Nels Johnson Clockmaker

1838 - 1915 This is a copy of Nels Johnson’s account of his life written in his 76th year. In addition to clockmaking, which became the hallmark of Nels Johnsons career, he owned and operated a machine shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In Manistee he started another machine shop which was lost in the fire of 1871. He built another machine shop, boiler works and foundry located on the present Rengo property between Water and First Streets. Two of the three original buildings remain. Mr. Johnson found it necessary to study astronomy at the University of Michigan for his clockmaking business. As an adjunct to his Century Tower Clock manufacturing, he built a telescope in the early 1900’s which he later donated to Manistee High School. Century Tower Clocks can be found throughout Michigan and the United States and in other countries - India, China and England. Nels Johnson was a member of the American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. About 1914 an article about his accomplishments was published in the American Magazine.
