Various production methods

Over the years, various methods have been developed to produce floral foam. While many manufacturers work with block foaming, our German plant in Grünstadt has specialized in continuous foaming.

1. Block foaming

Here, the raw materials are mixed in portions (discontinuously) and then poured into a mold in which they foam up automatically. The foaming process is restricted by the large sides of the mold. The higher the side walls, the more likely that sponginess will occur in the area of the side walls.

2. Continuous foaming

In continuous foaming, the raw materials are permanently mixed and sprayed on a running paper, as is the case with OASIS® Floral Foam.

Advantage of this permanent process in contrast to block foaming is the foam can expand more freely and evenly. The blocks are then ready to get cut by a band saw or shaped by a milling machine. In the end each piece gets its branding.

Thanks to continuous, multi-stage quality controls, OASIS® Floral Foam brand stands for consistent high quality.

INSTRUCTIONS

Watering of Fresh Floral Foam

Always place the OASIS® Floral Foam on top of the water mixed with FloraLife® Flower Food solution and allow it to soak up by itself, do not force it to submerge. Be sure the container is clean, of adequate size, and sufficiently filled with solution so the foam can "free-float" as it is absorbing solution. This ensures that the solution is evenly distributed in the foam, the air can escape completely, and every flower in the arrangement is properly hydrated and nourished.

If the floral foam is pushed into the solution, only the outer cells are absorbing the solution and the air can no longer escape from the inner cells. This causes a dry core inside the floral foam, which does not supply the flowers with necessary hydration and nutrition, causing them to wilt prematurely!

An OASIS® Standard Fresh Floral Foam Brick absorbs 98% of its own volume of water and weighs just under 2 kg.

Watered Floral Foam

The soaking time of an OASIS® Fresh Floral Floral Foam brick is only approx. 90 seconds (except for OASIS® NatureSource™ , which takes a little longer). It is therefore not necessary to soak fresh floral foam in advance! It is best to cut the floral foam dry, soak it first and then secure it in the container.

Floral foam that has been soaked should not be kept in tap water for longer than a day, as the bacteria in the tap water and in the container can multiply and affect the shelf life of the flowers later on.

Floral foam that has already been soaked should not be dried for storage or re-used. Once used it is difficult to rehydrate and will no longer absorb enough solution. It cannot hold the optimal amount of water and bacteria have already multiplied which will have a significantly negative impact on the quality of your flowers.

Instructions Instructions

The law of the water column

The following points should be noted for designs that require several bricks to be placed on top of each other:

The OASIS® Floral Foam can hold water solution up to a height of 23 cm (thats the height of a brick). If the Fresh Floral Foam is higher, the solution will run out.

This undesirable effect can be minimized by placing foil or a thin layer of dry Foam between the individual bricks, thus interrupting the water column. This ensures that sufficient solution is stored in both the upper and lower bricks.

This is why particularly large OASIS® Foam Products have one or even several cut lines / interruptions in the foam.

How to water a large foam part?

1. Check the size of the item

2. Find a suitable container e.g. mortar tub, play shell, balcony box

3. Clean the container with FloraLife® D.C.D.

Cleaner

4. Mix water with the right amount of FloraLife® Flower Food

If necessary, place the article upright and allow it to soak in all around.

OASIS® Car Decoration

If flowers are inserted into the soaked floral foam, water solution will run out. Only the amount of corresponding to the volume of the inserted stems will run out.

OASIS® car decorations are available in various shapes and designs. With some products (e.g. OASIS® Car Double Ring, Car Heart, Car Corso, Car Rondella), the vacuum suction cup is already integrated and firmly anchored to the foam base. With other products (e.g: OASIS® ECObase® Heart for Installation), the suction cups are sometimes supplied and can be quickly and easily attached to the base of the floral foam on site. They all provide a secure hold if the following points are observed: Clean the vacuum cup well again after attaching the car decoration holder. Dirt or dust under the vacuum cleaner can cause it to rub into the top layers of paint on a hood and leave a mark (this can be removed by the car workshop, but is avoidable!).

The surface must also be clean, dry and free of grease. Freshly polished car paint can impair the suction cup‘s holding power. The polish should therefore be carefully removed from the intended area with warm water, detergent and a lint-free cloth, e.g. leather cloth.

Attaching products with an integrated vacuum cup

Attaching: Place the equipped product on the hood and activate the vacuum cup by pulling the two pull handles outwards at the same time.

Removing: By simultaneously pressing the pull handles of the vacuum cup inwards, the connection to the base is automatically released. If the suction cup does not release immediately, lift the suction surface slightly at the edge with your fingertip and allow air to flow into the vacuum.

Attaching: First press the supplied vacuum cups into the receptacles on the underside of the product until they click into place. The round thickening at the top of the suction cup ensures that it does not detach from the foam base. Place the finished arrangement on the hood.

Removing: Use your fingertip to slightly lift the suction surface on the edge of the suction cup. This allows air to flow into the vacuum and the suction cup detaches from the base.

Correct filling of containers

OASIS® Floral Foam is sensitive to pressure due to its fine cell structure. The foam should be carefully pressed into the container with a flat hand. This distributes the pressure evenly and does not destroy the cell structure. The water thus remains contained in the cells.

OASIS® Bridal Bouquet Holder

The comparatively small base of a bridal bouquet holder can easily hold 30 to 40 flower stems if following these recommendations:

• Cut all stems at a 45° angle

• Insert the stems deep enough into the holder

• It is very important to anchor the materials, which are processed in a flowing manner: Wire on the materials, pass the wire through the floral foam when trimming. Insert the end of the wire back into the bridal bouquet holder on the other side.

A so-called “machine gun effect” is created if the holder is clamped at an angle in the work stand and then worked vertically, at right angles to the handle. If the bride then holds the bouquet very upright in the excitement and does not tilt it forward at an angle, the flowers “shoot” forward horizontally. For this reason, the flowing part should be worked at an acute angle to the handle or an OASIS® Ladynette foam holder (with angled handle) should be used. Attention: the position of the center of gravity is at the top of the holder!

The OASIS® Carfix Film protects sensitive surfaces such as car paint. It is transparent, self-adhesive and can be removed without leaving any residue.

OASIS® Ladynette

Re-watering the OASIS® Lady Plus Bridal Bouquet Holder

The OASIS® Lady Plus bridal bouquet holder offers a special feature: it can be used to make the Bridal Bouquet two days before the wedding without hesitation, as it can be saturated again thanks to the unscrewable handle end.

Simply unscrew the lower half of the handle after cutting and leave the bouquet in a container with fresh water mixed with FloraLife® Flower Food.

The OASIS® Floral Foam automatically absorbs the water used by the flowers. This keeps the bouquet optimally fresh!

Insertion technology

All stems, including dried materials such as proteas (memorial floristry), must be cut at an angle, i.e. sharpened. Foam has full contact with the stem and holds it in place

Foam tears out and has no contact with the handle > no grip Luft

Foam is divided and gently pressed to the side Foam is compressed and becomes unstable air

Spray the finished bridal bouquet with FloraLife® Finishing Touch Spray. This inhibits evaporation and ensures long-lasting freshness. Please let the flowers dry before placing in a cooler.

An extremely long cut does not mean that the flowers can absorb more water. However, it does provide a large surface for bacteria to attack!

If the stem is not cut all the way through (in diameter), optimum water absorption is not guaranteed. The conduits that are important for water absorption are usually located in the outer skin of the flower stems and not on the inside!

Important warnings when using some products

Smithers-Oasis Germany GmbH accepts no liability for the improper handling of products. We therefore ask you to observe the following:

Car Decoration Holder e.g.

OASIS®

Car Double Ring

Products with magnets e.g. corsage magnets

• Do not wear or store near medical devices! The function of pacemakers, insulin pumps, hearing aids, etc. may be impaired or disabled!

• Do not wear or store near cards with magnetic strips! The function of credit cards, EC cards, telephone cards, etc. can be rendered ineffective!

Be sure to inform your customers of the potential hazards and have the customer confirm receipt of the information in writing.

Products with self-adhesive pad e.g. OASIS® Powerstick-Corso Plug-In Foam Holder

• The adhesive pad is not suitable for sticking to the painted body of a vehicle, it cannot be removed with leaving residue and without the risk of damaging the paint therefore you should not stick directly to the vehicle. To minimize any risk we recommend using OASIS® Carfix film!

• Take care when applying to church pews! The paintwork on old, antique church pews is often very sensitive. There is a risk that the adhesive pad cannot be removed without leaving residue and without damaging the surface of the pew.

Sometimes a customer orders a car decoration and wants to put it on the car itself (e.g. because the wedding is in another city). What they may not realize however is direct contact can cause damage to the vehicle's paint. Customers may also not realize use of the car decoration on the car itself is at their own risk, so in addition to keeping their speed in check, (do not drive faster than 50 km/h), be sure to advise them that to minimize their risk we highly recommend using OASIS® Carfix Film.

Why a flower arrangement?

Customers always want to get as much as possible for their money For customers, it's not necessarily the elaborate design that is the first consideration when evaluating the price and performance but the relationship between price and size and/or originality of the arrangement.

Especially in times of high-priced materials (cut flowers), an arrangement has clear advantages over a bouquet.

Advantages for florists

• Simpler and more design options

• Reduced material costs

• Arrangements with OASIS® Fresh Floral Foam can be easily prepared in advance

• Continuous water supply and maximum flower durability

• Broken off flowers can still be used

> Reduction of costs

Advantages for the customer

• The continuous water supply ensures that the flower arrangements arrive fresh at home or at the recipient‘s home even after a long journey.

• There is no need for initial care and the tiresome search for a suitable vase.

• Due to its special appearance, a flower arrangement often has a greater impact on the recipient than a bouquet.

• The shelf life of flowers is still the most important decision criterion for consumers when buying flowers. Arrangements with OASIS® Maxlife Floral Foam provide maximum flower durability and thus increase the incentive to buy.

1. Simple and versatile design options

Shape designs are cutting-edge and offer the opportunity to set yourself apart from mass suppliers. With the use of OASIS® Floral Foam articles (e.g. hearts, cylinders, rings, spheres, cones, etc.), an efficient working method and controlled use of materials, designs can be produced at reasonable cost.

2. Reduced material costs

Despite the lower and more cost-effective use of materials, flower arrangements can achieve a greater effect and higher value than bouquets if the following points are taken into account:

• Flowers with broken stems can be used and do not have to be thrown away

• Targeted use of few large-leaved flowers

• Cover the base with large forms or inexpensive tendrils

• Setting value-adding accents

• Effective colors and contrasts to be used

Consider the cost factor “vessel”, by:

• Containers that have become unfashionable can be covered with decorative fabric or treated with OASIS® Easy Colour or OASIS® Aqua Colour

• Replacing the vessel with creative design

• Minimally refining inexpensive vessels

3. Reduced working hours

Arrangements are, technically speaking, quicker and easier to make than bouquets! As they are made with less floral material, the working time is automatically reduced. The use of semi-finished products also reduces working time as it increases productivity (more designs per hour).

The production of small batches reduces the working time per arrangement. Only one basic design idea is required, which can be worked out in several variations. The time saving lies in the automation of the steps involved in making the “blanks” and in the fact that not every piece has to be created from scratch.

The division into individual work steps when producing several arrangements with a similar look saves a lot of time:

Step 1: Covering/shaping the base with greenery/vines

Step 2: Placing the main flowers

Step 3: Filling the spaces in between with flowers of lesser value and accessories

Step 4: Possibly add accessories (such as wire)

Extra tips

Quick changes and refinement with accessories are possible:

• Themed plugs can also be used to quickly change a flower arrangement to suit a specific occasion, for example, a birthday arrangement can quickly be turned into a flowery thank you.

• Many commercially available plugs such as baubles, apples etc. have a short wire and you would have to extend it before using. An extension is not necessary for flower arrangements.

• By exchanging individual flowers, the arrangement can be quickly adapted to individual customer wishes, e.g. if the customer prefers a yellow flower instead of a red one.

OASIS® BLACK FOAM – the special one

• The items in the OASIS® BLACK IDEAL series are a design element and may remain visible.

• The rich black color of BLACK FOAM only develops when soaked.

• If the foam is to remain visible, special care must be taken to ensure that the floral foam product is not damaged.

• OASIS® BLACK IDEAL Floral Foam can be used in exactly the same way as green OASIS® IDEAL Floral Foam. Both types of foam are identical and vary only in color, which is lightfast and does not fade.

The ideal combination for the table and as a gift are the OASIS® BLACK IDEAL Maxlife Bricks and glass jars! Here too, the black foam is not recognizable as such. It looks elegant and can remain uncovered, so there is no need to fill it with granules or wrap it with leaves or similar. This saves material and time.

CARE OF CUT FLOWERS

Why is the care of cut flowers so important?

Cut flowers can quickly deteriorate and their vase life cut short if not given the proper care and handling.

The better flowers are treated, the longer they last! It has been proven customers value vase life most when purchasing flowers. Vase life can vary between flower varieties, but the average should be at least 7 days to enjoy.

1 A clean work area, tools and containers inhibit bacterial growth

2 Low temperatures slow down the metabolism, so store at 1-3 degrees, excluding tropical flowers and foliage

Tropical species such as Anthyrium, Heliconia, Strelitzia and orchids are sensitive to cold! The ideal temperature for storing tropical species is 13°-16°C.

3 High humidity reduces water loss. The relative humidity in the cooler should therefore be 75-85 %

4 The pH value of tap water is higher than the optimum value for flowers and must therefore be lowered to 3-5

Cut flowers constantly evaporate moisture. This creates what is known as evaporation suction, which draws water into the flowers.

If the stems are not in solution, they suck air into the vascular system, the stems are blocked and hydration is more difficult, see FloraLife® Quick Dip.

For this reason, the flower must be cut and this part of the flower stem removed immediately before placing it in solution.

The blade of the knife or scissors should be sharp and cleanly disinfected with FloraLife® D.C.D. Cleaner. This ensures that the stems are not bruised and can hydrate optimally.

In many cut flowers, especially roses, the conduits that are important for water absorption are usually located in the outer skin of the flower stems and not on the inside. An extremely long cut therefore does not mean that the flowers can absorb more solution.

However, it does create a larger surface for bacterial attacks.

If the stem is not completely cut through (in diameter) with an extremely steep cut, optimum hydration is not guaranteed.

FloraLife® Express Ultra 200: 5 ml to 1 litre of water

Extra tips for using Flower Food

If cut flowers are delivered to the store, they should normally be re-cut. This is especially important after dry transportation (drying causes air to close the ducts and they cannot absorb water and nutrients when they come into contact with water again). We recommend FloraLife® QuickDip to reopen the ducts. If the flowers are then placed in water with FloraLife®Express Flower Food, they no longer need to be re-cut, which saves time and money!

Water enriched with FloraLife® Flower Food does not need to be changed daily! It is sufficient to add flower food solution to the containers with the flowers (e.g. in the sales room) (note: dose correctly!). Rule of thumb: if the water quality does not appear to be drinkable, the solution should be replaced and the containers cleaned with FloraLife® DCD Cleaner.

Instead of preparing individual cut flower food solutions for each container, it is advisable to prepare a larger quantity at once. A standard 10 liter watering can with a measuring scale is suitable for this purpose. This can then be used to fill the individual containers. This not only saves time, it also makes correct dosing child‘s play. (100 g FloraLife® Universal Cut Flower Food for 10 liters of water).

Water with FloraLife® Clear Flower Food should not be filled into metal containers or lead crystal vases. However, if you do not want to do without displaying flowers in metal containers in the salesroom, liners should be used.

Dosing is even easier with our new FloraLife® QUICKMIX hand dosing system. The compact, precise and handy dosing system can be easily connected to any water source with its GARDENA® hose connection and can be used with most FloraLife® products.

Your apprenticeship is a foundation for your future success. Use what you have learned and pursue your dreams with passion and determination!
