free and discounted events (some private ones only for members), reserved and/ or priority seating for some special events at OACC, and more. Patrons can choose to donate at the $100 level or at $200, $300, $1,000, levels, etc. Higher level donors may also receive discounts on room rentals, free room rentals, and other exclusive invitations and benefits.
