CHAPTER 1 KILLING PEOPLE wasn’t a choice for me anymore than breathing, eating or drinking were options. Realistically, I have no other course of action available to me because of my genetic makeup. I’ve been tested. They say I’ve got the warrior gene. That’s me, alright. The warrior. Warrior or not, I’ve learned to mask aberrant behaviors amid only exhibit standard, acceptable practices. In my opinion, nature made me the way I am and nature can damn well provide for my needs. On the flip side, what others often referred to as a personality disorder has actually contributed to my business success over the years. A fair trade-off as far as I’m concerned. Know what I find fascinating? Football. Not pro football or semi-pro. High school football. Nothing compares to Friday night football, especially in a small Texas town. A bunch of testosterone-filled teenagers, dressed out in form-enhancing pads, scoring points on a weaker opponent? Perhaps the beauty lies in the loss of brain cells after a punishing tackle snaps a player’s kull with such force the brain bounces around from side-to-side, front to back, scrambling it like a fluffy omelet. I’ve heard it said “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Sure, if the dumb bastard has any vision left after a brutal impact. Trust me, I know a thing or two about brutality and blurred vision. In her heyday, mv mother could land a right hook worthy of title boxing. I have the damage to prove it. Too bad that freak accident in the garage took Mom out of commission. She could’ve been a contender. When I was younger, the injuries were an embarrassment to me. A mark of shame for not being the kind of son mv mother wanted. As a kid, I felt like a failure. As a grown man, I wear the scars as a badge of honor for having survived the war. The war of mv childhood. Guess vou can say I’m a veteran. One could logically assume that football crowds erupt into cheers at the slightest provocation simply because the cool autumn nights bring a welcome relief from the stifling summer heat.
