Community Projects Assistant OPDC Purpose and Vision We build a better Oakland and help neighbors thrive. Position Overview Oakwatch is a community initiative to take action, become educated, and build relationships with Oakland residents, local government and institutions to improve quality of life in the neighborhood. Oakwatch seeks to improve the Oakland experience for residents, employees and visitors by enforcing codes on negligent property owners, housing violations, parking violations, disruptive behavior, excessive noise and underage drinking in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The Community Projects Assistant will support this mission through monthly project management tasks. This position has a strong emphasis on government and constituent relations, data collection, management and analysis. Position Responsibilities      

Schedule, promote, attend and take minutes at monthly Oakwatch meetings Assist in the creation and distribution of fliers, handouts, agendas, and other materials as needed Update group membership list and Top Ten list and send to Oakwatch City, County and University partners Coordinate and cross reference available crime data and 311 reports with enforcement partners Assist in data entry and management Attend, prepare evidence and recruit other residents for Oakland Housing Court Hearings as needed

Position Qualifications        

Education: Upper-level undergraduate or graduate student preferred General knowledge of, interest in, or exposure to community engagement, public policy and local government Ability to handle frequent management of data Proficient in database applications and Microsoft Excel Self-motivated, and independent worker Outgoing personality, not afraid to talk to people they may not know, able to build relationships with a diversity of people Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and achieve results in a timely fashion Team player; open to nonprofit environment where each staff member may be called upon to do unglamorous work or fill in for another person on occasion

Duration and Compensation

Students eligible for Federal Work Study funds are preferred. If not eligible a small stipend will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications.
