hy God?My brother was a meek, humble and loving man who was loved by many people. People of all nationalities gathered at his funeral. I remember asking that question when I was diagnosed with Multiple Scelerosis. Why would God allow me to have a terminal illness and my little brother die? There are so many horrible people in the world today that continue to live doing mean and cruel things to others, but yet they still live. When my brother was beaten to death by police, and I was diagnosed, I remember asking, ‘Why God?’ I wish God would have taken me instead of my little brother. He was wonderful, but I remember hearing my pastor say, “Why not you? How can you be a testimony to others if you have no faith walk?”

WENDY SHEPPARD

This issue, Oasis Montagé Magazine has been put through a test of faith in the Lord. Men have tried to profess God and use the magazine to rob, steal and destroy this publication. It’s disturbing when they steal gifts from children. I have had to pray day and night, night and day for strength in the Lord to let me see the deceit in man and to not allow them to use the gifts God has given. I have learned that just because they say they are children of God, that they will not be blessed in their wrong doings. It has been tough on the nation as we have had to mourn the deaths of some of our great African-American celebrity legends. 2012 has just begun and we have lost Soul Train host, Don Cornelius, and the beautiful balladeer, Whitney Houston. This issue is dedicated to Whitney and her family. “Whitney, we will always love you.” Some new additions to this issue of the magazine features Up & Coming artist, and new authors. As a media outlet, we intend to bring you new artist that are breaking into the industry with their music, comedy and talents. We also decided to take a look at books of writers that tell a unique story. One of the books featured is my own, “When Enough is Enough”. My book is a bio of overcoming a violent marriage with a minister and how God restored me by putting a knight in shining armor in my life that rescued me. Can you believe that Oasis Montagé Magazine was received as a national publication to walk the Red Carpet at the 27th Annual Stellar Awards in Nashville, Tennessee. It was a joyous and honorable

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Publisher,

I found your magazine on the web. I want to subscribe to this magazine and I was excited to know a black woman owns it. I have always wanted to publish a magazine and I was inspired by Oasis Montagé. I love the name, and read the magazine and found the meaning to be intriguing. “The Magazine that takes you on a journey into fashion, arts, entertainment, gospel, military news, relationships, and life after abuse.” I read the issue with Fred Hammond. I love Fred and the song, “Blessed.” That song truly inspires me. I was able to read the new to be in a picture with him. He is so wonderful and when I read the article on him I thought, “Wow, Christopher is spiritual?” That is so cool because now days celebrities say they love the lord, but a lot of them live a life of the world. There is so much homosexuality going around with artist. They don’t realize that they are leaders and Icons. Our children look up to them and yet they are truly not living a Christian life. It was wonderful to know that Christopher is a God fearing man. I enjoyed the article on OPP, other people’s property. It was very interesting and an article that was needed for people like me. I had never heard of swingers, and to know they have their own clubs to get their groove on was amazing. That’s why I love this magazine, they have interesting and educational information that is safe to read and I honestly love it! Jean Benson, Sacramento, CA

This is your favorite Florida’s C.O.O. of Oasis Montagé’ Magazine. I am really looking forward to some new and exciting things happening for us this year. Look forward to the magazine taking you on a journey from award winning shows to sporting events, concerts, plays and more. We are going to have so much fun and we hope you enjoy reading about it. Last issue I let you know a little about my personal life and I am glad that I did. It’s not good to keep things bottled up inside, sometimes it’s good to release it but not tell it all (lol). Anyway I hope you enjoyed the article that went along with my page. It made a funny reading but unfortunately things like that does happen. If you are married and the relationship is solid, continue to love the one you are with, do things together, have fun with each other and never take your spouse for granted. At the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN, I had a remarkable experience at the Stellar Awards. I took pictures of nominees and winners and the one person who grabbed my attention with a big hug was Dr. Bobby Jones. I felt like a stellar star being on the red carpet with Mr. Jones. WHATEVER

HAPPENED

TO TALENT?

By Brandi Walker & Demetrius Walker

What ever happened to talent? It seems as though they are giving away free record deals with the purchase of Charmin toilet paper. Where’s the ethics? The responsibility, The class... the TALENT? When I turn on the radio or video channels I see and hear a cornucopia of garbage. It doesn’t make sense to me because there are so many good examples to follow. There was a time when a person had to have talent. If one wanted to be a singer, step one was: You have to know how to sing. Now, step one is: What does he/she look like? Step two is: How much does he/she weigh? Step three: Is he/she willing to do to make a total and utter fool of himself/herself? Technology is a gift and a curse. A gift because it allows us to communicate more broadly, to store great amounts of information into small areas and so many other things. But when it comes to the music industry, its a curse; because it allows computers to replace what humans should be doing. For example: When I buy an mp3 or a CD, I expect to hear a REAL human being singing or rapping; or I expect to hear a REAL band playing. That doesn’t happen anymore unless I buy old skool music (which is pretty much what I do) . Is this what we have come to? There are plenty of people who possess raw talent as singers, musicians, and rappers; but many times they don’t make it due to appearance. A perfect example of this is Kelly Price. I’m not saying that she didn’t make

ZENOBIA SMITH Gospel artist, Zenobia Smith of Kansas City, Missouri, recently released her long awaited cd in March 2011 entitled “An Invitation to Sing”, produced by nephew, Jonathan Strother. This cd will bless your heart and lift spirit. She brings a new level of worship designed to encourage you in the Lord. All songs are written by Zenobia, with the exception of “How Can It Be”, written by Dr. Jacquie Brown Hadnot. Zenobia traveled to Germany in September of 2011, promoting the cd, and ministering at the church of Bishop John Alan Neal, the Agape Christian Faith Center. it, but I will say that she did not become what she should have become. Kelly Price was a large woman with a large voice when she entered the music industry. And though I can’t prove it, I believe that we would have heard more from her if she was smaller in size. She lost a lot of weight and tried it again; still, sales were slow. I believe that her new problem was, right size, wrong look. When it comes to black women in entertainment, the status quo is: Light skin, perfect body, long hair. That ideal is not realistic; so Black women get weaves, breast augmentations, and dangerous diets. Women of all ethnicities are having this problem. We do these things not only to be in the entertainment industry, but to walk the street. The media set the standard for what is acceptable in society, So after we have mutilated and damn near killed ourselves, we’re all ready for our big premier as an entertainer, right? The answer should be WRONG, but its not. Some chump with dollar signs for eyeballs says, “yes I can make you a star”. Can’t sing; can’t act? Don’t worry, you can fake it til’ you make it. Then the faking it goes on until the next pretty face and well manufactured body comes along. In the meantime, I’m supposed to listen and watch this. Did I forget to mention that if I have some kind of mental melt down and like their song I’m supposed to buy it? And if I have some kind of serious head injury and want to see their movie, I have to pay for a ticket to see it? Somehow I don’t think that Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight or Natalie Cole had to reinvent themselves to sell records. But I do think that they had to know how to sing. If they were just starting out right now all they could sell musically is gospel. It’s a shame!!! Both male and female performers get an “F” in the subject of customer responsibility. I hate to hear about performers getting caught up in an act of stupidity and then saying, “I’m not a role model.” The second you stood in public before a crowd you became a role model. Entertainers need to take responsibility for the good and the bad that they do!!! And to the rappers: You cannot make one

when the rest of the album is about drugs and violence. I’m not saying that rappers should stop making street music, but don’t straddle the fence. Rap artist know who their main audience is- the kids! That means they have to be role models!!! Speaking of rap music; there was a time when, in order to be a rapper, there was one main rule: You had to know how to rap. Putting words together rhythmically does not make one a rapper. Any fool with a pen and a pad can do that. What ever happened to lyrical content? Rappers like Rakim, KRS-1, Mos Def, Common, and Kool G Rapp had something to say. Now its all beats and booties, No talent. What ever happened to bands? Oh, I know; sampling happened to bands. Have we run out of ideas? Thousands of musicians are out of work because there is no need for them. Computers and sampling have replaced them; can’t that be compared to out-sourcing? Bottom line; if you’re talented, it really shouldn’t matter what you look like: Short, tall, heavy, or thin. I buy music based on what I hear. I may be the only one who is this way, but I can’t hear what a person looks like!!! This is killing music; and I don’t blame the sellers, I blame the consumers. Why do we keep paying to insult our daughters, nieces, mothers, aunts and friends; or to hurt our sons, nephews, fathers, and uncles? Every time we patronize these acts we are perpetuating destructive behavior. If you love music, then demand music, not a substitute. If you go to a restaurant and order a steak; you wouldn’t let the waitress bring you chicken, would you? No, you would demand a steak!!! Let’s start demanding quality, not just quantity in music that WE are expected to purchase!!! Just my opinion.... Talk to you soon! WYLDFLOW3R ethno musicologist

blindness. I found my husband taking care of me too early in life and I said to myself, “I am too young to die and I do not want to live leaving my family behind.” I decided to stop being angry after gaining 20 pounds. I decided to research this illness after being hospitalized. The hospital treated me with 10,000 mg of steroids for 7 days. Sclerosis. I just happened to decide to stop feeling sorry for myself. I remember asking God, “Why me? Have I not been through enough?” When He answered, I smiled gratefully. I then decided to research this disease, this illness, Multiple sclerosis (or MS). This is what I found out on the internet site: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/about-multiple-sclerosis/what-we-know-about-ms/ what-is-ms/index.aspx Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of unpredictable and vary from one person to another. This disease course is characterized by slowly worsening neurologic function from the beginning—with no distinct relapses or remissions. The rate of progression may vary over time, with occasional plateaus and temporary minor improvements. Approximately 10% of people are diagnosed with primary-progressive MS. Following an initial period of relapsing-remitting MS, many people develop a secondary-progressive disease course in which the disease worsens more steadily, with or without occasional disease-modifying medications became available, approximately 50% of people with relapsing-remitting MS developed this form of the disease within 10 years. In this relatively rare course of MS (5%), people experience steadily worsening disease from the beginning, but with clear attacks of worsening neurologic function along the way. They may or may not experience some recovery following these relapses, but the disease continues to progress without remissions. Since no two people have exactly the same experience of MS, the And, it may not always be clear to the physician—at least right away—which course a person is experiencing. I can honestly say that I have a new me. I do not take life for granted or my relationship with God. I seek to, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see my good works and glorify Him in heaven. Matt 5:16.” I treat people the way I want to be treated, not how they treat me. ven though that song was written in 2008, the lyrics identifies with the inner peace and beauty of the artist, Whitney Houston. For those that feel cheated and didn’t get to give Houston a farewell or even get to tell Houston, “I love you,” Whitney said it all in the song, “I will always love you.” What better way to make you feel that it’s okay to let her go. Whitney Houston at age 48, died Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Beverly Hills California Hilton Hotel. She was in Los Angeles for the 54th Grammy’s Clive Davis pre-show. Houston was scheduled to perform with singers Brandy and Monica and rehearsed with them early that week. Celebrities were in despair and in shock over Houston’s death. Clive considered canceling the show, but in honor of Houston, kept the show date. The Grammy’s acknowledged Houston and honored her with celebrity prayers, endearing comments, and an emotional tribute by Jennifer Hudson. Hudson sang Houston’s song, “I will always love you.” Hudson says, “It was the greatest honor of my life to be able to be the one

to pay tribute to Whitney’s memory.” Hudson gave an emotional performance of the song. At the end of her performance, a video Montagé was played of Houston. Hudson told Us Weekly, “It was from my heart, I haven’t stopped crying since she passed. Her family is in my prayers.” Although Hudson struggled to get through the song, the tribute was one of the most talked about moments of the night. The tribute can be viewed on website: http://www.nypost. com/p/pagesix/jennifer_hudson_says_whitney_houston_ lE7PsYsF7HYw8KNyiVvTMP #ixzz1mQMZdcwZ. Houston, who admitted on talk shows of having a drug addiction, has had an enormous amount of rumors linking her death to drugs. In her defense, Houston’s close friend, Chaka Khan was interviewed by CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight. Chaka criticized Houston’s music mogul, Clive Davis for not canceling the Pre-Grammys gala. Chaka says, “I thought that was complete insanity,” Khan said. “And knowing Whitney I don’t think that she would’ve said, ‘The show must go on,’ she’s the kind of woman who would’ve said, ‘stop everything! I’m not going to

be there.’ I don’t know what could motivate a person to have a party in the building where the person whose life he had influenced so enormously [had died]. And whose life has been affected by hers... I don’t understand how that party went on.” Chaka a 10-time Grammy Award winner, who flew in and planned on attending Davis’ annual party, stated that she was “paralyzed” after being informed of Houston’s death when arriving in Los Angeles. Chaka stated Houston did not belong in LA for a full week prior to Houston’s performance. Chaka says, “I, too, was an addict, [and] I know if I was on the set of a movie, even now and [I’ve been] recovered for seven years, and I found out that I was coming to a city like L.A, we would’ve made specific plans that I come in [the] night before or day of performance.” Chaka added, “This is especially if you have not gone in and got proper treatment and gotten your situation handled. That was the first big mistake, for her (Houston) to come in for an entire week before her performance at the part. I would have never done that. I stand on whoever flew her out to perform at that party should’ve

provided someone to be there to somehow keep the riff raff from out of the situation and to keep some of the dangerous people away.” Houston leaves behind her mother, Cissy Houston, Cousin Dionne Warwick, and the joy of her heart, her teenage daughter, Bobbi Kristina; of ex-husband and singer Bobby Brown. Bobbi took the death of her mother extremely hard and was hospitalized after the announcement of her mother’s death. She and her mother were very close. As a child, the two of them performed a live concert which can be viewed at: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6bl6t_ whitney-ft-bobbi-kristina-my-love-i_music. That concert was an everlasting moment of love. Whitney had several interviews, but one most recent was in reference to the movie, Sparkle, a 1976 movie remake that features Houston. It will debut in August, 2012. Houston plays the role of the mother, Sparks. Carmen JoJo who plays the daughter of Sparks said when asked, “what is it was like to act with Houston?” replied, “Whitney Houston is a wonderful person, I love her. She is truly a joy and I loved working with her. Although she is my mother in the movie, in real life she was very endearing. We bonded and she gave great advice. She is such a great actress; and very nice. You are going to love the movie Sparkle.” When Houston was interviewed on Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson while on the set of the film Sparkle, she reflected on the support system that carried her through her rough times during her three-decade career and says, “There will be the ups, there will be the downs, there will be the all-arounds, but your belief, your faith and your determination [and] the encouragers – the people who encourage you to do and be the best you can – it is a blessing.” She went on to tell Shaun that her family has been a source of overwhelming unconditional support, especially her 18year old daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Whitney went on to say, “I have a mother that’s very strong and family that surround me and constantly tell me they love me. My daughter is my greatest inspiration. My greatest, my greatest. She supports me, she loves me, and she gives me good mommy hugs.” In the interview Shaun told Whitney that thousands of people are rooting for her and he asked her if she could feel that. Whitney responded, “Oh yeah!” Whitney answered, emphatically. “I’ve got some good saints out there – that’s right – that pray for me constantly. You’ve gotta have that! You do. For those who don’t believe – you do. I’m older, I’m matured… I’m looking forward to the years to come. Good years.”A lot of rumors have surfaced regarding Whitney’s cause of death, but the only thing that is most confirmed is that Whitney did not commit suicide and there was no foul play involved. It is obvious in her interview with Shaun that she intended to do a lot more film work. In 1995, Houston starred alongside with actresses Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon film, “Waiting to Exhale.” This was a motion picture about four AfricanAmerican women struggling with relationships. Houston played the lead character Savannah Jackson, a TV producer in love with a married man. The soundtrack of the movie, Waiting to Exhale, was

produced by Houston and Babyface. Babyface wanted Houston to record the entire album but instead, Houston wanted to have women with vocal distinction. She then pulled in several African-American female artists for the soundtrack. The album featured artists along with Houston, such as Mary J Blige, Aretha Franklin, Toni Braxton, Patti Labelle, and Brandy. Houston’s “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” peaked at No. 1. The song, “Count On Me”, a duet with CeCe Winans, hit the US Top 10; and the 3rd song on the soundtrack, “Why Does It Hurt So Bad”, made the Top 30. The entire album debuted at No. 1, and was certified 7× Platinum in the United States selling seven million copies. The album ranked the 100 Best Movie Soundtracks. Houston’s work is phenomenal. The soundtrack’s lead single was, “I Will Always Love You.” It ranked number 1 on the Adult Contemporary charts for five weeks. Houston won three Grammys for the album in 1994, including two of the Academy’s highest honors, “Album of the Year” and “Record of the Year.” Houston also won a record 8 American Music Awards which included “The Award of Merit,” 11 Billboard Music Awards, 3 Soul Train Music Awards and in 1993–94, “The Sammy Davis, Jr. Award” as Entertainer of the Year, 5 NAACP Image Awards including “Entertainer of the Year,” a record 5 World Music Awards, and a “BRIT Award.” In 1996, Houston starred in movie, The Preacher’s Wife, with Denzel Washington. She plays a gospel-singing wife of a pastor (Courtney B. Vance). Houston earned $10 million for the role, making her one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood at the time and the highest earning African American actress in Hollywood. Houston was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and won for “Outstanding Actress In A Motion Picture.” The Preacher’s Wife soundtrack included six gospel songs and sold six million copies worldwide. The hit singles were: “I Believe in You and Me” and “Step by Step,” which became the largest selling gospel album. Houston’s accomplishments are of a mighty wonderful woman. She showed so much love for a multitude of people. Her appearance was of elegance and flawless. She was never viewed as being seductive, sexy or promiscuous. She was a woman of grace that exemplified kindness and honor. Houston was a woman that always loved you.

IN LOVING MEMORY Oasis Montagé’ Magazine staff dedicates this spring issue to Whitney Houston and her family and we say, “You can no longer be hurt by the words of others. We will always love you Whitney, and may you rest in peace.” DONATIONS Houston’s family asked Tuesday that any donations in her memory be sent to the arts-focused public school that she attended as a child and that was named after her in the late 1990s. In lieu of flowers, they said mourners should donate to the Whitney Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts in East Orange, a school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

When you hear Tea Party these days, the term might be plagued with political jargon and innuendo’s, but this Tea Party, or Tea, is a stress- free, relaxing, unwinding tea party with delicious foods to boot. Tea drinking dates back to the 17th Century in China where the custom was very expensive due to high taxes on the brew. The British adopted the custom by the 18th century while it was considered a Royal ritual usually to entertain business clients. Eventually the taxes were reduced on tea and made accessible to everyone. Tea is now a part of all cultures around the globe. With many varieties of teas, tea stores and shops are now a part of the backdrop in many communities, making it a hot commodity, no pun intended. Afternoon Teas were also popular back in the day. n the 1970’s and 80’s, my sister, Honey was the best singer, dancer, and performer. She had all the men trying to holla at her. They use to shower her with gifts, roses, and poses after each show. When growing up, I use to wish I could

tour as a back up singer with Earth, Wind, and Fire, I wanted gorgeous inside out and very protective of me. She was built like a brick house. I use to love to hear her sing around the house, she sounded better Chaka Khan. When she walked in church late

hand her the microphone. My sister use to shout the house down. She use to rehearse with the band in the garage and invite me to sing the 1st soprano parts of Natalie Coles song, “Our Love.” I knew mama would never let me go on the road with her, so I just stayed in my sister’s shadow. Now after 32 years, my sister Anita Clarice President-Wright is making a come back. She had some ups and downs, but she is putting it all behind her to come out with a fresh new CD in 2013 called, “Shadow of Love.”
