mirage: a machine of perception

arch studio I critic: sophie masse duration: 4 weeks group: colby bell, tyler lamonda, la

In the Salt Flats your perception is easily miscued. The object of the machine of perception is to abstractly create a point to which you can reference.

Mirages are seen very easily on the Salt Flats, creating the deception of water that you will be able to reach. This mirage sculpture is reachable and tangible. It distorts the mind’s perception of the untouchable thing.

The mirage creates a sense of arrival in a hostile environment. What once seems so far away is at your fingertips before you know it. Defining this space helps us understand the machine of perception.

Materials were constructed of recycled pallets, recycled aluminum and zinc sheets.

exposure: satellite school of architecture

arch studio IV critic: joerg ruegemer duration: 12 weeks

University of Utah College of Architecture and Planning has outgrown their facilities many years ago. To further integrate students with the community and a more urban environment, a new satellite school of architecture will be designed in downtown Salt Lake City.

Just across the street from the Salt Palace will raise up a beacon to understand architecture. Everything in the building will be exposed so students can see how a building actually gets put together and the workings that go into construction. It will also demonstrate the design help of engineers to design such a large cantilever. This building will not only will this expose students to building construction, the building will expose the life of an architecture student to the city.

spiraling spiraling ice: VE an design EVE competition celebration

fall 2009 duration: 2 weeks (design) group: colby bell, liz yonashiro, dan

The Downtown Alliance holds a celebration that has been going on for years in the downtown district of Salt Lake City. For the past few years they have held a competition for an installation piece to go on display for the 3 day event. Spiraling Ice was one of three installments chosen to go on display. The theme for the event was “light and motion through time”. The concept was “the journey”. The fluid movement of people weaving between spiraling ice forms and exposed doorways reveals the beauty hidden within obstacles. The forms were created from metal conduit wrapped with 24 inch poultry netting. They were then wrapped with over 5000 lights, and then enveloped by bubble wrap. The bases were 100 pound concrete boxes. Most of the material used was recycled and reused from waste.

salt lake city film center

arch studio III critic: brenda scheer duration: 4 weeks

The site for the new film center serves as a bridge between old industrial and newly developed. The concept is based on the Rashomon effect. Many films often depict various perspectives to uncover the truth. From each floor at different areas users are able to see through diaphanous shafts enabling unique points of view of individual areas. None are large enough that they can see the whole picture, but get a glimpse or a piece. From these pieces you can view other users, or see how the building is held up. The second floor is large and heavy, and through these slots you can glimpse some of the technology enabling its erection. Program: Approximately 26,000 square feet comprising 6 theaters ranging from 100 to 300 seats, cafĂŠ, gallery, lending library, and office space.

threshold: bryce canyon observatory

grad studio I critic: verl adams partner: kelly swan duration: 12 weeks

Bryce Canyon is home to many high power telescopes and avid star gazers. Proclaimed as the darkest skies in all of Utah, many flock to see what can’t be found amidst light polluted skies. This facility will provide a visitors observatory that will be able to remote into the new University telescope built Nestled in the trees the columns will mimic the irregular angles of the tree trunks. The natural lighting will take after this same pattern producing beautiful reflected light from both exterior and interior panels. This new facility will be able to better host the current star parties with its large pier tracing through the tallest peaks of the tree line. At this point you will not have any issues with anything getting in the way.

RSL plaza: sandy state alternate corridor

arch grad studio III critic: brenda scheer michael larice duration: 3 weeks

Sandy State Alternate Corridor is a redevelopment of State Street just south of 9000 South in Sandy, UT. The 3 anchors of this new ribbon development require new construction and redesign.

Rio Tinto Stadium is the northernmost anchor. Real Salt Lake has been a great addition to the Utah sports environment. Their new stadium’s surroundings are lacking what is deserved for the great popularity and loyal fan base of the franchise.

This building was to provide some enclosure and sense of place as you approach rio tinto stadium. Its focus was also to guide and drive people to the stadium. Its form is derived from numerous attributes to the game housed next door.

river district gardens: panaderia flores

arch grad studio II critic: mayra locher duration: 8 weeks

Salt Lake City has plans to redevelop and revitalize the west side of its city. A major node is on 900 West and 900 South. This newly developed area is the River District Gardens.

What has long been a staple on this corner is the neighborhood bakery. This entire intersection and integration with the Jordan River and the new 9 Line deserves better attention and development.

The flow of constant foot traffic derived from the new development has eroded away and worn off the edges of the Panaderia Flores. The new building will stand the tests of time and be a vital stop for baked goods and a great dining experience.

analog and digital

Discipline in art is a fundamental struggle to understand oneself, as much as to understand what one is drawing. -unknown Works collected from architectural communication, design graphics, archictecture history, various sketches, and personal work.

ki-net-ic: lamp study

This lamp was created without an idea for the way it should be at rest. Its organic feel allows and provokes one to move and adjust the aesthetic to their own likeness. Something this touchable should not be static.
