Cairns Festival is an annual celebration of Tropical lifestyle with 10 days of performances, exhibitions, film and the ever-popular Grand Parade and Carnival on Collins.
The Library The City Lights program engages local and national artists to create large-scale projection and multimedia installations in the Cairns CBD.
Since 2015 the Cairns City Library has been transformed with large-scale projections that transform the historic building into a gallery of pictures, sound and light. Working with different artists each year the City Lights projections speak to the culture, history and lifestyle of Tropical North Queensland, presenting unique perspectives from our creative community.
The City Library will be on every night of the Cairns Festival from 7pm-11pm and is completely free. Starts 23rd August until 01 September.
Esplanade Roving the Esplanade on August 25th will be “spirit animal” reader Crystal Small, look out for her roving Gypsy hut ridden by the bearded lady. Roll up and be entertained by Madam Mini while you wait to see Physic Extra Small for your spirit animal card reading and illustration, created right before your eyes. This fun event is repeated at Carnival on Collins and is free to take part. All the details are available on Cairns Festival website along with many more events to enjoy.
Cairns Art Gallery Do not miss the incredible works coming to Cairns Art Gallery by Patricia Piccinini. ‘Life Clings Closest’, Piccinini’s work is drawn from the real world but they are often not anything that we recognise. Their strangeness challenges our acceptance of the different. They are hybrids drawn from the animal world and beyond, but somehow, we can see ourselves in them.
This exhibition brings together works from the last twenty years of Piccinini’s practice, as well as a new group of works inspired by the unique environment of Far North Queensland. These works celebrate the wondrous ecology of the area, but also wonders at how we can cope with the overwhelming challenges facing it. What interests Piccinini is creating stories that reflect what it’s like to be alive today. She is drawn to the complexity that arises when the rational, the emotional and the ethical collide.
Have a wonderful winter x
