Axel Stein Fine Arts
It is with an immense pleasure that I am sending my traditional clients and friends the first e-catalogue of works by important Latin American artists. I started Axel Stein Fine Arts after four decades of dedicated work in the field at Museo de Bellas Artes, Sala de Exposiciones / Fundación Eugenio Mendoza in Venezuela before joining a major auction house art back in the 1990’s. My very last working experience as Head of the Latin American Art Department on York avenue gave me the unique opportunity to be one of the principal developers of that market: during these last five years alone, my team and I have appraised, researched and found new homes for about two thousand works of art from the region worth over $ 220 M. The creation of ASFA is my way to continue working in the field as I am able to offer you the same level of quality works with a level of utmost professionalism. I am thrilled to join a select group of colleagues who have worked and continue working tirelessly to grow the interest and the market of Latin American art. The present catalogue gathers a group of works of exceptional quality. In the modern section, the arresting Tamayo, Desnudo en Rojo from 1977 from a Brazilian private collection leads to an exceptional group of Joaquín Torres-García. Estructura en blanco y negro con ritmos curvos y oblicuos from 1938 was recently exhibited on the MoMA walls during the artist´ retrospective exhibition of 2016. Five beautiful paintings by Torres from one of the most prestigious collections in Uruguay and two stone monumental works by [ brilliant Torres’ alumnus] Gonzalo Fonseca are the core of the catalogue. The powerful Untitled Matta from 1957 and the rare color work on paper by Lam, dated Marseille 1940 come from the collection of Clara Diament Sujo, one of the most passionate promoters of Latin American Art in Venezuela and later in the past century, in the United States. The powerful surface animation and warm patina of Sergio Camargo’s Relief # 349 from 1971, the elegant curves of Soto’s Escritura and the spectacular light installation Death Row, Homage to Ellsworth Kelly´Spectrum 5, 1969 by Chilean Iván Navarro (shown here when installed at the Chilean Pavilion at the Venice Biennial in 2009) are the highlights of the contemporary section. A selection of the works in this catalogue is currently on view at HUTCHINSON MODERN, an art space created by my former colleague and dear friend Isabella Hutchinson on the Upper East Side. At this moment, Isabella is exhibiting works by Lam, Bravo, Lisa, Aizenberg, Soriano and Guttero among others. We are available for appointments through March 2019. Finaly, I am currently working with SP ARTE, the principal art fair in South America on an exploratory VIP trip during their annual fair in April. We will have access to some of the most important Sao Paulo private collections… Included in the program is a visit to the fabulous and unique site of Inhotim Institute of Contemporary Art and Botanical Garden http://www.inhotim.org.br/ located in the forests near Belo Horizonte and, while we are there, end the week-long trip in … Rio! Wishing you very happy holidays and a wonderful 2019.
