Protecting our Lakes
Minnesota has always been a leader when it comes to water quality protection. Recently, Aquatic
Invasive Species (AIS) has been in the news headlines more than ever, each type effecting lakes in
different ways. Zebra Mussels which is an AIS, has drawn the most attention in recent years. Being educated and teaching others on how to prevent the spread of AIS is vital to the water resources we have in Minnesota. Everyone who interacts with the lakes is a part of preventing the spread of AIS.
In the last year, awareness and concern regarding AIS in our local community has grown substantially. The presence of Zebra Mussels, confirmed in three area lakes (Clearwater, John and Sylvia) has brought
concern to residents and an increase in lake access monitoring tactics. To our West in Lake Koronis, near Paynesville, a more frightening AIS is now drawing attention. Starry Stonewort, found in the lake in 2015, is an invasive green algae that is dense and difficult to kill. It forms a surface mat, can interfere with boating and recreation, may displace native plants and could have impacts on fish and other ani-
mals. The Minnesota DNR and Koronis Lake Association are currently working together to manage it. To stay updated or to get involved, visit http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/aquatic/index.html Reach out to your lake association. Lets do all that we can to protect our lakes.
